The New York Knickerbockers President of Basketball Operations Donnie Walsh announced today that guard Taurean Green and guard/forward Bobby Jones have been waived.

Both had been acquired on Monday from Denver, along with a 2010 second-round draft choice, for forward Renaldo Balkman and cash considerations.

From RealGM: if the Wolves are looking for a 3rd PG, they could do worse than Green.

I remember last year I wanted the Wolves to draft Green in the second round and they passed on him.

He’d be an interesting option and I think the Wolves will take a look. It’s been said that they are interested in John Lucas.

Just my opinion...

...but I don’t think Green is near athletic enough to play in the NBA. Played well in college but had some pretty good talent to pass the ball to.

Then again he’s a true point guard who has plenty of experience in big-game situations – not that this will help with the Wolves, mind you, not for a few years at least…

I was also rooting to get Green in the 2nd round in that draft. I have to say that I agree I was probably wrong.

I remain that Livingston is my number 1, Pargo is the number 2 but I’d rather have Green than any of Neitzel/Jeter/Lucas/Ahearn…

But the FO seems to insist that Richar will resign so this would fill our roster. Don’t think we’ll be signing any free agent PG’s. Only maybe trade if a trade comes up…

Would this really...

...leave no room to sign a 3rd pg? I don’t really know about roster limits, etc. Wow, they could be in serious trouble if Foye or Telfair gets injured – will be in trouble, since like everyone they are bound to have the odd little injury – no one else on the roster that I can see is even close to being able to play pg. Can’t they sign Jeter (he’d be my choice, though perhaps you’re right and Green would be better) and put him in the D-league or something? Then again for all I know both Jeter and Green are off to Europe.

Booth gets the boot

I think we’ll buy-out or find some way to move Booth. Madsen is probably expendable now too. We could always look to move Smith too. I would be really surprised if we stayed put and didn’t move one of our “extra” bigs before training camp or heck maybe it would be a in/during training camp bit because of injury.

That having been said I am pretty sure I’m not the only one remembers KG bringing the ball up a few seasons back, essentially running the point due to injuries/lack of talent on the bench. I think we’ve got to bring on a third PG because Telfair and Foye have had injury issues in the past. I think Telfair probably could have played some at the end of the year last season but it might have been a FO move to not let him pad the stats at the end of the season. Heck we didn’t need a few 20 plus point games from Bassy to drive up his value in meaningless games.

I say we move on Green. Worst case scenario Green and Richards play in the d-league. We already know that Green, Richard and Brewer get along from their Florida days and who knows maybe they find some magic together coming off the bench. Green has more then any of the guys we had on the summer league team.

I think Booth's salary...

...is mostly being picked up by Philly. Ditto Carney. I could see them getting cut to make more room.

Question?

What was the Knicks motivation for giving away Balkman? Just cause he sucks? He doesn’t offer any cap space of note.

I thought the MO on him is that he is a high energy, hustle type player. Why would you give someone like that away.

by Pants_ on Jul 30, 2008 11:25 AM CDT   0 recs

yeah good question...

...must be some salary cap thing that I don’t understand. Balkman would seem to fit well with d’Antoni – good defender, athletic fill-the-lanes guy, kind of a poor man’s (well OK destitute man’s) Shawn Marion…er…

After they signed Roberson..

they needed to get rid of a player to get down to 15 on the roster. Balkman doesn’t fit now that D’antoni is there. Green and Jones’ contracts were unguranteed, that’s why it made sense for both teams.

No minutes I think

Not totally sure but I think that Balkman just wasn’t going to see any minutes for the Knicks. Plus from the sound of it he’s a bit of a head case. I can’t think its a huge salary dump for the knicks because the Nuggets have been trying to dump salary themselves.

Balkman was traded because he was a defensive oriented player who wouldn’t fit into Mike’s system + financial things (cap room, not having to pay him, something like that). This is not me speaking, it’s what I read.

A team can have a maximum of 15 players that are under contract. In that group of 12 you can have a maximum of 12 “active” players and 3 “inactive’s”. So if someone’s on the inactive list you can’t use him in a game.
As far as I know (correct me if I’m wrong) that makes you can like have 12 active players and 2 players in the D-league + 1 inactive. This would not surpass the max of 12 actives and 3 inactives. D-leaguers aren’t counted in either the active or inactive list but do count on the total amount of players.

If Richard (not Richards .. and yes, I’m a naggin’ old lady) signs a contract we have 15 contracts.

Buying out a contract does the following:
1) you still pay a part of the salary to that player. The player likes this because he gets some money from buyout + he is free to sign another contract elsewhere, thus kinda getting 2 paychecks for playing only once. The teams like it because they don’t have to pay the full salary for someone they won’t use (or don’t like because he’s a lockerroom problem)

2) The salary counts for the total against your cap (not the bought out part)

3) The player is no longer on the team so even with all the salary things, he’s not counted as player, so it opens up a spot.

If we’d do a 2 for 1 as suggested by SnP (and others) that would off course also mean that we open up an extra spot on the team.

This is why most people think Booth is never gonna play for the T-wolves. They’ll either buy him out (which will save us from paying his full contract while we have no use for him) or use his contract in a 2 for 1 trade.
I’m sure the FO, after signing our Free agents is checking all possibilities. I’m guessing we’ll probably won’t see a move until February. I think it will be the kind of deal that will be halfway when the season ends and then revisited at the trade deadline.

On the other hand, if the right deal comes up ( I don’t think they won’t wait and see what happens between McCants and Foye in the first season together with no injuries) I like signing Green and putting him in the D-League with Richard. Inactive players can’t play anyway.

Also don’t forget you have to be in your first or second year int he NBA to be eligible for the D-League so this is the last year both can play there.

forgot to preview again

In that group of 15

+

My example isn’t clear, just remember that D-leaguers aren’t counted as active nor as inactive and you can have 12 actives max and 3 inactives max. Correct me if I’m wrong.

+

halfway when the season starts (or summer ends)

+

Extra remark: If they do a 2 for and 1 and then buy out that 1 player that would open up 2 spots on the roster and again drastically cut the costs for our beloved owner…

Thanks for the follow up....

I wasn’t taking into account the change of playing style in New York. Should be quite the site seeing Eddie Curry at half court while the team is getting it’s second shot of the possession off.

Booth's salary...

is being picked up by Philly except for $250,000. That’s less than the rookie minimum salary. I bet Glenny really likes that. I think he’ll rot on the end of the bench this year because Taylor is cheap and doesn’t want to pay for the player that would take his spot on the roster.
