Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

Prowling the NBA: Nov 10

Hey everyone. I have talked to Stop-n-Pop and we have decided to try out a weekly "Around the NBA" FanPost feature here on Canis Hoopus, a mixture of headlining news, short analysis of various games and teams, news from other teams that might directly affect the Wolves, and random observations to keep everyone up to date on what's going on around the league.

Normally this will be done on the weekends, but since the season is already well under way, I figure we might as well get going now.

Lets start with the most interesting news, which, of course is...

Star-divide

After just two weeks and three games with his new team, Allen Iverson has left the Memphis Grizzlies:

And it doesn't appear he's coming back. The team line is that Iverson has a family problem to deal with, terming the absence as a "personal matter", but that seems highly unlikely give what happened last year between AI and the Pistons. Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said AI's leave is "indefinite", and no one on the team seems to know any more than that. When asked, Center Marc Gasol simply said "we don't know any more about this than you guys. All I know is he's gone".

After just his first game with the Grizzlies, Iverson publicly balked at his bench role, ultimately stating that a "player of my resume" should be in the starting lineup. Sounds like deja vu from last year.

ESPN writer Chad Ford made calls around the league, and reported that a member of the Grizzlies' coaching staff told him that Iverson and Memphis owner Michael Heisley agreed to part ways, thus terminating Iverson's career with the Grizzlies.

But it appears Iverson, in doing this, has terminated his entire NBA career. Said one GM to Ford: "I can't imagine anyone wanting him at this point. Struggling teams now know he's going to be a distraction. Contending teams have to live with the fact that Iverson puts himself above the team. Even the Clippers backed away from him this summer and Donald Sterling will do anything to sell tickets. I'm still not sure what the Grizzlies were thinking."

Another simply stated: "He's finished in the NBA. He can go hang out with Stephon Marbury."

There's a lot more to this story that I've put up here, so ask if you have further questions...

Also, speaking of problems with the Grizzlies...

Rudy Gay and OJ Mayo are reportedly feuding:

This is something that could very directly affect the Wolves. Both the local media and Memphis fans I've spoken to say that Mayo and Gay are having "alpha male" problems and fairly despise each other at this point.

Memphis fans say that this has been brewing since the trade deadline last year and escalated all summer. It openly spilled out earlier this season during a loss to Denver, when OJ started screaming at the team to play better defense. Rudy took exception to this, and the two got into a fight on the court and had to be separated by Hollins.

I asked Memphis fans on the Gamefaqs NBA board if this meant Gay might potentially be available at the trade deadline, where he would only cost the sum of his rookie contract, and got interesting responses.

Said one: "I don't think Gay's game compliments OJ's at all, but that's a different issue. The two hate each other, and now everyone knows it. The way I see it, OJ is the closest thing we have to a franchise player right now, so if one of them has to go, it's Rudy."

So would he be available?

"We wouldn't want to trade him midseason for obvious reasons. But if this thing between him and Mayo keeps escalating, we won't have a choice."

Acquiring Rudy Gay now would bee a boon in dozens of ways for the Wolves. We obviously need a shooter and scorer on the wings. We get to test drive how he fits before making a long term commitment to him. He likely translates into a handful of wins just by his presence.

What do you guys think?

Want to know who else has some big problems?

The Golden State Warriors are buried in drama over Stephen Jackson's trade demand:

He wants out of Golden State. Understandable. Now it's being reported that his teammates want him out too.

But the drama got a shocking new actor last week: Jackson's agent, Mark Stevens. In a scathing phone interview with ESPN's Chris Broussard, Stevens absolutely shredded Warrior's coach Don Nelson.

"No one trusts Don Nelson. When Nelson was in Milwaukee, Wayne Embry trusted him and brought him in, and he betrayed Embry. In Dallas, Mark Cuban took damn good care of him and his son, and he betrayed Cuban."

"In Golden State, Chris Mullin hired him and trusted him, and Nelson backstabbed him by reaching out to president Robert Rowell and blaming Mullin for everything that was going wrong with the Warriors."

"I'm disgusted with the quality of Nelson's coaching and with the lack of trust his players have in him. Nelson is the winningest coach in NBA history to never have coached in the NBA Finals, let alone won a championship. Yet he keeps getting jobs despite being 69 years old."

The Cavs, Bobcats, and Hornets are all said to be interested in acquiring Captain Jack. But the Warriors maintain that they're waiting for the right deal. Question is, how much of this can they stomach before they decide to cut their losses?

Moving on...

