Phoenix: Home of the YMCA White Guy Move (AKA Game Thread #3)
Minnesota Timberwolves at Phoenix Suns, Nov 1, 2009 7:00 PM CST

It's Steve Nash time folks. Hopefully some of his facilitation skills rub off on Jonny Flynn on the first road trip of the year. Jonny can put the ball in the bucket but the whole passing thing is another question altogether.
The Suns are 2-0 and they have been entertaining in each contest. Here's hoping that trend continues tonight. Here are your links for the night:
We especially recommend that you check out the Bright Side of the Sun. Mui Bueno.

Here's the calculation
Take the number of minutes Stewie plays and subtract 2.5 to get the range of shots he’ll take (so if he plays 15 minutes, he’ll attempt 12-13 shots). To determine how much Amare will score, add 10 points to Stewie’s point total.

Basically that Kahn knew the minute we took Rubio that there was a good chance he wouldn’t be here this year. He said “Rubio for the future, Jonny for right now”, and it showed the clip where he told the staff to tell everyone that we weren’t trading either of them.
Then he named James Johnson as the guy the wait on for the #18 pick, otherwise trade it.

This is kind of irritating to me. Why trot out that BS that they would play together like Jordan and Paxson then? Why not just tell us that?
“Rubio won’t come this year. Jonny will be our point guard, and in two years, we will make a decision on which to keep and trade the other.”
Boom. No summer of annoying Rubio coverage, and the national media would have understood it much better. I bet Kahn would’ve been praised for his long-term patient vision, rather than called a kook.
by LoveTo on Nov 1, 2009 8:22 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Well he *did* say they'd play together...
On the video, he initially basically said, “Rubio’s available and I never thought he would be… we’re taking him, understanding the buyout might be a problem…. and taking Jonny Flynn is not a knock on him…they can play together.”
I definitely did not get “Rubio for the future, Flynn for now” from that segment.

He’s bitter because he didn’t get considered for the GM job. Before they drafted Rubio, he wrote something about how he didn’t want the job anymore, because they “lied” publicly about the number of e-mails sent to the Wolves supporting him.
You tell ’em, Bill… Embarrassing. Very petulant for a professional sports writer.
by LoveTo on Nov 1, 2009 8:37 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Oh come on.
No offense, but the GM thing was a joke the entire time. 100% joke. The joke was we were so messed up he might actually get the job, which would be the most absurd thing ever, but still if he acted serious about it people would start to take it seriously, thereby revealing how messed up we were.
All right, brain. You don't like me and I don't like you, but let's just do this and I can get back to killing you with beer.

I'm not so sure.
This was like the third team he’s campaigned to be the GM for, always with the same logic (“What is Team X going to do to make themselves relevant?” Well, maybe… get good?)
He’s written that it’s his dream to be a GM someday. We may disagree, but I think the guy’s got such an ego that he really thinks he should get a shot at it, and now of course he can act like it was all a joke as he gets his revenge by criticizing Kahn to people who don’t know better.
Either that, or he’s honestly dumb enough to believe all the things he says about Rubio and Flynn…
by LoveTo on Nov 1, 2009 8:46 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
i thought the gm thing...
..was a joke at first but near the end i moved closer to thinking he believes he could do it…which is crazy. it’s a funny joke, but i think he took it seriously near the end.

I think it was more like....
..it was taking so long it was just starting to get absurd, so why the hell not? But, at its core the joke is the same – we can’t do anything right, so much so a guy who couldn’t run a DivIII team is being taken seriously by the fans. I am sure he got tons of email, which only feeds into it. But at the core, the joke is the same – we were SO messed up our fans were begging for him. Joke is on us and the more complaints we send his way about how wrong he is the more he prods. It keeps us reading and involved. And that is his job.
At least that was my take.

His job is to entertain
He may want to be a GM, so do I. Unfortunately, he’s a writer. Like every national guy, they make a case for something, they make their take, and trot it out over and over becuase they are 1) expected to entertain, 2) they are expected to have an opinion about EVERYTHING and thus can’t spend 1/10th the time you and I have thinking about it. Just the way it works. And, you’ll notice him always prodding Lakers just to laugh at all the outraged emails he gets. Same thing.
All right, brain. You don't like me and I don't like you, but let's just do this and I can get back to killing you with beer.

Point taken on the "entertainer" thing
I get that B.S. is really a sports “personality”…but I don’t think his criticism of the Wolves/Kahn and the Rubio situation is analogous to his joyful hatred of the Lakers. He says all the time how much he respects Kobe and the Lakers but, as a sports fan in general and a Celtic fan in particular, he just loves to hate the team and make them a villian.
The Wolves, on the other hand, are an easy target b/c they’ve been hapless and squandered KG’s prime…
He criticizes the Lakers because they’re the Lakers. He uses his bit about the Wolves and Rubio as proof that the club and FO are still dysfunctional f-ups.
by PDGirl on Nov 1, 2009 8:58 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe
But we haven’t proven much yet. He does love Big Al, he gushes over Love, he said Sessions would be a steal for somebody, and if Flynn gets some rookie hype (and we win a few games). He’ll come around. He loves the Thunder and they stink about as much.

