Minnesota - Mark Madsen: "There is no one else on the Minnesota Timberwolves (or possibly the league), with the heart, hustle, effort and determination of the Mad Dog. Granted, he may not play many minutes, but he’s the fan favorite that is always giving 110%, whether the Wolves are winning or getting blown out. And for what he lacks in skill, he compensates by being the best towel waving, fist pounding, butt slapping, exuberant 12th man I’ve ever seen."

More importantly

Could they have the intention of resigning him when his contract runs out? Most of the time supports have to BUY tickets, they don’t get PAID for it?

I'm gonna be real honest...

... and let everyone know that I actually voted for Kyle Lowry in that matchup… say what you will.

by wyn on Aug 5, 2008 2:04 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Me too...

...Wyn, after seeing that end-of-the-year 3 point fest from MadDog a few years ago, I wouldn’t vote for the guy if you paid me. If anyone on the team has the chance to turn into the hustle guy, it’s Brewer.

make that 3 of us...

...by the way did you check out Lowry’s numbers? We totally need that dude.

He'd be a very nice...

...2nd or 3rd pg.

C'mon...

It’s not like I had many other options.

I was gonna go with Gomes, but everyone knows about my massive Gomescrush, so that would have been chalked up to extreme bias :-)

by College Wolf on Aug 5, 2008 3:33 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ha!

Gomes and Brewer were the only other two I thought were worth considering. Brewer’s definitely not there yet though.

I think Brewer gets there...

...this year. I think he’ll fit in nicely with Miller, Love and a fully year of Shaddy/Foye.

Exactly!

And Madsen truly does exemplify what this contest was all about… its just that he hardly plays. I mean, yeah he lacks skill, but he fits the guidelines to a “T.”

I was there to witness the 3 point fest against Memphis.

The memory still burns. It was a mockery of basketball.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't his idea...

What’s he gonna do, blatantly disregard what the coaching staff tells him to do? He’s not an insubordinate employee! And no, he doesn’t necessarily deserve all the money that he gets… but who does besides the upper echelon stars? And its sooooo far from an “insane” amount of money that it’s not even funny.

Shame on you haterz that voted against the Mad Dog! He’s pulling away… hopefully he can take the first round matchup!

by College Wolf on Aug 5, 2008 10:50 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes, ignore what his coaching staff told him to do...

...in the last game and show some self respect. It was and always will be a mockery of the game. I remember looking at the bench and seeing players and coaches laughing. It was tanking at its very worst.

I don't hold it against Madsen...

... for chucking the threes. I probably would’ve done it if I were in his position. But I also remember looking at the bench and seeing people laughing. That was indeed a shameful moment. And shame on the coaches for having the players do that. I put the onus on them.

by wyn on Aug 6, 2008 9:58 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It's definitely the coaches fault.

If Madsen would have went against their orders everyone would have ripped him for that too. Lose-Lose for poor Mad Dog. Not his fault they picked him out to do it…

by College Wolf on Aug 6, 2008 12:01 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This is probably an ignorant question, but hasn’t he been costing the Wolves an insane amount of money for a long time now? Which wouldn’t be his fault…guess I’m just biased, I’ve never liked the guy.

by plinytheelder on Aug 5, 2008 9:58 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think it would be fair...

... to say that Madsen’s overpaid. However, $10.05 million over 5 years would not, in my estimation, be an insane amount of money.

I’m a Wolves fan, but I just thought Kyle Lowry did more for his team and was underappreciated more by other fans than Madsen. That seemed to be what the vote was for.

by wyn on Aug 5, 2008 10:12 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oh...

...I thought it was more. I guess the 5 years would qualify more as “insane” than the actual amount, but again, what’s he going to do, turn it down? Go Kyle.

ps for added laughs check out the extremely tepid nomination of former Gopher Kris Humphries by Zarar of “the Arsenalist” (?) – he basically admits that Toronto has no hustle guys, so why not Humphries? My favourite line is about how he goes for rebounds he has no business getting…and doesn’t get them. Oh by the way he’s getting smoked by Reggie Evans.

by plinytheelder on Aug 6, 2008 12:33 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I couldn't believe Humphries...

...got it. That was the worst nomination up there. I did vote for him because I don’t like cheap ass cock punchers like Evans.

I voted for the cheap-ass cock puncher...

But, Jamario Moon would’ve been a much better nominee from the Raptors than Humphries. Sure, Moon’s got less tenure, but he’s a better story after struggling until he was 27 to become an NBA rookie.

by wyn on Aug 6, 2008 10:24 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Great point!

Moon would have been way better. Unfortunately the toughest player on that team is the coach.

By the way, I know the conversation’s not about this, but here’s what bugs me about Madsen. The guy’s been in the league what, 8 years? Dude’s got nothing but time on his hands – he never plays and he has summers off. Why, in all that time, has he never developed a 12-foot jumper? Or the ability to dribble, for that matter? There are some things I like about him – he’s a genuine NBA defender, for short spurts anyways, though he’s not what you’d call great; and he does bring a certain “tone” to rebounding, i.e. this is my f*ing board and you’re not getting it and everyone on the team should think this way. But it strikes me that for a guy who “works his ass off,” he has improved very little. It’s easy to work hard for 2 minutes a game, or for the other 46 while waving a towel, but harder to work hard shooting thousands of jump shots in July.

by plinytheelder on Aug 6, 2008 12:38 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

very well put

He’s like the basketball hero of Frat Boy Nation….if that makes any sense at all.

you'd also think

that with all those summers off he could also work on his tan some. but totally correct that even just the 12-foot jumper would change everything. the ballhandling is asking too much.

i would like to offer another purely anecdotal contribution to this discussion—a memory of a game in 2004 against the lakers where the mad dog, taxed with defending shaq, was bodying him hard by getting super low and literally guarding shaq’s waistline. he looked like a linebacker in a crouch or something. but it was surprisingly effective. (at least it seemed so given the contrast to the other defensive “options” we had.) of course he’d been working on shaq every freaking day when they were in la together. but i guess that’s what practice does for you.
