The Memphis Grizzlies have sent a contract offer worth $58 million to Atlanta Hawks restricted free agent Josh Smith today, according to multiple NBA sources.
As the only team left with significant room under the salary cap, the Griz have shifted out of a summer holding pattern and targeted the versatile 6-9, 235-pound forward.
Atlanta has seven days to match, per league rules, once Smith receives the offer sheet.
From the Memphis Commercial Appeal.
For a GM who took as much crap as he did last year after the Gasol trade (and from yours truly for the Love/Mayo deal), Chris Wallace is one pen stroke away from having a Conley, Mayo, Gay, Smith, (Marc) Gasol starting 5.

Heck of a line-up...
I posted on this as a hypothetical at Twolvesblog a week or so ago. Such a smart move from Memphis. I think this offer is reasonable enough that the Hawks will match it but Memphis has nothing to lose and everything to gain. It isn’t like there is another free agent they are going to offer their money to in the next 7 days.
If Memphis gets Smith it is a good day to be a Memphis fan AND everyone tearing them apart for the Gasol trade will need to eat a little crow. They will have a stud up and comer at every starting position.
If the Hawks don’t match they might as well shut that operation down. Trade Joe Johnson and cash their luxory tax checks because they sure wouldn’t be trying to win basketball games.

I also like that lineup.
Lots of offense, defense and potential. Pretty much all a rebuilding team can ask for.

That would be a very nice group, I have considered Heisley an inept ass ever since the name of that team made sense, but he’d look pretty good if that move went though. Mind you I’m bigger on Smith than most, I think he’ll be a nice player (though only at the 4).

You'd think...
...that Atlanta HAS to match this. If they don’t, pants is 100% right: shut it down.

Maybe they're going for a sign and trade...
...and that this is just the “hey dummies, let’s get it started” opening salvo.

Moreover...
I think Atlanta wouldn’t unless we also threw in Love and something else.