The San Antonio Spurs don't looks like contenders this year:

It's something I noticed in their game last week against the Blazers. Their defense isn't at a championship level, and worse yet, doesn't appear to have the potential to get there by March. Antonio McDyess is a shell of what he was just last year in Detroit, Richard Jefferson has played unispired basketball thus far, and Tim Duncan is really starting to show his age.

A fan I spoke with said "Tim's only playing like a real NBA player these days when we get down by a ton or he's mad at the refs."

Without Duncan, the Spurs have about as much interior defense as the Wolves. Bonner is essentially a 6'10" shooting guard, and Blair, for all his unbelievable rebounding ability, has shotblocking and help defense ability equivalent to Craig Smith. The Spurs are, shockingly, undersized this year in a bad way, and Popavich has frequently been resorting to a small ball lineup.

San Antonio has a reputation for starting slow and picking it up on their annual "Rodeo Roadtrip" in January. But with a team this old and unmotivated, one wonders if the Spurs will have that second gear this season.

Props to them on their win against Toronto, though:

Last night the Spurs trotted out a fearsome starting lineup of Jefferson, Finley, George Hill, Keith Bogans, and Theo Ratliff. And won. Yes, they beat the Raptors 131-124 behind 36 points from Manu Ginobili, who seems to have found his midseason form early after an injury-riddled 08-09 campaign and a summer spent off the court.

And speaking of Manu...

Ginobili killed a bat. During a game. With his bare hands:

No lie. Check out the video.

This has, of course spawned all sorts of jokes. BatManu. Manu plays Batsketball. Manu catch bat with bare hands can accomplish anything.

Still waiting for one to top Obi-wan Ginobli though.

Now, for something interesting...

Let's do a statistical comparison of Chris Paul and Chris Duhon:

Paul - 26ppg, 3.6rpg, 10apg on 63% shooting, 68% from three

Duhon - 7ppg, 3rpg, 6.6apg on 25% shooting, 23% from three

Catch that? Paul is shooting a sizzling 63%, while Duhon is on pace to overtake Randy Foye as arguably the most inefficient guard in NBA history. I'm not sure which is more stunning...how incredibly good CP3 has been, or how incredibly bad Duhon has been.

For another interesting comparison, let's do Elton Brand and Marresse Speights:

Brand:
28 mpg
10.2 ppg
6.2 rpg
0.83 bpg
Current salary: $14,858,472

Speights:
22 mpg
13.5 ppg
6.5 rpg
1.3 bpg
Current salary: $1,658,280

It would seem the Sixers wasted $15 million, wouldn't it? Sixers fans I've talked to steadily maintain Brand was a good decision, but their agruments as to why seem halfhearted at best.

Now on to LeBron...

LeBron James threw feul on the fire of speculation this week during his one visit to MSG:

James was quoted as saying he'd gladly accept less than a maximum deal to increase the chances of winning a title, which the New York media instantly took as LeBron is headed to New York. The Knicks' initial plan of clearing enough cap space for two max signings has been torpedoed by the economy, which will bring the cap down $10 million for President Walsh's initial calculations two years ago.

The fallout between James and Cleavland would be staggering if he voluntarily walked away from his hometown. But he's playing this close to the vest, because he knows it will force everyone else to play with their cards face up.

And finally...

Tracy McGrady is not being traded to the Wolves:

Earlier this week, a report was released with McGrady saying he was targeting a return date of November 18th against Minnesota. Some Wolves fans misinterpreted that as McGrady is going to BE a Timberwolf.

False.

Well, that's about it for this week.

I'll probably skip out on this weekend's update unless something incredibly interesting breaks in the next 4 days. Otherwise, tune in each weekend to catch up on the odds and ends of the NBA.

re: Rudy Gay

Why do so many people feel that Rudy Gay would all of a sudden become an important player if he winds up here when he has so little impact on his current team? OJ Mayo has moved in and dislodged Gay, Conley, and AI. I guess Mayo must be truly awe-inspiring.

by ogishkemuncie on Nov 10, 2009 10:12 PM CST reply actions

You kind of answered your own question

O.J. Mayo, Allen Iverson, Zach Randolph, Lionel Hollins… They aren’t exactly the new San Antonio Spurs over there. A change of scenery, a more well-defined role, and a better team atmosphere are all things that could have a majorly positive effect on Gay’s performance.

Also, despite the controversy, Gay is putting up great numbers so far this season. He’s massively increased his 3PFG%, increased his overall FG%, RPG, and cut down on turnovers.

In terms of age, position, and playing style, he’s a perfect fit. The only thing he lacks is in overall skill level compared to James, Wade, etc. But if we can’t get them, he’s our best option.

