I want you to look all the way over to the far right hand side.  Now, I'm not calling Hollinger's PER the end-all of basketball stats, but it's pretty good.  The average NBA PER is 15.  More accurately, it's adjusted each year so that the average is 15.  Right now the Wolves have three above average players and they all play the same position.

I can't stress to you just how bad these last 10 games were for the Wolves.  Absolutely nothing was going right.  From Brewer's injury to Collins' minutes to Miller's ankle to Witt's firing, these last 10 games have been absolutely brutal for the franchise and you'd really like to hope that they were a bunch of anomalies rather than a series of trends.

In the series of stats we are following at the beginning of the post the Wolves have seen drop offs in 10 out of 15 categories during the last stretch of 10 games.  The only big improvement they've made is in OReb and eOReb and you can chalk these two up to the increased minutes and production of one Kevin Love.  Beyond that, they broke even with record and points against while slightly increasing their pace.  They saw significant 10-game decreases in OE, points for, point differential, and their eFG continued to fall.

Going back to the Ryan Gomes experiment at the 4, as you can see from his stats, he's getting blown out of the water, primarily at the defensive end.  He is averaging 6.5 more shots than his opponent but he is being outscored by nearly 2 pts/48.  His time at the 3 has increased due to Miller and Brewer being out so it will be interesting to see if this trend continues.

One of the most disappointing negative trends for this club is 3 point shooting.  They average the league's 26th worst number of attempts, they are the 25th worst percentage shooting 3 point team, and they are the 26th worst 3 point scoring club in the NBA with only 14.5 ppg off the long ball.   Their opponents are scoring nearly 20 ppg from beyond the arc while shooting nearly 7% better than the Wolves.

The Wolves are simply a terrible shooting club right now.  Their non-inside 2 point shooting is dreadful.  It's good for 28th in the league.  They have a nice inside percentage but they give up

wow

you make a compelling argument. bad news!

if only there were some statistical categories specifically calibrated to the zombie style of game our pups are developing. we’d rank high in Mt(2-3) — minutes spent terrified by 2-3 zone — for example. or perhaps there’s a measure capable of charting the symptomatic decline in MfP (Madsen fist pumps). the JP/R index would measure the degree of articulation between reality and Jim Pete’s description of it.

unfortunately right now we can mostly speak of these things anecdotally.

lol

I’m waiting for CoF/wtf!?, i.e. total minutes received by Cardinal (“Cardinal on floor”) divided by the number of times Wolves fans say “What the f*** is going on out there!?”

by plinytheelder on Dec 12, 2008 1:20 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I was scrolling through this accumulation of stats and was struck by the “best 5” lineups. I see Jaric, Walker and Snyder listed. I went back to the top thinking I’d time-warped, but the stats at the top listed all the familiar faces. What gives SnP? Trying to confuse this poor lost soul??

lol

I am constantly amazed by my own lack of knowledge.

Good catch...

…that would be the all-too-common stat known as a Bf, or brain fart. I’ll make the change. Thanks again.
