Chat with League Pass
I wasn't able to watch the game last night because of family events. Even if I were home I still wouldn't have been able to legally watch the game even though I paid nearly $100 to watch the NBA's on-line service. You see, League Pass Broadband had the festivities blocked out. I live a mile from Papa Glen's house and the game wasn't even available on the radio (MSU hockey gets the nod). I could have watched the game on an illegal European stream but that would be bad, right?
I encourage everyone to read this article about sports TV rights deals as well as click below the fold to read an interesting on-line chat I had with League Pass customer service. The Wolves may have finally gotten rid of Don Overbeck but the NBA still doesn't want paying customers to watch its product. Here's a little sample of my give-and-take:
10:24:31Merlin
Well I do have one little suggestion. Now it would be hit or miss but it may help.10:24:36natearch
yet the only way i can watch 1/2 the games is to break the law and get a stream like justin.tv10:25:04Merlin
What you might want to do is contact your isp and see if you can either get your ip address changed or see if you can get your ip address out of a different location.10:25:22natearch
where do i need it changed to?10:25:29Merlin
If you did that, it might and I do mean might make a little difference between how many of the timberwolves games you would be blacked out of.10:25:41natearch
so i'd be lying10:26:02natearch
which would be pretty much the same as me watching live streams from europe10:26:04natearch
for free10:26:39Merlin
You will have to understand that a lot of the blackouts are based upon people's ip addresses.10:26:51natearch
yes....but i still live in mankato10:27:08natearch
you're asking me to lie about where i live to see something i paid for10:27:24natearch
i literally live 1/2 a mile from glen taylor's house10:27:24Merlin
No that is not what I'm asking.10:27:42natearch
well, then what is it?10:27:58natearch
change my ip to a euro address and watch the games i paid for?10:28:01Merlin
See here's an example, a person can live one place, yet their ip address could be based out of a different area entirely.10:28:14natearch
so it has nothing to do with where i live10:28:44Merlin
I don't think that it would be possible I'm just merely trying to give you a suggestion that might help you. But as I said, if the NBA itself says its gonna be blacked out then its gonna be blacked out.10:29:09Merlin
Your Ip address is the main thing that blackouts are based on.10:29:15natearch
ok, say i do want to lie about my location for the sake of watching something i already paid for. i just have to call up my isp and say i want my ip changed10:29:36natearch
how far does my fake ip address have to be from the target center for this to work?10:30:49Merlin
No no, see first of all there can only be on ip address, and second it may not just be the ip address that is blacking you out.10:31:04natearch
maybe if i move to omaha...would that help?

Suggestion
Wow. Absurd. I’ve given up on trying to get my service activated. Luckily my wife is a movie junkie so we’ve made the decision to keep cable and cut elsewhere. LP TV was my b-day present from family members.
If getting your IP address changed doesn’t work, how about writing to Glen Taylor, explain where you live and that you are a pretty big macher among the 2,000 people who still follow the Wolves on a nightly basis. Then ask if you can watch the games at his house. The only catch is you may have to go easy on him with your posts. Worth the tradeoff?

Damn I’ll write him a letter like that if he’ll invite me to his house.

Good Post
Here’s my favorite line, which happened not too far into the conversation:
“i actually am not interested in why. I just want to watch the games.”
I like how you cut to the chase! Good luck getting this resolved.

Thanks...
…I had another chat with them to try and figure out which regulations were changed to not allow me to watch on line this year. That one was more frustrating but less entertaining.

