The Hoopus completely-serious-no-cynicism-what-we're-thankful-for-about-the-Wolves post

OK, this can be the happy thread. If you want the bitchy one, please scroll down to the game wrap and let it all out.
This post is to list the things that are going right with the franchise. Consider it being done with the Thanksgiving spirit.
I'm most thankful that Corey Brewer finally looks like an NBA rotation player. He looks like the type of guy who raises his game to the level of that of his teammates and I am hopeful that he and Kevin Love can eventually provide the glue around 3 more offensively-minded starters.
What say you? Who do you raise your virtual whiskey glass to?

Agreed
I found this site by mistake at the end of last season. I was doing a Google search to get info on Pekovic to see if he could help the team, and Canis Hoopus was an option. I have read almost every day since that day.

I happened to be browsing the Timberwolves page of
SI.com and there was an article link in recent news. I read the article and started going to SI regularly and eventually I just skipped over SI and came straight here. I too, if you can’t tell, frequent the site every day (too often in fact….).

I went to the Timberwolves page on Yahoo.
They had Canis Hoopus as the Wolves’ blog.

Um is there anything positive about the Franchise
Besides Sessions Al, Flynn and Love..We are a bunch of No Talent Wannabe NBA Players..

Its not like you can turn around a franchise in 3 months.
The Wolves really needed to be stripped down to the studs to really start the rebuilding process when McHale was depending on Foye, Telfair, and Mike Miller to carry this franchise. The four players you listed are nice to have, but you also forget about assets like Rubio, Pekovic, Charlotte’s first, Utah’s first, a likely Top 4 or better pick, and all of the cap space the Wolves will have. This year is awful, but at least there is reason for hope.

I am thankful for a NBA franchise, A beautiful court, and extremely cheap tickets.

I seriously hope fans
who can’t afford pricey tickets start to take advantage of this, they can see NBA basketball for less than 50 cents on the dollar.

I'm thankful that Love's almost back,
and raring to prove that he’s not lacking in offensive skills himself. I think the kid’s got a good shot to be more than a complementary player.
(But Corey? One night’s decent shooting does not a rotation player make. 1-11 the next night?)

Well it suddenly strikes me that
this might be a moderately empty thread as most people are rather cynical about the Timberwolves right now. So I’ll add my two cents.
I’m thankful for:
The Nets
Assets, Assets, Assets.
The best Euro-Assets of any team in the league. Henk Norel in 2011 anyone?
Future picks
Kevin Love and his man-rebounds coming back soon
Corey Brewer and all the effort he brings on offense and the skill he brings on defense
Ryan Hollins: This years Craig Smith, who should be rewarded with more calls or at least as many as he is earning
Ramon Sessions who has not complained despite his burn
An improved national outlook, or at least the potential to improve it with some Ws
An owner who has shown every sign of wanting to keep the franchise here
As I call them, our Big Bench of coaches who can bring us some serious experience and hopefully good coaching when the right assets are here (Ironically, “Big Bench” could also be the name for our starting lineup)
Tubby Smith, who might indirectly bring basketball fandom back to the Timberwolves
And finally to Sebastian Telfair, who is one of the very few people that has ever been truly saddened about being traded away from this team

Thankful
I guess I am a very negative poster (based on comments in the other thread) so I hope this changes that opinion.
1 – that we have a marketing / customer service department that realizes that this is not the best year and has gone out of their way to make season ticket holders as happy as possible.
2 – that we have a roster full of “good guy” players. I have met several and my impression is that they really are decent human beings. No big ego, not give you the time of day guys in the bunch.
3 – that we have a coaching staff with a good track record of working well with young players.
4 – that Talyor is willing to keep losing serious (and I mean SERIOUS) money to keep the team in MN so that fans (like me) can watch NBA action in person. (ooooh so hard not to make a sarcastic comment here….)
5 – that we have some excellent hustle players (Brewer, Love and Cardinal come to mind – certainly others) to use as models for our kids to emulate on the court.

an optimistic outlook, our PG situation, Love, and crossing my fingers on Brewer. Definitely the Wolves staying in MN, our coaching staff and owner.

Good points abouts some organizational strengths and the players' character
It beats the JailBlazers. It beats having Michael Heisley, Chris Cohan, or Donald Sterling as an owner. Even more than better talent, I think you need to begin with the proper vision and team culture, and I’m thankful for that (so far).

