Not a Grizzly, and not a Timberwolf.
Star Tribune | 3 Shades of Blue | Beyond the Arc | Yahoo
It's been a busy day here at Hoopus, with plenty of Mayo/Love talk to boot. So, I'll leave it to the game for more points of discussion, save for one:
For his own sake, I hope Rashad McCants has been working harder at practice than he has at poetry.
Go Wolves.

I hadn't seen it before...
…but how funny is it that Shaddy put up the picture of him lighting the cupcake on his website? Here’s the caption:
“Rashad was the set-up man for defending champ Gerald Green.”
After he flames out in the NBA Shaddy has a future as a resume writer. He can inflate with the best of them.

Oh Jeez,
You know Poetry is hard. If you have read any Robert Bly, you would have no doubt that he is an accomplished poet. Has he written bad poems? I mean fuck, try writing for yourself poetry. Writing poems will inevitably lead to bad poems and many you will be later embarassed for. But poetry is much bigger than one poem. Poetry is all encompassing. It is one person’s life. I learned from Wyn’s link that Rashad writes poems. He has given an inside glimpse into his life that most people do not have the courage to do. Is he a great poet? That is not for me to decide, but I sure respect him for trying and putting his stuff out there. He may be screwing up his basketball career, or maybe poets, sensitive types that are prone to introspection, just don’t make good basketball players. Great basketball players leave there poetry on the court.
But, I have to say, I think its pretty damn pathetic to link Rashad to Robert Bly with the intention of proclaiming that both are bad poets. It only demonstrates you know little about poetry and likely life in general. I hate to say it about you S-n-P because you are a one fine basketball mind, but you could not do yourself any harm by spending some time reading a little poetry and a Robert Bly anthology would not be a bad place to start.
In the meantime may I recommend a Minnesota up and Coming Todd Boss’s Yellowrocket

Sorry
That comes off as kind of harsh. I don’t mean to sound harsh and it is a basketball site afterall and not a poetry one. I don’t read a lot of poetry, but I try and get through a book now and then, and I have read a good share of Bly. Americans don’t have much of an appreciation for poetry in comparison to other cultures. There is way too much emphasis on Pop culture from the airwaves that makes it hard to appreciate good writing. Rashad has also obviously been influenced by this pop culture and it shows in his poems, but there is a little light there shining through as he struggles to identify who he is. As I said, Poetry is hard and he probably would have been better off leaving his poetry in a personal journal and not shared it until he had honed his craft a bit more. Still, you shouldn’t condemn him for trying. However, the comments section, singing his praises, aren’t doing him any good either. He needs some serious criticism if he wants to be a writer. But, my guess is that Rashad the writer is similar to Rashad the basketball player and he wouldn’t respond to serious criticism very well.
But Bly? Two different people. Bly may have sold his entire work to the U of M, but he did not live his entire life in the lap of luxury. He has lived a poets life and given many gifts to those who appreciate poetry and writing. I’m not talking about the “Iron John” Bly and the backlash that resulted from those who couldn’t get past nor understand his promotion of “mens groups” and “drumming in the woods” and insisted he was a misogynist alongside his contemporary writers recieveing similar criticism from the PC crowd such as Updike, Mailer, Roth and others. I’m talking about Bly’s poetry and his valuable translations of poetry and poets from other cultures.
The link you provided is from someone who admits he is a “man with no discernable poetic gifts,” and offers little in the way of serious criticism of Bly’s work.
But enough about Poetry. McCants played zero minutes last night with Ollie injured and whether he can accept serious criticism of his play we are going to find out. I think McHale’s treatment with Love is also being given to McCants and it should be. He is going to have to learn to appreciate his playing time when it comes if it ever does again. Even Oliie being hurt and Miller going down with a sprain in the second qtr is not going to be another gift for playing time.

Couldn't agree more
The Wolves PR staff should have to make that release pretty much every day.
How can a 2 guard be considered a “cornerstone” in this league and not be able to go left? Then on top of that he’s a “combo” guard. What a joke.
When Garnett was running the point a few years back he was more apt to go left!

whoa, hang on
I think you’re taking the point a bit too far. One of the instances in the first half when he went left ended up with a Jefferson dunk off a beautiful feed.
It’s true that he goes right more than left. But 1. I don’t think this indicates lack of ability – I’ve seen him go left plenty of times with good results; 2. why not go right if it works? of the 3 times I remember him going that way in the first half, he got fouled once and blocked (but retained possession) once…only once did it simply end up in a miss. Why not do it until someone stops you?

Man, what is wrong with Conley?
Foye is basically free to leave him and double down any time he wants. His confidence must be shot. It’s too bad, I think he could really be a good player.

almost as bad as Memphis needed Mayo in there 3 minutes earlier.
Our offense looks pretty rough, right now—Jim Pete is saying that Foye’s shot was easy—it was a pretty-well contested 3.

What will suck about this game...
…is that this is the time of the game that the Wolves need someone like Mayo. This is where their perimeter guys really let them down. I like the deal and I really like Love’s game, but Mayo is clearly better than Foye and he would help here.

In order to get another roster spot...
… you need to get a “Disabled Player Exception.” I haven’t looked it up to find out precisely why, but Brewer doesn’t qualify.

An uneven game out of Jefferson, but for once the guard play wins them a game. Foye’s clearly a better player now that he’s not being asked to “run the point” (e.g., dribble it down and dump it to Al). And I’m digging Telfair (if only he had just a little bit of finishing ability, as he can penetrate any time he wants).
Marc Gasol has upside, but also has terrible hands.
The Grizzlies may be an awful team, but I think they have some of the best uniforms in the league. (I’ve soured on the Wolves’, btw; I’ve gone from “luke warm” on them to really despising them. Those damn trees, I think.)
Rudy Gay really did a lot of damage to the Grizzlies cause down the stretch.