For my own sanity

Can I refuse to believe that Gay is the best we can do?

I agree

Memphis is awful, if they are willing to trade Gay to keep Mayo happy it is a massive red flag for me. With all the assets the Wolves have, it would seem better to use them for something more than a gamble on someone’s attitude. Either Gay or Mayo is an attitude problem, why take the risk of acquiring the wrong one?

by Rumblebee on Nov 11, 2009 6:37 PM CST up reply actions

I have wanted for a long time

The only problem i can see with this is that, we have Al Jefferson, Kevin Love, Jonny Flynn, and next years first round pick. These are players just like OJ, and AI, and Randolph, and Gasol. I wonder if he might have the same problems with Al Jefferson that he is having with OJ MAyo.
Otherwise, i think he would be an amazingpickup for this young team. He is such an amazing finisher, i wouldlove to see him in one of our fastbreaks with Jonny Flynn orchestrating. He would be just the kind of player we need. I can already imagine a starting lineup of, Jonny Flynn, Corey Brewer, Rudy Gay, Al JEfferson, ??Cole Aldrich?? or Kevin Love, there is on;y one way to describe that, dominent.

About Gay and Mayo:

I actually heard they were working out together and starting to get along this summer… I guess that’s the end of that rumor.

I’d love to test-drive him, but not for anything too expensive. I don’t even think I would give up Brewer for Gay right now considering we would lose Gay if we didnt pay him AT LEAST $10M next year. It better be a damn good test drive to rent Gay while trading away our only bright spot.

by Mplax on Nov 11, 2009 12:30 AM CST reply actions

Brewer for Gay?

In a second, but even Memphis isn’t that ignorant. Brewer = bright spot? Brewer is shooting under 37% and is still making dumb offensive decisions. Why are folks still waiting for the lightbulb to come on?

If Memphis is forced to trade Gay, they’re going to get better offers than Brewer.

by Blond Ricky on Nov 12, 2009 7:24 AM CST up reply actions

He is shooting terribly right now

mostly as an effect of shooting 15-20 shots per in his first few games. Which I am pretty sure he was told to do rather than just decided to jack them up (and somehow maintain his playing time).
He has been terrific defensively and has had one of the if not the best +/- on our team so far. He is everywhere on defense. That is more than can be said of anyone else on our team. Right now I would honestly prefer 5 Brewers on my team than 5 Al Jeffersons… and definitely more than 5 Rudy Gays for that matter. Rudy Gay would be a nice piece if we could sign him for about 7-8M next year, but that’s not gonna happen. Without a doubt, someone will overpay him and make the trade for Brewer not worth the “season test-drive.”

by Mplax on Nov 12, 2009 3:04 PM CST up reply actions

The Spurs don't look great, that's for sure.

Old and slow, across the board.

I’d love to poach Gay. Would they be interested in Stewie Griffin?

The end of the line for the Spurs

may have come a year earlier than they hoped. Good news for the Wolves unless they can turn their salaries into decent long term contracts next summer (if anyone can do it, it would be the Spurs).

Manu did NOT Kill the Bat

He merely captured it. He turned it over to someone, who let it go. And since the bat was not available for rabies testing, having flown away, Manu had to get rabies shots.

Getting Gay

I would love to get Gay on the team, no homo, but what do u think we would have to give up to get him, i wouldn’t mind giving up Love for him, honestly do we need to have our 2 best players play the same position? I would much rather have Al as the starter PF and in the meenwhile start Hollins at C and then after this year draft Alabi and start him at C to help Al out in post D. Also i wouldn’t mind giving Gay a contract that gave him $10 mil a year, lets be honest none of the big name free agents are gona want to play for the T-Wolves and the Wolves are gona have a lot of money to spend.

by JacobA on Nov 11, 2009 11:30 AM CST reply actions

We, as Wolves fans,

need to get over the idea that “Noone wants to come here as a FA to play.” Why not?? What is so terrible about the Twin Cities. It isn’t a foriegn city, it isn’t in the middle of nowhere and people really do like to play here. The Wolves problem when KG was here was two fold: He made a ton of money and the FO was incompetent.

Oceanary – very good stuff. I think it’s a keeper spot. Thanks!!

