After 40
It's that time of the year again. Time to see how Our Beloved Puppies Zombies are doing compared to last year and earlier in the season. Click on the link to read below the fold.
We're going to narrow things down from here on out because this post in its previous iterations was a big gangly. Here are the team's shooting details from after 20:
| 65% | .427 | 57% | 46.4 | 67% | .451 | 65% | 48.0 | ||
| 29% | .553 | 48% | 27.0 | 25% | .586 | 54% | 23.3 | ||
| 3% | .890 | 70% | 5.1 | 6% | .928 | 79% | 8.5 | ||
| 2% | .598 | 0% | 1.9 | 2% | .478 | 0% | 1.3 | ||
| 100% | .484 | 53% | 80.4 | 100% | .513 | 62% | 81.1 | ||
Here they are after 40:
| 62% | .411 | 63% | 42.5 | 68% | .456 | 59% | 49.3 | ||
| 33% | .541 | 47% | 29.8 | 26% | .565 | 49% | 23.7 | ||
| 3% | .921 | 67% | 4.3 | 5% | .942 | 78% | 6.8 | ||
| 2% | .548 | 0% | 2.1 | 2% | .620 | 0% | 1.6 | ||
| 100% | .471 | 55% | 78.8 | 100% | .509 | 56% | 81.5 | ||
The thing that jumps out here is the slight uptick in close range shots. These stats do not tell you how much better the Wolves are shooting from 3 and how many more long balls they are taking. I'll fix this problem in next year's splits. We'll keep track of that number.

The MVP over the last 20 is clearly Randy Foye. Check out what has happened at the 2. The Wolves now have 2 functional positions. Also check out what is happening at the 4. Kevin Love is stabilizing that spot by moving Gomes out of his extended minutes there. Once Love holds down the starting spot at the 4 look for the Wolves to have 3 functional positions.

What you need to notice here is that the Wolves have increased their eFG, increased their ratio of offensive rebounds collected/opponent offensive rebounds limited by +1.3, and done a better job of keeping their opponents away from the free throw line. I'm a bit surprised their pace didn't quicken more than it did.

After 40:
A few things to note:
- Foye had an incredible series of 20 games
- Brian Cardinal started to take care of the ball
- Kevin Ollie was playing like a Super Bassy
- Bassy started to get to the line more
- Mike Miller's free throw shooting is scary

It's still jacked up...
…BTW: we get our stats from Knickerblogger, 82Games, and YahooSports. You can find the links to these wonderful sites in our sidebar and I will get them in this post as soon as I get the formatting squared away.

What baffles me the most is still the NET efficiency at SF. It’s the same players that were playing at the SG spot + Gomes. I don’t get whats going wrong there, sheer lack of talent? Than how is the SG sport so functional … is it just Foye?

I think you can attribute the SF....
…situation to Gomes’ up-and-down nature and that he should be coming off the bench as a glue guy.

So if I get it right the next move should be to clean up Miller, Mccants, Brewer and Carney and get a starting value SF. Or are we still thinking Brewer is a starting caliber SF? Hope he’s working that body like h*ll right now…
Or maybe we’re hanging on to Gomes too much. If we really want to add a starting SF; how ’bout letting go of Gomes and sticking Brewer to the backup role at SF. Especially if we keep Miller around.
Or maybe use Carney more than Gomes. Does Carney really provide less than Gomes? Gomes might actually have the highest trade value out of the whole group.

I fear moving Gomes...
But I know it’s based more on my affection for the type of player Gomes is. He’s a 6th man that can come in at the 3 or 4, so if we keep him and go after a 3, it’d have to be someone who can switch to the 2 to make room for Gomes.
The guys we’ve looked at (Butler, Wallace, Kirilenko) and not 2/3s, they’re either 3s or 3/4s. Doesn’t bode well for Gomes.

Now that I think about it...
… Mike Miller’s the kind of 2/3 I have in mind (but with better defense, of course)

doesn’t the draft have some guys that could be sf/sg? Granted there’s no way to know if any of them end up as could as Kirilenko.

It's pretty thin at the 3...
…Earl Clark, Kyle Singler, and Chase Budinger probably are the 3 best prospects there.

If I were running things...
…in Wolves land, I would move Gomes to the bench, try to work out a sign-and-trade with Marvin Williams and if that doesn’t work go after Trevor Ariza. If they can land one of those 2 guys as a free agent, they let Carney go, hope for the best with Brewer as a backup 2/3 and let Gomes sub at the 3/4. They then hope like hell that they can land a point in the draft.

I don't get the Ariza fetish...
he’s certainly improved his game over the last two years, but i just don’t see him raising it to the level that we need a Small Forward to have.

+ let go of Miller and Mccants right? Since Foye is getting a lot of minutes at the 2 and the plan still is to tone the numbers of players down.
I don’t see how anyone else can get minutes with Foye, Brewer at the 2 and Williams, Brewer, Gomes at the 3
