Hell of a game
Twins, I mean. Now, their streak against the Yankees has to change at some point, doesn’t it?

Seems like death and taxes to me
But man, this made me happy. I love the NBA and Euro football more, but I don’t know if there’s anything as exciting and dramatic as baseball in October, and while I might not have watched a full baseball game all year, I tell you right now:
I LOVE THE TWINS, AND WUUUUUUUUUUUUTTTTT UUUUPPPPPPPPPPP NEW YORK WE CCCCOOOOOOOOMMMMMIINNNNN!!!!!

I was at the Dome for the game.
I’ve never been so exhausted after a sporting event in my life.

How long ‘til we’re watching the Wolves do something like that?

hard to compare
baseball creates an entirely different tension, in part because there is no clock.

The Wolves organization
should just copy the Twins organization.

Before steroids and the big lockout...
…I was a huge baseball fan…I grew up on the ball field at Keeywaydin and later Kent Hrbek field in Bloomington. My 1st favorite player was John Castino and yes, I think Ron Davis is the devil. The Twikies are drawing me back in mainly because Mauer is the type of player you can’t ignore, but I think the Twins have copied the Wolves more than anything else. One and done with one trip to the conference finals is the template here…as is building a lot of nonsense around a small pool of historic talent. I think the Twins get a free pass on this front and I’m not sure the Wolves got enough credit for being “Twins-like” during the KG years.

The difference is
that the “small market” thing actually matters in baseball. The Wolves’ salary cap is the same as everybody else’s…
The Twins are “the little team that could” because they manage to compete despite such a tiny payroll. And there’s something about the way that they always develop these superstars, who then leave for big money somewhere else, and then are replaced by unknowns who develop into superstars.

I view that...
..from a different perspective: They don’t spend a lot by choice and instead of having a Santana/Garza 1-2 punch with a Span, Mauer, Bartlett, Morneau, Cuddyer, Kubel, Hunter, Punto, whoever at 3rd batting order, they’ve stuck their fans with a new stadium that will be used to pay Joe Mauer and host April and (hopefully) October games without a roof. Being the little team that could is a slap in the fans face. It’s a fantastic marketing job by everyone involved with the team but I think it’s BS. It’s especially crappy coming from the Pohlad family…who got its start with Carl foreclosing on family farms during the Great Depression and later following that up by gutting Minneapolis’ street car system so that the city (i.e. taxpayers like you and me) could buy the buses that Carl just happened to own. He later repeated this trick with the new stadium after “warning” the town with contraction (which would have brought him a gigantic contraction check from MLB). 5 years from now the Twins will still be spending a relatively small amount and they’ll still be using AAA players to fill in the gaps around their historic talent…all the while being the Little Team That Almost Could.

Also...
…let’s not forget just how much Papa Glen spent when the Wolves were good. It was about $75 mil in the WCF year and that was around $20 mil over the luxury mark…in a small market with an owner with a similar check book. Somehow, the Twins have turned their owners greed into an effective marketing strategy. Now that’s a little something that could.
