Ben: (Los Angeles, CA): I have heard a lot of rumors that Ricky Rubio will not declare for the 2009 nba draft. Are the rumors true and if so why do you have Rubio on your mock draft?
SportsNation Chad Ford: He has a large buyout which complicates things. But if he continues to bounce back from injury (he's had two consecutive good games in the Spanish league) he's a likely Top 3 pick in the draft. I don't think he'll pass that by. From what I can gather from my sources, agents will find a way to get him here.

Outside of his play...
…I really know very little about Rubio. But we have a couple recent instances of star/high-profile prospects trying to influence their destination, most memorably Yi JIanlin, but I also recall some rumors of Gallinari attempting something similar (I could be wrong about Gallinari, though).
Anyway, I’m just saying if the first three franchises picking consist of Minny, Memphis, and Oklahoma City (they won’t be, but just a hypothetical), I wonder if that might make Rubio pause about declaring. But who knows?
Speaking of those 3, Minny really, really needs help on the perimeterr while the other 2 really, really need bigs. At this point, barring Rubio declaring, this looks like a 2-player draft with Griffen and Harden. It could get interesting if the lotto balls put these teams in a position at the top of the draft with a player where they have a surplus.

The only way Rubio doesn't end up......
in Minny, OKC, Memphis, etc. is if his stock drops and he falls in the draft order so a “big market” team can draft him.
If he declares, he should be a priority IMO.
