GameThread #1: vs. New Jersey
New Jersey Nets at Minnesota Timberwolves, Oct 28, 2009 7:00 PM CDT
No matter where you stand as a Wolves fan today (optimistic, pessimistic, irate, overjoyed, etc) it's going to be an interesting year. Wins and losses in the KE (Kahn Era) start piling up tonight and there remain many known knowns (we're without Kevin Love for another month at least), known unknowns (will Corey Brewer live up to the expectations that have dwindled over time?), unknown knowns (we don't know what they are), unknown unknowns (don't know what they are either).
So saddle up to your TVs and monitors Wolves fans, it could be a long while until we get to GameThread 82.
PS You didn't miss Britt's preview did you? I should hope not.

if you can get the replay...
….on LP…just watch the 4th. It was a 60/40 combo of good Wolves/bad Nets. Some good defense and transition offense from the Wolves led by Flynn getting to the line and Brewer on d, and New Jersey played the NBA equivalent of prevent defense by doing away with what built them the lead in favor of “shortening” the game. In the end, they lost momentum and couldn’t get back into the swing of things. Lopez could have scored 50 tonight but they chose not to ride that horse.

Looking at the box score
The FTM and FGM were close, but we made one 3 to their 0 and they turned the ball over way more. I saw that boxscore and I couldn’t believe we won.

Get used to it. Even early last night, I was scratching my head and wondering how we were even in the context. The Wolves are going to crank out some weird, weird box scores this season.

Just like the preseason, where they’d be outrebounded, outassisted, have more turnovers and be shooting a worse % from the field, and yet somehow have 10 more shots than the other team and only be down 2 points.
When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead. True story.

Not so sure
I think they’re going to let Flynn take his lumps this year and that’s fine. He seems to have a thick enough skin to bounce back from many a tough outing. But c’mon Kurt, how much worse is Flynn-Sessions for stretches, then say, Flynn-Pavlovic or Flynn-Ellington? You can’t play your second best player for less than 25 minutes per night. You just can’t do it.
by Rascal Flatts on Oct 28, 2009 8:25 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Kurt will not let Flynn...
Play as out of control as he has been so far. Part of his lumps will be getting benched…and I agree he’ll overcome it.
Sessions makes more sense with Big Al. Jonny would be a great energy guy to bring off the bench…

I don't think...
Giving Jonny 20-25 minutes off the bench would be any kind of admission of failure…

I want to congratulate David Kahn...
For proving a long-time theory of mine wrong tonight. I always thoughts points could come from just about anywhere. Sure, talented scoring teams are better, but I figured even five stiffs would average 90 points/game.

It was close...
But he had hand on ball first from what I saw.

Brewer
Was the only Wolf to crack 30 minutes. Really?? Flynn gets a respectable 29, Sessions gets a Dangerfield-esque 19 minutes. Bears watching.

He was a +3
He may have been trainwreck with his shot, but the man has no quit in him otherwise.

yeah...
…it’s just so tough to watch him get in position to do well on the offensive end only to fubar it with bad shots and an amazing inability to catch a pass

it was almost comical at the game...
to hear the “crowd” get noticably/audibly excited when he’d make a good defensive play/take off like a bat out of hell down the court/etc. and then just completely eff up when he got near the basket. Lots of “ohhhhhhhs” and “awwwwwws”

Talk about spreading it around
Eleven guys played. Everybody scored. Everybody got a board. Everybody got an assist except the White Hole (in 5 minutes, least by far – Sasha’s 18 the next least). Everybody took between 4 and 14 shots and made between 1 and 5 of them.Ten players with 1-2 assists. Nine players got an offensive board. Eight got 18-26 minutes. Eight scored between 7-12 points. Seven got 3-6 boards.
All right, brain. You don't like me and I don't like you, but let's just do this and I can get back to killing you with beer.

I'm not sure if we're making enough of..
The fact that Jonny Flynn totally carried the offense down the stretch. It was a classic “defer-in-the-first-3-quarters, attack-in-the-fourth” game. Devin Harris, who is a blur himself, could not stay in front of Flynn all quarter. He could have gotten to the line on every single possession, it seemed like.
Not to be a kneejerk, but Flynn in the fourth tonight looked like a player who could eventually carry a playoff team. All that talk about leadership, charisma, and intangibles was totally on display tonight.

