MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The Minnesota Timberwolves fired coach Randy Wittman on Monday, two days after an embarrassing 23-point loss at home to the Los Angeles Clippers. Kevin McHale, the team's vice president of basketball operations, will take over coaching duties, according to a person familiar with the decision who requested anonymity because an announcement had yet to be made. Wittman was 38-105 since taking over for Dwane Casey in January 2007. McHale picked Wittman to preside over the team's massive rebuilding project in the post-Kevin Garnett era. Wittman went 22-60 in his only full season at the helm last year. The team entered this season with higher expectations, but are off to a 4-15 start. After keeping things close in the early going, the Wolves lost by 29 points at New Jersey on Friday night, then were blown out by the lowly Clippers at home on Saturday night to seal Wittman's fate.

Update from the AP. More to follow as it becomes available.
