Stephen Curry held scoreless by a triangle and 2 defense...still averaging 29.2 ppg
From the Strib:
The nation's leading scorer was held without a point as Loyola, Md. employed a triangle-and-2 defense against Curry with both defenders on him. Despite Curry going scoreless, the game was never in doubt as 24th-ranked Davidson routed Loyola 78-48 on Tuesday night.
...
In Davidson, N.C., it didn't take long for Curry to figure out the strategy. He spent some possessions just standing in the corner with two defenders around him while his teammates had a constant 4-on-3 advantage.

Lol @ the standing in the corner. In the ongoing conspiracy against me watching basketball my DVD recorder broke, so I can’t record the NCAA games I’d like to watch. Luckily there’s a new deal on the digital tv thingy so we’ll have a digital record (with hard disk in it) for 7 euro less a month … guess it’s christmas soon.
As soon as that kicks in I’ll check on the Davidson star.
One thing though: since he’s mostly a jump shooter, does he fit in the “we need more freethrows” thing? Or is he that good at shooting that we don’t need freethrows from him? Isn’t it scary to draft another combo? What makes him that much better than Foye (and Mccants)?
Well...
…if you can make up for the loss of free throws with a mid and long range game, a’la what Flip used to do, you’re fine. However, free throws are very, very, very nice to have in the long run…i.e. in the playoffs with a guy like Big Al. That being said, as a big proponent of up tempo ball, you can get by without them if you’re efficient enough. Curry is efficient enough. Curry + Foye + Miller is…well, if Foye can get his FG% back up to what it should be around (44/40), that’s a fairly nice perimeter trio.

What a stupid strategy...
Playing 3 on 4 is a complete joke—Loyola must have been more interested in making news than playing decent basketball.
Yep...
…poor form on the coach’s part. He said as much in the article.

Kevin Martin gets free throws...
like it’s going out of style and he is about as pure a jump shooter as there is. Savvy jump shooters can get theirs at the line.
I didn’t catch that standing in the corner nugget when I first read the star trib story. That is hilarious.
I think what makes him better than McCants is having a good attitude. It isn’t Rashads skills that keep him from being good.
You know your post made me realize
that as much as I’ve seen references to that kind of defence, I’ve never actually seen it. I’ve seen box and 1 a million times but that’s as close as I’ve come. I guess it wouldn’t work unless you were playing a team where everybody but one guy was completely terrible – like in 8th grade or something. Pretty hilarious though.
In a girls league I used to coach in...
…there was this one team with a girl that absolutely dominated. She was 4 inches taller than anyone else and could dribble pretty well for a person her age. I never trotted out a triangle/2 but some of the other coaches in the league would literally put 3 girls on her and float one person close while letting the other girls on the team have whatever they want. We ran a simple 2-3 and it usually turned into an amoeba where all 5 girls would collapse on her when she got the ball. She still scored a ton and we lost.

lol
the last line of that comment is great.
Actually come to think of it I have seen triangle and 2 – but with the 2 players guarding 2 different guys. I guess that makes a little bit more sense.
Box and 1 would seem to be perfect for defending Curry, the only problem is all their guys can shoot, they can just put all their Québécois guys (do they have a direct recruiting line to Montreal or something?) at the arc and tell them to wait for shots.
