GameThread: vs. Heat

Miami Heat at Minnesota Timberwolves, Jan 13, 2009 7:00 PM CST

Omg_heat_game_medium

Tonight is the big test of the Wolves' recent success. Either we prove that we can beat .500+ teams, or we prove that we can't.... yet.

I'll be at the game. Keep it clean and friendly. Mayn.

are the heat

a particularly good rebounding team? They sure look good so far. Looked like a bit of a push by Haslem on Smith but the refs aren’t going to call that very often.

by plinytheelder on Jan 13, 2009 7:29 PM CST reply actions

Not Really a Rebounding Squad

They Really Dont have Much Size down Low besides Beasley whos 6’9….Blount is 7’0 and he does play…Jamal Magliore is 6’11..He Doesnt Play… For Guys that Do play…Joel Anthony is 6’9 and Udonis Haslem is 6’8…

I think a new question for the Wolves . . .

. . . is will they be able to re-sign Cardinal for anything less than the mid-level exception?

Foye has already played 38 minutes, Bassy has played only 27

BTW:

With all the Miami love for Love I thought I’d revisit our season preview predictions for ROY:

Wim:

1. Greg Oden
2. Derrick Rose
3. Michael Beasley
4. Kevin Love

Auswolf:

(i) Oden
     (ii) Westbrook
     (iii) Beasley
     (iv) Gallinari
     (v) Rose
     (vi) Love

Peter W:

Oden (if healthy)
Rose
Beasley
Mayo
Westbrook/Love
Bayless
Hickson
Thompson

Me:

Beasley
Darrell Arthur
Kevin Love
Marreese Speights
Jason Thompson

Pants:

Beasley
someone not in the top 10 picks
Love
Oden
Westbrook

MSA:

Oden, Beasley, Mayo, Love – not to imply the trade was bad, I just think OJ will get more opportunities to score

McCleak:

3) Love will finish 3rd, behind Greg Oden and Michael Beasley. He might very well play better than Oden, however.

DR_JPK: Love gets it or sucks

Dave W:

(3) Kevin Love will finish 3rd behind Oden and Beasley. He has a shot at the 2nd spot but Beasley’s higher profile and raw stats will likely out-do him.

The World's Leading Exporter of Small Area Quickness
www.canishoopus.com

by Stop-n-Pop on Jan 13, 2009 9:17 PM CST reply actions

I forgot Sterno:

3) Beasley wins the ROY. No one is going into a better situation, and Oden will not be an offensive powerhouse, which will hurt him in the ROY voting. If Love stays healthy, he finishes in the top 5

Solid call on Oden.

I agree -

but the thing is, the Wolves had no timeouts left, and needed all their 3-pt shooters in. That means they have to take either Jefferson or Love out.

If they have timeouts remaining, they can get the rebound, call timeout, then insert Miller.

I think that's a solid take...

…Big Al had an off night. McHale made the right moves down the stretch if you go by the percentages. You have to have your best player and best 3 point shooter on the floor and Love and Bassy threw away 2 passes down the stretch. After I have my head screwed back on straight after this one I think he played it right.

yeah

I was just saying to my wife how much nicer this is to watch than all those 30-pt losses in Nov.

I think we're hanging Miller out to dry too quickly.

The guy’s been one of the best shooters in the game for a long time. He’ll get his stroke back, just needs to find a rhythm.

by plinytheelder on Jan 13, 2009 9:40 PM CST reply actions

i know he can still shoot....

…i just want him to do it for cleveland in exchange for Wally (+ cardinal on the Wolves’ end)

JJ Hickson?

If they’d even trade him.

by RCollin on Jan 13, 2009 9:44 PM CST up reply actions

I wouldn't even ask...

…they just need expiring contracts for Miller + Cardinal.

I guess.

It’d be nice to at least try and snag a nice talent like him, though. In playing with the trade machine, Miller + Collins for Wally + Lorenzen Wright works. Both expirings.

by RCollin on Jan 13, 2009 9:51 PM CST up reply actions

yep..