Jonny Flynn is the effin' TRUTH!
In his first game, though he had some typically rookie-like mistakes,
Jonny totally controlled this game in the last 8 minutes.
We may have a TOTAL stud on our hands here guys.

Let's hope this game...
… is the last in which we see Brewer leading in shots taken. Big defense down the stretch from the kid, and I still pull for him, but…. dude.

Whew...
- that game just goes to show why pushing the tempo is the right way to play in today’s NBA and defense will become important in fueling that transition game
- I don’t know that they stopped going to the triangle but just had a lot of their offense come from transition in the 4th; however, Jackson has always done the same thing with the triangle (rely on the top offensive threats in the 4th and sometimes stray from the triangle)
- Hollins needs to become more fundamentally sound on both ends
- Wilkins is going to be in the rotation all season if he plays 75% as well as he did tonight
- Stewie is a garbage time player but had a nice move taking Yi off the dribble
- Sessions helped get that comeback started by pushing the ball and getting in the lane; I just wish he could shoot
- Gomes needs to play either as a small 4 or a spot-up 3 to be effective on offense
- Flynn will succeed where Foye failed; scoring inside and drawing fouls. Both he and Sessions need to work better with Jefferson and vice versa
- Pavlovic is solid defensively but dribbled too much and was laying bricks
- Cardinal did about what could be expected; wish he was a better rebounder
- Ellington surprised me the most: got after it on D, grabbed loose balls, finished when open.
- Brewer was just awful finishing: his footwork on offense is probably his worst trait. I’m not sure why he was on the floor at the end, but he was the epitome of the famous quote by John Wooden: “Never mistake activity for achievement.”
- Jefferson can’t be evaluated athletically until the season plays itself out; the fact that he’s on the court for the opener is amazing in itself. He seemed very tentative for the first 3 quarters but stepped up in the fourth. But he needs to pass the f*ckin’ ball to Flynn and Sessions when they cut past him on the elbow and they need to find him in the lane on their forays to the hoop.
- Brook Lopez is damn good player who looks awkward and mechanical on postups; a better postup player would’ve never had his shot blocked like that because they would’ve shielded their shooting arm enough that Al wouldn’t have been able to reach it.
- Man, the Wolves could use a guy like Terrence Williams.
- I can’t wait to read MAYNHOLUP’s take on this one.

RE: Al passing out
to me it looked like the game opened up in the 4th when Al started passing out of the block. Coincidentally, without having kept notes, it looked like he didn’t shoot the ball once during the last 5 minutes, and instead drew a double and kicked it out.
Small sample size, but if he’s learned a thing or two about facilitating, that’s a hell of a thing.
by losDelFuego on Oct 28, 2009 11:03 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I love me some Love, without a doubt, but how good would Lopez look next to Al? And yeah, Twill’s athleticism was on clear display and is disgusting. This team needs that type of athleticism at a swing position in a big way.
When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead. True story.

Some weird stats: 1 made 3 total in the game; the Wolves had more steals and offensive rebounds than assists
by pagingstanleyroberts on Oct 28, 2009 10:19 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Neither of those teams will win 30 games...
so it was a great matchup.
Vintage Brewer – terrible offense, partially made up for with steals and loose balls.
Jefferson is nowhere near 100%.
Hollins has a jumpshot.
Flynn needs to become as physical as Sessions — he started to in the 4th. Fun finish for him.
I agree with PSR – Terrance Williams would look good in a Wolves uniform. He can really pass and handle the rock for a big guard. I don’t expect CDR to hold down that starting spot for much longer.
How did Jim Peterson take it to Brook Lopez in those workouts? Lopez is tough.

Want to give yourself a smile?
Take a look at all the guys we “should have” taken in the draft. Curry is 1-6, Thabeet barely got on the floor, Evans shot 5-16 and was a -20, DeRozan (who I wanted over Rubio) had 8 pts and 5 boards with a +16 but he’s obviously going to need more time to develop
Admittedly the sample size is so small as to be minute, but when Flynn is taking over games in the 4th quarter, in HIS FIRST NBA GAME, it has to give us all a warm feeling inside
by Son of Gerald Green on Oct 28, 2009 11:15 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Not to harp on the particulars, but we couldn’t have taken Thabeet or Evans. And I watched the GSW-Hou game, Curry absolutely looked like he belongs, from what I saw. I have no idea what his stat line ended up looking like, but he’s going to be good.

