Big-man prospects Darrell Arthur, Donte Greene and Kostas Koufos had just disappeared from the draft board when the Wolves contemplated selecting Chalmers for themselves and deferred because they already presumably had combo guards Mayo, Randy Foye and Marko Jaric on their roster and intended to re-sign free agent Sebastian Telfair.
"At that point, I just said I don't want to take a guy we'll have to cut because of numbers," said Wolves coach Kevin McHale, then the team's vice president of basketball operations. "Right after we said we'd do the deal with Miami, Memphis called, and we said to each other, 'Well, we would have taken Chalmers.' We were just so loaded up at that combo spot, and then 10 minutes later we weren't."

I really believe this. The way Mayo was introduced and all, if there was no deal it would have been bad to have kept Chalmers. On the other hand. Wasn’t DeAndre Jordan still on the board, he could have been picked and put in the D-League. But I guess that’s McHale not liking his type of Big men.

I agree.
The Chalmers selection was confusing, at the time, with all of those guards on the roster. While he was a steal at #34, he wouldn’t get off our bench if we had Foye, OJ, McCants, Telfair and Jaric. The other guy who slid way past his projection, DeAndre, was the smart pick for a team without a long-term center.
I’ll be interested to see Chalmers tonight, though. Mainly, to see if my suspicions (and Larry Brown’s observations, per Zgoda’s column, today) are correct that his offense is mostly benefitting from playing next to Dwayne Wade, a luxury he wouldn’t have had in Minnesota.
Typical
I love how McHale justifies the deal by saying…
I don’t want to take a guy we’ll have to cut because of numbers
And then goes on to trade him for two second round draft picks in the next draft when we already have (at that time) 3 first round draft picks. I understand the idea of not reneging on a pre-arranged deal, but I still feel that this trade underscores McHale’s lack of foresight. He should have realized (because the average fan watching did) that Chalmers was dropping and Miami DESPERATELY needed a point guard. In the end, these two extra second round draft picks next year may end up being more of a hindrance than a help.
none of it...
…made sense. They had a 1st round talent fall into their laps and if they could perform simple math they should have known that Chalmers, CDR, Kyle Weaver, and Sean Singletary were still on the board and those “10 minutes” didn’t matter one damn bit because they still would have received a quality player at the spot they were trying to open up. They absolutely FUBAR’d the pick.

The concept of "best player available" seems to have eluded Mr. McHale in those ten minutes
As well as the possibility to move good players a little after the heat of the draft is over to get what you want. Or did the team just want the cash?
you of all people...
…should know what McHale’s stance is towards getting money for players ;)
There’s no such thing as a Pritch slap without a certain player being shipped out for Foye + a million bucks.