When Channing Frye drops
6 threes on you, it probably isn’t your night.
by Eric in Madison on Nov 1, 2009 8:49 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
He was 6-7 in Phoenix’s last game.
He’s always had the ability. The Knicks and Blazers just never utilized it.
by Oceanary on Nov 1, 2009 8:53 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Still absurd though
Nobody has the ability to go 6 for 7 then 6 for 10 on a consistent basis. If we catch him on his next 1 for 8 it’s a different game, obviosuly. Dude is just a buzz saw right now. Killing me.
All right, brain. You don't like me and I don't like you, but let's just do this and I can get back to killing you with beer.

Al is leading us in assists right now
Nice to see his passing game taking shape, but I’m concerned that Flynn and Sessions aren’t facilitating so far this year. Nash has almost double the assists as Jonny and Ramon combined.
by Oceanary on Nov 1, 2009 8:59 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I think the triangle Al to kick it out some
he actually should have more assists
by Rascal Flatts on Nov 1, 2009 9:00 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
You would think one of our point guards would manage more assists than the center though...
Wouldn’t you? I mean, no one has more than 3 assists in ay game we’ve played this year so far.

but we're scoring
so is that a bad thing?
by TMiss on Nov 1, 2009 9:04 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Normally yes,
but the triangle often means the guy on the elbow delivers the last pass prior to a shot
by Rascal Flatts on Nov 1, 2009 9:09 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
But that formula usually requires a strong distributing wing player
Scottie Pippen, Kobe, Ron Artest, etc.

51 assists on 106 baskets
Not too bad. We just are hitting shots, layups, etc. Can’t assist a miss

7 point game?
I’ll give them credit for that even in a loss. I really like this team (compared to last year’s).

This team is far and away more athletic than last year’s. Faster, more aggressive, more fun to watch. Probably not much better, though.

It’s not so much that he doesn’t pass the ball, he just slows us down so much

It was
I’d say 3 for 3 in terms of effort. Of course, it’s still early! In mid-December when we’ve won only 5 games or so, it may be tough to muster the energy to go out and compete.

Flynn is just shooting a lot at times when he should be looking to create a passing opportunity
He did the same thing against Cleavland.

I'm hoping to see a lot more of Hollins tomorrow
Put him in the starting lineup opposite of Camby. Bench Stewie and his no-defense game.

Looking over the team stats...
we outplayed the Suns in everything but blocks and, here’s no surprise, shooting %. We played a good game tonight, but when your opponent drops 14 3pters on you (6 by Frye?? Seriously???), what can you do? Gomes played a damn good game, which leads me to believe that he will be gone by the trade deadline. Big Oily needs to go. Flynn is a rook and needs time to learn the pro game. Big Al needs his legs back (and may not be a very good fit with this offense). Can’t wait for K-Love to return. Having said all that (probably too much, huh?), I agree with LoveTo, TMiss and Oceanary – this team is a lot more fun to watch.
by SoDakHmr on Nov 1, 2009 10:21 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Fun game tonight. About what you’d expect from a young team learning a new system and new players. It was great to watch at times, but also terrible at times, and disjointed for the rest. The Wolves had to settle for plenty of crap shots where no one could create anything within the flow of the offense, and no one was really willing to step up and be the man, as well as times (too many times) when Al decided he’d step up. On the flip side, there were times when things were clicking and we were knocking down our shots, and we keyed our offense off our ability to create turnovers and scrap on D and on the boards, something that seems to be becoming a trait for these guys. Flynn and Sessions got some burn together, and from what I recall things ran pretty well for that time.
That said, it’s hard not to watch and wonder a few things:
1. Will Al learn to embrace ball movement? He can’t keep slowing down plays that often and that early in the clock. If he’s going to miss easy passes, he needs to cut down on the play kiling 1 on 1’s. Play within the offense and go 1 on 1 when the play breaks down or he’s got an easy matchup. I’m not going to call for his head without seeing how he looks with his legs back, but watching him out there has kind of sewn the seed of doubt in my mind how well he fits where this team is going.
2. How good would this team look with a legit big wing player who could consistently do something with the ball after catching it that doesn’t involve dribbling off his feet or throwing a layup 2 feet above the square. Brewer is looking OK, but we still need a big, more consistent shot-creator out there, preferably one who can hit from midrange and play D. I plan on watching as much Evan Turner as possible next year.
When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead. True story.

On the good side of the ledger...
..we’re 3rd in the league so far in Offensive Rebound Rate, and 6th in the league in Turnover Ratio. This without Love and with 2 rookie guards getting solid minutes.