Curry made a great opening statement tonight about his ability to be an NBA point guard.
Thabeet, Evans and Harden all looked bad though…
On the other hand, Ty Lawson looked fantastic.
by Oceanary on Oct 29, 2009 12:28 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
Curry looked very good running the point. A completely different player with a different game than Flynn (no FT attempts), but he did a good job of facilitating and every other warrior attacked the rim. He had something like 7 assists, 4 steals, and 1 or 2 TO. He’s more polished right now than I expected.
by dropstep on Oct 29, 2009 12:57 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
but how well
would he fit in with the wolves style of play and personnel? The thing that flynn provides that makes this team go is getting to the line.
by TheEvilProfessor on Oct 29, 2009 8:29 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not suggesting
that the Wolves should have Curry over Flynn. Right now, Curry is more polished, but was does that get you. Curry, at least on any other tem where he doesn’t have Ellis or another backcourt partner to do his slashing for him will need to learn to be more aggressive. Flynn will need to get a shot and have an offensive skill set that is not dependent on getting fouled or he can get stopped like he did in that last posession. I have no idea who will eventually be better’ or who will fit in better with whatever personnel group the Wolves end up with in the next several years. The woolves could certainly use an outside threat, but would be lost a bit without Flynn’s aggression. Could Curry be paired with Sessions more effectively? I don’t know. Bottom line is that I am just surprised that curry looks as smooth at the point as he does. I would not have had the courage to pull the trigger on him with a top pick if I needed him to be good.
by dropstep on Oct 29, 2009 10:55 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
how has he looked
defensively? offensively they would probably work, but I am not sure about defensively. Plus, there is always the fact that he wants to be a PG and not a SG. Likely at his dad’s suggestion.
by TheEvilProfessor on Oct 29, 2009 11:43 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd need to watch more games
to get a sense of defensive potential. It helps to have good size for the position, and he’s lose that guarding 2s. I’m not sure how he’d do against a more elite PG than Brooks, but he did a good job against a faster man, and he earned those 4 steals with aggressive on ball defense, not by jumping into passing lanes.
I’m not suggesting he’s a good backcourt mate for Sessions, but he can play with Ellis OK, it seems. The whole Flynn/Sessions issue is problematic, and I don’t think it would be solved by swapping wither one for a more verstaile PG or a combo guard. If the wolves had been able to get Sessions before the draft, I think they would have had to do things differently.

First off…I’m a little drunk.
Flynn starting PG…why not???
Telfair and Rhino looked pretty decent last night…FOye was pretty good.
We won with Jefferson scoring 9, good sign.

Johnny Flynn's a Gem
Thanks to the miracle of NBA League Pass’ free preview, I was able to see this one and Minnesota’s comeback was impressive. Johnny Flynn may prove to be the rookie of the year while Kurt Rambis brings a mental toughness that the team has been lacking for years. For the first time in this franchise’s existence, we may see success without KG. Enjoy this season, T-Wolves fans, it could be the foundation of a successful run.

Man Of The Match
Heyyy..has to be Ellington. He played the entire 4th quarter, when the Wolves came up +16. He shot 3-4 in the period, got four boards, and an assist.

What I got from the first half:
A lot of miscommunication and just bad D on give & go, pick ’n pop and pick ’n roll (counted 1 gng and 2 pnr that resulted in easy dunk; 1 pnp in wideopen jumper).
Love how the “guerilla speed” is working. Not pressing all the time but at a momentary lapse of the other time they pick it up.
Didn’t like Wilkins one bit, didn’t take care of the ball.
Brewer was pretty quiet but for one reason or the other he seemed like he would put it together this year.
Love how they are getting fouls called.
What happened to the headband for rookies rule? Did they finally ditch that one?

Adjustments other coaches will make
Easy as pie to see coming:
- “Let’s not double Jefferson automatically until he shows us he’s got his legs.”
- Jonny can drive. Can he shoot? (Keep laying off when Sessions comes in, guys….)
