It's official: Memphis is my new 2nd favorite team!!!
"TORONTO — Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace said Friday night the team has signed veteran forward Darius Miles to a 10-day contract.
Amid simmering controversy, the move sets the stage for Miles to continue a comeback attempt from major knee surgery and adversely affect his former team’s salary cap situation in the process."
Congrats to Memphis on their Pritch-slap of Portland. Keep an eye on 3 Shades of Blue and Beyond the Arc for more.

Good to see...
You have to wonder if they let him go in the first place because of a threat, and then when the NBA said they’d back teams brought him back. Now, play him the next two games and show the Blazers!

They let him go...
…so they wouldn’t have to guarantee his contract for the entire year. It was a financial move and this one is too. Portland will have to pay out a luxury tax penalty and the Griz will get a check that will cover Miles’ contract. I love the Griz. I take back any mean things I have ever said about them.

It's nice to see....
….another team with over-reaching/bumbling front office decisions. Think of it from a fan perspective as joining the club. ;) There was a point in all of this where McHale was actually a respected GM. KG + Garnett was supposed to be epic and then the Starbury craziness, 99 Draft and Joe Smith turned it in the wrong direction. They got too cute.

I think...
…the whole Steph/99 thing is the most regrettable chapter in Wolves history. I don’t think we’ve ever really visited this little tidbit on the site. If Steph stays they don’t draft Will Avery and likely look for a SF like Artest or AK47 as Wally is already off the board with the pick they would have never received from the Nets.

Hilarious...
I was really surprised at Portland’s threats. Seems so strange.
Of course, I say this as a Wolves fan who is used to catching almost every single bad break imaginable when it comes to the basketball operations. If the Wolves were in Portland’s position, we’d all be like “of course we’re going to see our potential cap space evicerated; would’ve been nice if he hadn’t signed, but oh well…”
But when you’re on a run like Portland’s been on—drafting the right guys, winning the lottery, pulling off impossible trades, basically turning around a horrible situation on a dime—then maybe testiness and lunacy is to be expected when they hit a pot hole in their otherwise supremely privileged world. Maybe that threat to sue was their “I’m Keith Hernandez” moment.

I wasn't surprised at the threat per se
more about the way it was worded. It was a BIT strong, but at the same time, I just KNOW danny ainge was planning on screwing over the Blazers. When you think about it, its a total dick move to do to another team, but apparently memphis doesnt care. my favorite thing about this though, is that Michael Heisley gave a crap. Last time I checked, he didnt care about basketball at all. otherwise he wouldnt have such a horribly run team.

From the other 29 teams' perspective...
….it had to happen. If you guys could run wild as the only player in the 09 free agency season (which is top-notch btw), it could be problematic to the winning prospects of everyone else except whoever has LeBron. The Crab Dribbler is the one thing standing in anyone’s way right now and he probably will be for several years to come. With Wally coming off the books this year and ZI next year they can add a piece per year and…well, I think they’re being overlooked as being the team of the future. You guys have a lot of nice pieces but they have the best player on the planet in his prime with a solid supporting cast and a superior coach.

You go Memphis!
You were right that a team would sign him to a ten day contract, and that’s what I feared all along because it just makes business sense (as outlined in my “Darius Miles Chronicles” on BE). But don’t come telling that is a more morally justified behavior than sending out the e-mail. They do it to collect the financial rewards of screwing Portland’s cap and pocketing the $250K (one of the teams below the cap and thus the tax). Hard to believe they are interested in Darius the player. We’ll see if that results in some ugly legal war.

If the doctors are right and Miles ends up a cripple
will Memphis still be your favorite team?
I used to feel sorry for T-Wolves fans but this is so cynical. Maybe you deserve McHale. And Brad Childress, assuming you are football fans. And whoever is wrecking the Twins lately. But I suppose knowing that you could have Mayo and Roy on your team right now is worth a hit in capspace.

Sorry..
…Miles is a grown man who wants to play. It’s not cynical in the least. Portland wanted the benefits of this guy being declared medically retired and now that he isn’t and the benefits have disappeared, they still want his money off the cap (to say nothing of the insurance dollars). We don’t need your pity.