League Pass Sucks...
…I had a different kind of trouble. I wanted to get League Pass through my Dish Network subscription, as had been advertised. Even though Dish was advertising the service, when I called a few days before the beginning of the season they informed me that they hadn’t yet reached a deal with the NBA to show the games on Dish. They told me I’d have to wait until opening day to see whether a deal had been reached (meanwhile, they continued to advertise League Pass on the website, at least partly to entice people to sign up for Dish, which was a bald lie). On opening day, I called again and they said that they still hadn’t worked anything out with the NBA, and that I should keep waiting. At that point, I got a little angry because of the way Dish was misleading its customers. I carried on about how they weren’t providing the service that I had signed up with Dish to watch in the first place, and that they were basically lying to their customers about their service. They actually let me out of my contract, and I immediately switched to Comcast, which actually carries League Pass. I don’t know whether my problem was Dish’s fault or the NBA’s, but the it’s clear that there are a bunch of kinks in the package that need to be worked out. I do like getting my Wolves games on the west coast, though – there’ s never a worry about blackouts.

You’ve probably read all about the game, but here’s my recap, in the form of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. I’ve added in my editorial comments, with which you can agree or disagree.
The Good:
*Jefferson was a machine. He was scoring at will and looking very good doing so.
*Kevin Ollie and Brian Cardinal and Jason Collins and Mark Madsen didn’t play. McHale played the right guys.
*Kevin Love is a top flight NBA rebounder.
*Randy Foye can score and make shots, although it should be noted that he was “4th Quarter Foye” in the worst sense last night, scoring quite a few of his points when the game was far out of reach.
The Bad:
*Our defensive intensity is shit. We had a lot of breakdowns where we didn’t double Duncan and when we did, we didn’t rotate over onto Finley, who is arguably the best perimeter shooter on their team. He got a bunch of open looks from the corner thanks to good ball rotation around the perimeter and slow defensive rotations.
*We missed a lot of free throws again. It was like it was contagious. Love needs to start making his throws.
*Mike Miller looks like a role player, just as he has been his entire career. I don’t know why people keep denying this. Just because he won rookie of the year in a weak class doesn’t mean that he’s a star. I know he’s been injured, but his performance last night was a microcosm of the first quarter of this season. I just don’t think he’s the kind of offensive player that people who weren’t familiar with him before the season were expecting.
*Rhino lost his cool and had a tougher time making buckets in the second half. He got in foul trouble, and at times looked like, well, a rhino in a china shop.
*Foye looks a lot better lately, but he still doesn’t know when to pass and when to shoot. He passes on many open jumpers at the beginning of our offensive sets because he wants to pass the ball at least once before he will consider shooting. But those open j’s are high percentage shots for him, and we’d be better off if he’d shoot some of them. The only way we’ll benefit from having him as our point is if he can use his combo skills to his advantage, i.e., scoring the ball when he can.
The Ugly:
*Shaddy can’t make a shot right now. Now he’s missing all his layups (at least three uncontested ones last night wouldn’t drop in). He’s KILLING any trade value he might’ve had and playing his way out of the rotation. He’s lucky Brewer isn’t healthy, or he might not get off the bench.
*Love’s interior offensive game is still overmatched. Even the guys on Wolves live, who are a pair of committed homers, said last night that they think he might never be able to be effective down there. Ouch.
*Bassy’s shot looks as bad as ever, too. He can’t pose any kind of offensive threat out there, at least right now. I’m not sure what his future is with this team.

Wow this is just RIDICULOUS
Is Stern baffled by the fact the NBA is fighting with the NHL for a distant 3rd behind the NFL and MLB or does he know how poorly mismanaged the NBA is?

Fantasic Post
We cut cable this last summer as part of cost saving moves so my wife could give up her full time job to say home with the baby. I tried the league pass free preview to see how it worked. I scrapped the idea because of the blackouts.
I’ve gone the route of following via Channel 45 and online feeds. If the NBA had allowed me to pay to get ALL of the games that would have been my Christmas present. Baaaaahhhhh.

Gotta say though, this Merlin dude really tries to help ya out and I think he’s pretty clear about how t hings stand at the beginning. Most people would just have stopped at the 10:19:58 mark.
It isn’t his fault off course, on the other hand, always easy for the big bosses to let the helpdesk people explain the stuff they’re doing…
