Game Thread: Opening Night!
Sacramento Kings at Minnesota Timberwolves, Oct 29, 2008 7:00 PM CDT
Different uni's, different court, different...team? Tonight we'll continue the great Wolves rebuilding experiment.
Game Notes:
7:00 pm, Target Center
vs Sacramento Kings
TV: KSTC-45
Radio: KFAN-AM 1130
Preseason Records:
Minnesota - 6-2, Sacramento - 1-7
Minnesota plays a Sacramento team in search of an identity, especially after losing Ron Artest during the off-season. Kevin Martin was seventh in league scoring last year with a 23.7 PPG average, and had a 20.7 average this preseason. He's surrounded by folks such as center Brad Miller, T-Wolf-for-an-hour Beno Udrih at the point, Artest replacement John Salmons, and Mikki Moore at power forward. Young bigs Spencer Hawes and Jason Thompson are initially coming off the bench for the Kings, along with old familar combo guard Bobby Jackson.
Keys for the game: Coming out of the gate with some intensity at both ends of the court, and not giving Martin easy looks at the basket. Offensively, getting people other than Jefferson in the scoring column early.
Projected Starting Lineups
Minnesota: Randy Foye / Mike Miller / Corey Brewer / Ryan Gomes / Al Jefferson
Sacramento: Beno Udrih/ Kevin Martin/ John Salmons/ Mikki Moore/ Spencer Hawes
[Thanks to Sterno for the correction...Miller is suspended for five games - Peter]

No Garcia for Sacto?
Seriously, this one should be easy. And we won’t say that very often.

Isn't Miller suspended?
Thought he failed a drug test and is missing the 1st five games. Hawes is a big drop off at this point, and that should be a plus for us.
Should be fun to see Brewer chase around Martin. At least Martin is one of the few guys who can’t push him around.

Yep, you're right....
I had forgotten about that….looks like Spencer Hawes is starting for them tonight. This is why I don’t do these very often, or at least so early in the morning!

I think Garcia is coming off the bench for them...
as far as I can see from the Kings site. I could be wrong about that. He’s healthy though…

Then again...
according to the Sac Bee, he’s nursing a calf injury…he’s out tonight/, but not for long.

No Miller & Garcia = break for the wolves
Sure, we’re missing Collins and Telfair, but I don’t think they are quite as critical. I’d argue that Garcia and Miller were definitely part of the Kings’ best five they can put on the floor. Hopefully Telfair and Collins aren’t part of our best 5.

wolves look great so far
wouldn’t you say? Some soft D but aside from that, fun to watch.

Very nice...
…they look really good. They have a nice collection of hustle guys. Brewer and Love can really get at it out there and I think they both have the potential to be top-of-the-line role players. Imagine adding Rubio + a 2/3 that can really score. Pipe dream, I know…but it’s the best case scenario.

I like McCants taking it strong too...
…only complaint: he has got to be the worst passer-off-penetration in history! Oh well, as long as he can get to the line it won’t be the end of the world.
How about Love looking like he’s going to cough up a lung! Though as long as he plays that well, no complaints here.

a few mistakes but it’s making me rethink my statement about that position being unlearnable. smart player.

ouch
the end of the quarter hurts
Yeah looks like they’ll be bringing Love along slowly. Tough to tell if he’s real good of if Sacramento’s just that bad. Probably both I guess…still, I bet he’s starting by about game 50, or at least getting most of the minutes at that position.

Just got back from the game
Initial thoughts:
1) When Jefferson and Love are on the court together, the Wolves murder on the glass.
2) Brewer and Foye on the court together is a ridiculously disruptive backcourt. Too bad they can’t defend shots.
3) The free throw shooting was cover your eyes bad.