….if they can move Miller they’re the big dogs in this off-season. they’ll have 20+ mil below the cap

20+ mil + 4 possible 1st rounders = fun

My ultimate hope is that they trade for AK47 + get lucky in the lotto with Rubio. If they get lucky they should contact Utah and offer them all the other picks + anyone but Love/Jefferson/Foye for AK.

Didn't I read something that Rubio wasn't coming until '10?

I know it wasn’t 100%, but from what I read, it seemed like they were going to wait another year. I would LOVE the AK with Love/Jefferson/Foye. I would like Jennings with that group, too, because I think he’s got a huge huge upside and is a legit PG.

by BDavige on Jan 13, 2009 11:02 PM CST up reply actions

Actually I know of a cap clearing trade that Glen Taylor would LOVE

Now that is looks like Miles’ contract is gonna be put back on the Blazers, they aren’t going to have the cap room they thought.

If they have any interest in Mike Miller, we could ship him and Collins to Portland for Raef Lafrentz + player/asset. I’m pretty sure that insurance is paying like 2/3 of Raef’s contract or something like that. That would make Glen happy.

by roundhouse on Jan 13, 2009 9:49 PM CST up reply actions

insurance is prorated...

…and would cover pretty much the rest of the year….I’d still make that trade as long as they threw in Batum.

I think it was in a Chad Ford chat

that insurance doesn’t transfer in a trade…. is that not true?

this might be a stupid question

but what would Miller bring to the table in Cleveland that Wally doesn’t?

by Pants_ on Jan 13, 2009 9:48 PM CST up reply actions

I'm just guessing

that given a choice between Wally and Miller, most teams would take Miller, especially with how poorly Wally played in the playoffs last year.

by plinytheelder on Jan 13, 2009 9:57 PM CST up reply actions

Give Miller a couple of weeks without being injured,

and he’ll be putting up solid numbers. Guy’s a player.

Well, it was a fun game. I thought the Wolves controlled the pace well throughout most of it, but the Heat stuck around. And when things grinded to a halt at the end, that was it. Al’s turnover after backing down low for, oh, 20 seconds or so was a killer. He’ll have better games, of course, although Miami’s a team you’d think Jefferson could destroy.

Another good game from Foye. I’m coming around to him, even if his scoring will likely come back to earth a little. The Dude was really looking to RUN tonight.

I think trading Miller makes sense. I think he’s a good player, and his overall game’s always been a bit underrated. I think he’s an ideal 6th man, and with the way Foye’s been playing, that’s Miller’s ideal position currently on the Wolves.

Trouble is, the Wolves aren’t the type of team right now that needs a 6th man making $9 million.

I think ya'all saw the same things I did at the game...

- couldn’t believe the star calls for Wade
- Miller and Al looked bad
- Telfair and Love had VERY costly errors down the stretch
- Randy IS actually starting to make the Roy trade look better (not good, but better)
- Cardinal is a better, less goofy version of Mad Dog

Also, 247 comments in a GameThread is something to be proud of. You guys and gals are a great group of Wolves fans. I’m proud to be a part of it.

Good crowd tonight, wyn?

Appeared that way on TV. Fewer empty seats; some non-jumbotron-provoked, in-action standing O’s.

by jianfu on Jan 13, 2009 11:07 PM CST up reply actions

It was a pretty good crowd

Wade got the biggest ovation during pre-game.

After going to games in Portland, Golden State and Chicago in the last few years, it’s become painfully obvious how quiet the Target Center is, though. I don’t expect us to equal those other arenas, but even during timeouts in the 4th quarter, it’s pretty quiet.

Re: Jefferson:

I didn’t hear about this during the game but it turns out he got 7 stitches to close a cut over his eye at halftime! Guess I’d probably play pretty poorly too if that happened to me.
