Philly pick?
So I'm at the Cleveland game last night and my mind inevitably started to wander towards the 2009 draft during the 4th quarter.
I know the Wolves have picks potentially coming from Miami, Boston and Philly along with their own. Was wondering what the protections are for the Philly pick since RealGM does not even acknowledge it on their site.

I would say the Boston pick is a lock since there's no way they're going to get a top-3 pick and the Miami one seems highly possible being only top-10 protected. Thank goodness the pick the Wolves still owe to the Clippers is top-10 protected for another three years yet...

The Philly pick is actually from Utah. It is top 22 protected this year. I’m actually of the opinion that the Wolves should hope Utah continues to stay out of the top 8 teams in the league this year. If they lose Boozer, this pick could become higher over the years:
Picks owed to the Timberwolves
2009 1st round pick from Miami (Davis/Walker trade); top 10 protected in 2009, top 6 protected in 2010, unprotected in 2011
2009 1st round pick from Boston (Garnett trade); top 3 protected in 2009, top 2 protected in 2010 and 2011, unprotected in 2012
2009 1st round pick from Utah via Philadelphia (Carney trade); top 22 protected in 2009, top 17 protected in 2010, top 15 protected in 2011, top 16 protected in 2012 and 2013, unprotected in 2014)
2009 2nd round pick; lowest of Miami, Philadelphia or Indiana’s picks (Chalmers trade)
2009 2nd round pick; second lowest of Miami, Philadelphia or Indiana’s picks (Chalmers trade)
2010 2nd round pick from Houston (Snyder trade)

Agreed on the Utah pick
This team can’t integrate all these picks. The more they have the more they’ll sell.

I actually hope Miami sinks too
As I’ve said before, I really think the Wolves should make it a point to have two picks in their pocket at the start of every draft night.

Thank you!
Now I don’t have to waste my time with RealGM anymore. That site sucks!
In looking at the contract situation beyond this season, I think it’s safe to presume that Collins and Booth won’t have their options picked up. Not sure about Carney or McCants since the team might wait to see how Brewer’s rehab is progressing.
So I would venture that just from a roster limit standpoint, unless they buy out Cardinal or use his expiring contract to pair with another contract in a 2-for-1 swap, I’m thinking there won’t be room to add more than two first-round picks.
I suppose there’s always the option of packaging multiple first-round picks to move up, but I’m not sure I want to contemplate that before knowing what the future of the FO holds…

There never really was...
…a solid way for this team to keep 4 picks. I think they were hoping that Utah would falter or that Miami would suck a bit more so that they could move them into next year or the year beyond. Those late 1st picks are tough. Guaranteed money for questionable talent.

I think the utah pick disappears if we don’t get it within a certain amount of time.