Yeah

The more I think about it, the more I realize that the reason we couldn’t attract a big name here in the past was because we HAD a big name here and that big name just happened to have a lock-out inducing contract.

by Mplax on Nov 11, 2009 11:53 AM CST up reply actions

That and the management

of the team and how it was run was less than ideal from a FA’s perspective.

by TheEvilProfessor on Nov 11, 2009 12:22 PM CST up reply actions

Who do u think we gona sign then

I really can’t c us signing some one better then Gay in the offseason, of the FA that i think are better then Gay are of Course Lebron, Wade, Bosh, Amare, Joe Johnson, and a couple of other like Dirk, Yao, and Pierce, but i would probably rather have Gay cause of age. For LeBron and Wade i have heard nothing of them coming to the Wolves, Bosh and Amare would be really nice but once again would be making our 2 best players PF’s, i would really like to get Joe Johnson tho, i think a starting lineup of PG Flynn SG Joe Johnson SF Brewer PF Jefferson C Alabi (Love coming off bench as backup big man) would make us contenders, but i only slightly like Joe better then Gay with Gay being i think like 5 years younger, but would rather go the Joe Johnson route since we would keep Love, or better we could get both of them!

by JacobA on Nov 11, 2009 12:37 PM CST up reply actions

Trading Love for Gay is probably not a good idea.

We’ve got Love locked in for two more (I think) seasons at a reasonable salary, whereas Gay will present us the options of losing him or overpaying him immediately at the end of this season.

by Princely Frank on Nov 11, 2009 12:20 PM CST up reply actions

It’s a terrible idea. Love is both better and cheaper..

Don't trade Love for Gay....no way!

Love brings intangibles this team will need to be a contender, only trade him if he is part of a package for a superstar.

by Rumblebee on Nov 11, 2009 6:43 PM CST up reply actions

Besides, if you trade Kevin for Rudy

then you can’t trot out Gay-Love as your starting forwards.

I really really really really hope

You guys don’t end up with the “honor” of paying Rudy Gay 10+ million a year…

He isn’t the answer. Ballhogs with overly high usage rates who never pass the ball and play zero defense don’t suddenly become wings who can help a good team. He scores okay, but traditionally very inefficiently and he does NOTHING else to help a team.

Scoring is cheap, I really hope you don’t blow the cap space on a player like him. He’ll make things worse.

Mortimer

I know Love will have long term defensive limitation, but his amazing rebounding and passing ability doesn’t grow on trees.

I am a bigger fan

of trying to get someone like Evan Turner in the Draft. Having a playmaker like him to pair with Flynn is a lot of playmaking ability on the perimeter to go with Jefferson inside. And in the triangle he should be able to showcase his passing skills as well.

by TheEvilProfessor on Nov 11, 2009 1:37 PM CST up reply actions

Flynn + Turner

May be the most turnover prone backcourt in the league. Evan Turner does make some wow plays out there, but if you caught more than a handful of games, you’d understand this is a glaring weakness in his game. In an offense like the triangle which based on what we’ve seen so far, is going to demand our wings to handle and pass, this is a concern.

That being said, Turner has shown himself to be a good passer and if he can show improvement this season in turnovers, I could be on board.

by Ebomb on Nov 11, 2009 2:39 PM CST up reply actions

The thing about Turner is that his usage rate is sky high. IIRC, unless I’m reading DX’s stats wrong it was higher last year than Roy’s was in any of his 4 years. In other words, he has to carry an immense offensive burden for his team, so it only makes sense that his TO rate is going to be high. The fact that he still manages a positive A/TO ratio is fairly impressive. In my opinion it’s not a huge worry given that he does just about everything else you could ask from a wing – get to the line, rebound like crazy, play the passing lanes while still playing good fundamental D etc. Just something to consider.

When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead. True story.

by Xand1 on Nov 11, 2009 2:54 PM CST up reply actions

And I think his turnover rate is more comparable to

a PG, because that is what he is often asked to play

by Mplax on Nov 11, 2009 2:58 PM CST up reply actions

yeah

because they have no one else. I want to see how he does against the follow Gopher perimeter D:

Nolen, Williams and Johnson.

If they don’t make him look foolish, then the TO questions are overblown. Those three just flat out can ball defensively. Creepy good.

by TheEvilProfessor on Nov 11, 2009 3:29 PM CST up reply actions

When do they play?

If you know. Also, do you have any idea when they play the Badgers?

by TheEvilProfessor on Nov 11, 2009 4:43 PM CST up reply actions

So...

Am i the only one who thinks having there 2 best players being PF’s is bad, don’t get me wrong Love is a good player but i really think we should trade him, Al Jefferson can not play C and that is what we are forcing him to do. I want a true C! Come on Alabi!!! I wouldn’t mind signing Tyson Chandler next year to for his post D and platoon him and Alabi at Center.

by JacobA on Nov 11, 2009 4:09 PM CST reply actions

Just to clarify

Big Al is a C in a PF body. He is an offensive C who can’t/doesn’t want to play D. Quick test to see if someone is a PF…can they play the pnr and hit a 3? If yes…then PF, if not…then no.

by TheEvilProfessor on Nov 11, 2009 4:46 PM CST up reply actions

I agree about Jefferson’s game, but the ability to hit a trey is NOT a requirement for a PF.

