McHale: "Miller is not on the market"
Granted, this is in a column by Grandpa Sports, but this is a troubling comment from the guy who was banished from the front office just over a month ago. A real reporter would have followed up on this fairly major statement but this is El Sid we're talking about. Why is the Wolves' head coach making personnel statements?

Not as bad as it appears
SNP,
I view it as McHale supporting Miller and building his confidence. Does McHale really have say in personnel decisions anymore? Probably not much. In fact, a statement like that might actually help drive up Miller’s trade value if a team does come calling. To me it is a win -win comment, build Miller’s confidence and trade value… I’m sure Miller would be willing to leave the wolves if LA, Cleveland, or another top level team came calling.
Thanks for the info!

Yeah..
…it’s a weird comment and I really didn’t know how to read it. On one hand, it’s from Grandpa Sid. On the other hand, either McHale misspoke or he’s stepping where he shouldn’t…or, he still has the Reusse conspiracy pull in the front office. It just seems to me that if the Wolves were running a tighter ship in the front office, stuff like this wouldn’t see the light of day. The guy was banished from the front office and Jim Stack’s name should be on the quote.

A few options....
on how to read this.
1. Stack’s saying he is in charge and keeping things close the vest in general was complete BS
2. McHale was talking out of turn and out talking of his @$$
3. We are in a grey area where Stack is generally incharge of GM duties but if his wishes don’t jive with McHale then McHale wins
4. We are in a grey area where Stack is generally incharge of GM duties but if his wishes don’t jive with McHale then McHale throws a fit and Taylor tells McHale to coach the team he is given.

Why can't they just have a normal front office with a clear chain of command and a unified front?
Is that too much to ask?

I interpret
on the market to mean McHale (et al) are NOT actively shopping him in order to move him. My guess is that the Twolves are really not in that position – the don’t NEED to move him.
However, I guarantee that should a reasonable offer be made at the deadline, Miller is gone.

In spite of whether McHale is making the decision or not...
You really have to wonder what would happen if Jim Stack moved Miller. Stack has been McHale’s subordinate for years, and McHale has openly told the press that he doesn’t want Miller moved.
To me it sounds like McHale still thinks he decides who goes and who stays. I suppose we’ll have to wait and see whether that is true or not.

and there's the other big angle....
…that just doesn’t sit right with me. It’s just not his place to do this anymore considering his history. He should have known better. Very unprofessional. All he had to do is give the diplomatic “Mike Miller is a fantastic asset to our team on and off the court and I will enjoy coaching him for as long as I can. As for the trade rumors, you’ll have to talk to Jim about that stuff.”

I think you guys hit the nail on the head -
even if he isn’t going to be moved, it’s not in McHale’s job description to say so – it would be like Taylor or Stack saying “we’re going to play zone at least 25% of the time” or “Carney will get 30+ minutes a game.” Unfortunate.

Guys
First off, it is the very, very rare player who is labeled “on the market” by any team. It is usually a guy, like a Ron Artest, who has so much baggage that the team does not want him. Current examples would be Stephan Marbury and James Tinsley.
For McHale to say Miller is not on the market is just confirming the company line. I bet if you search, you will find nearly every coach making a similar comment about a player once and awhile.
Now, if McHale blurts out “I don’t want Miller traded for XXX”, then I will sound the alarms. But I think this is much ado about nothing.
I am going to go back in my hole and cry about not getting Noah from Chicago months ago when it looked like Chicago might have been stupid enough to trade him.

I understand your point...
And I feel like in most circumstances what you’re saying is true. But the fact that McHale has been running the operation for over ten years before being “demoted” a month ago makes this situation completely different. McHale’s comment can’t be used in the context of “nearly every coach” because his situation is so much different than “nearly every coach”.

Jeebus, Who Would Take Him At This Point?
The guy is a mess and he’s getting hurt all the time.

Hey I'm not Against Dealing Him
I’m just saying that his trade value is falling faster than the value of my 201(k) (formerly 401(k))

NEWSFLASH: Apparently the Cavs talked internally about Miller
http://www.news-herald.com/articles/2009/01/25/sports/nh395416.txt
One player the Cavs have reportedly targeted internally is Timberwolves guard Mike Miller. However, scouts are wondering what’s going on with the 6-foot-8 Miller, who prior to Friday hadn’t scored more than eight points in any of his first nine games since his return from a sprained ankle in December.
“(My ankle is) not where I want it to be, but it’s not an excuse,” Miller said.
He had 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists in Friday’s win over New Orleans.

I wonder when that "my ankle is not where I want it to be"
quote is from? His slump is so bad that I think it’s more than a slump.

I love the whole "I'll bring up this problem as an excuse, but it's not an excuse" line.

I think he wants his ankle
to be right above his foot and below his calf.

Also, lower in that article you linked to
“— The Nets are trying to upgrade the small forward position and are offering Bobby Simmons in trade talks. They’ve spoken to the T-Wolves about Miller and the Bulls about Larry Hughes.”
