Martin for Jefferson

As we talk about our future (and avoid the present), one of the most common recommendations is that we make a trade for a quality wing, with Kevin Martin being a typical example. For a long time I had been a proponent of trading some collection of expiring contracts/Pekovic for Kevin Martin, but with the news that Sacramento recently considered trading Kenny Thomas's expiring contract for Samuel Dalembert (and his AWFUL contract), the prospect of us acquiring Kevin Martin for a bucket of expiring's seems far less likely.

That being said, Tyreke Evans has looked fantastic ever since Kevin Martin's injury forced him to slide over to the 2. So the possibility that Kevin Martin is on the trading block definitely still exists. So my question is this...

If the best deal we could possibly get with the Kings was Kevin Martin and Kenny Thomas for Al Jefferson and Brian Cardinal. Would you do the trade?

I ran a version of this trade this summer...

And I had the readers of this blog and Sactown blog ‘grade the trade’ – here were the results -

BTW – the results of the Sac town trade are in (Jefferson and Flynn for Martin and Hawes)

T-wolf fans rejected the trade at a 54-32 clip. Sactown fans liked the trade at an inverse rate of 53-33.

At the time, Hawes was heavily dismissed by Wolves fans and no one even cared that Flynn was in the trade. That part might change if proposed again.

At this point, while I advocate trading AlJeff, I wouldn’t do the trade.

Interesting

So neither side wanted to do the deal? Or did you mean that Sactown would do the deal?

I guess I don’t actually know what you could get for Jefferson, I kind of feel like we as T-wolves overvalue him compared to the rest of the league.

Let me clarify

Wolves fans rejected the trade – 32% for, 54% against.
Sactown fans liked the trade – 53% for, 33% against.

Not interested

It’s at best a lateral move and makes rebounding an even bigger problem. I don’t see why the Kings would do this, anyway, with Jason Thompson playing well.

According to ESPN's trade machine...

Doing this trade would increase our projected win’s by 7. For whatever that’s worth.

by Blakeley on Nov 20, 2009 2:19 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Meh....

Not really doing anything for me. Al’s recent flashes of playing within the offense combined with his rebounding offset whatever you get from the fragile Martin. I’d like to believe that, for the price, we can do better. What good is trading for a guy who can’t be counted on for a full season worth of games?

I think I'd do it

But I like Martin more than just about anyone else does. It also adds a couple million in cap space next summer.

by Eric in Madison on Nov 20, 2009 3:08 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Skilled bigs vs. Skilled wings

To me both are injury prone (Al has missed double-digit games in every season but one I believe) and both bring their own set of strengths and weaknesses that sort of cancel each other out. So it comes down to the supply of skilled bigs vs. skilled wings and on that count the scale tips in favor of Al Jefferson. I wouldn’t do it.

by Rascal Flatts on Nov 20, 2009 3:25 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely

Twolves don’t seem to think AlJeff is a true center and they need wings more than an undersized center.

Hollins has been starting at 5 and when Love comes back, I think Martin improves this year’s team more than Al. This gives them a clean slate to work with at the 5 and solves a need on the wing. Plus it does free up $2-3 million in caproom next year.

Get Martin at 2, then get Rudy Gay at 3, and draft athletic 4-5 like Derrick Favors, Ed Davis, or get a vet that can defend the rim/rebound, and draft Evan Turner to supplement the wings

I'm Indifferent

I’d prefer Martin to Jefferson. This team needs shooters in a bad, bad way. This is a lot of the root of their offensive problems.

The problem is that finding production at SG is a lot easier than at the 5. So how we’d fill the center spot (Hollins isn’t the answer) would also depend on my thoughts.

I’m no fan of Spencer Hawes although I’m not nuts about Jonny Flynn either. I like Sessions and Rubio more in the long-term although Flynn has vastly more upside than Hawes.

So all things considered I’d probably lean no.

Rejected

It’s not a bad trade idea, but I wouldn’t take it for three reasons.

1) Jefferson’s one major injury is less of a concern for me than Martin’s chronic nagging ones. As long as Jefferson can come back, he wins big there.

2) Martin’s team seems to be playing better without him, whereas we have always played worse without Al.

3) Martin is 23 months older, a difference which is further amplified by their playing styles. It’s a common occurrence for young wings who draw a lot of fouls by going to the hoop to adapt their style to be lower impact as they age. Jason Richardson, Vince Carter, even Michael Jordan are examples. If Martin goes that route, he won’t be the hyper efficient scorer he is now. On the other hand, I could easily see Al torching inferior big men well into his thirties.

My chance that Al could be an effective star player for up to twice as long as Martin is the biggest reason I’d rather keep him.

If Martin had an easier time staying healthy

I’d consider it. But he’s got a glass jaw, so I wouldn’t bother.

by museum on Nov 20, 2009 8:39 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I don't do it

With all the assets the Wolves have and where they will be drafting the next couple of years, they need to get an All-Star caliber player instead of Martin.

by Rumblebee on Nov 21, 2009 12:57 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Wings

Are there any wings better then Martin that the wolves could get in a swap for Jefferson? I’m hard pressed to think of any.

by Blakeley on Nov 21, 2009 6:28 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Michael Redd

but he’s even more injury prone than Martin. Milwaukee might consider it, they have been winning without him while Jennings has been going nuts.

by easeus on Nov 22, 2009 12:27 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

might consider it?

they would take that deal in a hearbeat

by bheidge on Nov 22, 2009 6:26 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah I don't want Michael Redd

Going to school in Wisconsin, I get to hear a few complaints about him from Bucks fans.

by Mplax on Nov 22, 2009 7:04 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't do it

What about Jefferson for Gay, Young, Thabeet and filler. Saves us $5mil for next year as well. If there is a team that can give Thabeet minutes then it would be us with Jefferson gone.

by easeus on Nov 22, 2009 12:52 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Jefferson and Randolph are the same player...

why would they want that?

...and that's a good thing

by In Walks Rudy on Nov 22, 2009 7:53 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Gives them a great big man combo

of Z-Bo, Al and Marc Gasol. That way you can switch Al between PF and C depending on who he is on the floor with

by easeus on Nov 23, 2009 4:59 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Love

Id much rather trade Love then Big Al, I know Big Al isn’t a great defender but we are making him play C when he is clearly a PF, i think we need a good Defensive C along with a good wing, what do u think about Iggy and Samy D for Flynn, Kevin Love, and maybe 1 of our first round picks. Or maybe Flynn and Love for Bayless or Steve Blake, Martel Webster, and Przbilla, just throwing stuff out there. Also yes i know Iggy isn’t that good of a 3 point shooter and starting Sessions, Iggy, and Brewers would probably be the worst shooting 1-2-3 ever, but probably one of the best defensively, maybe we could work Korver in the deal to =)

by JacobA on Nov 23, 2009 4:25 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Kapono

my bad Kapono not Korver, same difference

by JacobA on Nov 23, 2009 4:34 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yuck

I wouldn’t give up Flynn AND Love for Przybilla and Bayless only looks good if you talk to Blazer fans who only say that to convince themselves.