KG: .283 career 3pt%
Elton Brand: .154
Bosh: .316
Pau: .234
Boozer: .111

These guys all fail your test, meaning we need a new test.

by losDelFuego on Nov 11, 2009 5:40 PM CST up reply actions

Three point range isn't as important as having a midrange game

Either one of the two frontcourt players has to be able to bring it out to roughly 15 feet or it gets really crowded in the paint very quickly. Two examples to illustrate this: the Lakers frontcourt tandem and Cleveland’s original starting frontcourt.

The Lakers start Gasol and Bynum, arguably the league’s best frontcourt, and Bynum occupies the low block with his increasingly diverse post game and Gasol is in the high post because he can go out to 20 feet, beat his man off the dribble, and set up cutters and shooters. Part of this is how the triangle is styled, but it does illustrate an important point involving spacing. Gasol is probably among the best post players in the game, but if he and Bynum were trading spots on the block (which could work in theory because Bynum can also hit the 10-15 jumper but isn’t nearly as good in setting up people) every other possession, it wouldn’t nearly be as effective.

Conversely, Cleveland started Shaq and Varajeo to start the season, and obviously, Shaq is going to be on the block to overpower opposing centers with his post game. Varajeo has somewhat of a midrange game, but it’s definitely not consistent, and he’s more of an energy guy in getting putbacks, nabbing offensive rebounds, and moving off screen rolls, so when Cleveland is on offense, it’s much easier for the defense to collapse the paint and still get out to perimeter players because they don’t have to respect his range, and it makes it difficult to for Shaq to get proper post position and for perimeter players to make the entry pass. It’s why Brown tried a Big Z-Shaq frontcourt, but that has big defensive liabilities, especially with the pick-and-roll.

As far as Minny is concerned, Love is a great match for Jefferson on the offense end because he can stretch the floor with his shooting (well, ideally; he didn’t show it last year, but he had range in college, so it should come up eventually as his career progresses) while Jefferson occupies the post. The only long-term issue is on the defensive end because Jefferson is undersized and both aren’t particularly mobile, so they get hit hard on pick-and-rolls and perimeter coverage.

Oh, and in response to the nut who wants to trade Love, the guy posted a 18.39 PER as a rookie, leading all rookies in that efficiency rating, and among all players, he posted the highest rebound rate in the league, the highest offensive rebound rate, and the second highest defensive rebound rate. You don’t trade away that kind of talent, especially not for Rudy Gay, who doesn’t pass or play defense; the former is a huge liability in the triangle and the latter doesn’t endear him to anyone. Minny’s biggest need right now is on the wings, but that’s where the draft and free agency next year come into play.

Cap Space is a great asset to have

until you use it to sign Elton Brand! Don’t forget, if my memory is correct the Wolves also got one of their extra #1 picks from Philly so they could clear cap space for Brand!

Kahn, please do better than an Elton Brand move when the time comes to make the big move.

by Rumblebee on Nov 11, 2009 6:47 PM CST reply actions

To be fair to Philly

The thing they were missing for years was a legitimate post threat. In his prime, Brand definitely was an awesome force in the post. No one predicted how far he’d fall due to his injury. If he still was the same player he was with the Clippers, then they’d probably be a top four or five team in the East with all the talent they have.

The Allen Iverson drama stuns me

I normally side with the team in these issues because players are able to use the law of supply and demand against the owners, but in this case the Grizzlies were just fools. They didn’t need Iverson, and overpaid for what he now brings to the table.
Anyone surprised by what is happening raise your hands, anyone?

Perhaps my earlier post regarding Rudy Gay/Mayo is wrong. If Memphis was dumb enough to bring in Iverson, maybe they are favoring Mayo when Gay is the guy they should be keeping?

Memphis

The Grizzlies seem like the logical trading partner for the Wolves. We could really use Mayo or Gay, and they could really do without Mayo or Gay.

The perception is that Kahn loves Flynn to death, and won’t be in any hurry to trade him. But, I think what’s more clear is that Kahn is a pretty cold dealer of personnel, and if OJ Mayo could be had, he’ll part ways with his best friend to get him.

In any case, we need a scoring wing, and the Grizzlies have one too many of them.