Agreed on the Glen Taylor bit
I feel safe in saying that the Timberwolves will be in MN as long as he is in charge. Although I wouldn’t be too surprised if he decided he didn’t want a part of them anymore…

Corey's doing much better this season.
Al Jefferson’s coming off of a horrible ACL injury and is playing well.
Jonny Flynn appears to have been a very good pick by the Timberwolves, which is pretty rare.

nowhere to go but up!
yeah, the wolves are awful right now, but, like i said in the last post—
this squad somehow took the celtics down to the wire. i believe that this team can compete, they just need an epic dose of basketball viagra. they have lost their confidence and it shows.

I'm thankful that Glen Taylor owns the team
Which might sound odd considering how much we felt he dragged his feet in finally outing McHale, but the truth is another owner would have probably moved this team to a different state by now, and then we’d have nothing.
Taylor’s a reliable owner and a loyal Minnesotan.

I am thankful Rubio is in Spain
and not exposed to what is going on this year. He can still be the guy with promise for the future who will hopefully be a wonderful positive jolt in a couple years when the team really needs the final piece of the puzzle.

Really, I'm thankful we can look forward to Ricky Rubio.
I think he is something of a last great hope at this point for me. If he’s bad, or we trade him in a bad, not-on-our-terms-or-for-equal-value trade, I will be pretty defeated.

That Kevin Love’s return is only a week and a half (or less) away!
by Blakeley on Nov 28, 2009 4:59 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I am thankful Love is not playing
although not that he was injured.
Anybody wondering how good Love is will really know when he returns. I am one who will probably appreciate him much more in a month than I otherwise would if he played all year. Also, a high pick will now be guaranteed even if the team wins 40% of the games once he returns.

i can’t be thankful for wolves related things in the same way that you guys can, but here’s my thoughts on what wolves fans have to be thankful for:
1. all that cap space. johnny and ramon will have someone to pass to soon enough.
2. the possibility of evan turner.
3. kevin love’s upcoming return. seriously, can’t say enough about this guy. i remember laughing at the draft day trade to acquire him. i couldn’t have been more wrong. mchale’s best non-garnett moment.
4. corey brewer’s existence. i don’t care if he’s good or not. watching him play makes me happy.
5. and to steal a page from MPLAX’s book, the canis hoopus community. there’s a reason i stop by here so often. you guys know your stuff.

Ready to see what kind of year 2 leap he can make.

A few things....
1 – We have played a tough schedule thus far, with 11 out of 16 opponents sporting records of .500 or better, including playing multiple Division leaders and contenders. The schedule will start to ease up a little bit.
2 – Kevin Love’s return bodes well in two areas we are really weak in right now – rebounding and FTAs. Help is on the way soon.
3 – Hollins, Jawai, Flynn, and Sessions are all sporting very solid TS%. Flynn in fact has a better TS% than Derrick Rose and Russell Westbrook and he’s right there with Brandon Jennings and Tyreke Evans. It’s our wings that are killing us here. Incredibly, Corey Brewer has the best TS% of the Pavlovic/Wilkins/Ellington/Brewer foursome. That is the story of the season – historically poor scoring efficiency from the wings. Up the middle we ain’t half bad.
4 – What others have said above re: Glen Taylor.
by Rascal Flatts on Nov 28, 2009 5:11 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I, too, am thankful that we seem to have “good guy” players on the roster. However, most of the people gone today who were with the roster last year were “good guys”, too. I am grateful we don’t have the headache of players such as AI, Starbury, etc. or players like Tracy McGrady who you really don’t know if you can trust anymore. That said, I am hoping that one of those “good guys” will develop to play like McGrady used to play.

I'm quite thankful there's a lot of the season remaining.
Lots of time left for Rambis and the staff, which I know I’m thankful for, to improve this team. Not to mention K-Love’s return or possible moves at the trade deadline.
As others have mentioned, Glen Taylor is a very generous and willing owner. If we didn’t have a team here, I don’t know if I’d follow the NBA anywhere near as much as I do. I tend to like him far more than any other owner in town.
You were a daydreamer, a sass-mouth, and, not infrequently, a bit of a gigglepuss. Somehow I doubt twenty years of amphetamines and failure have done anything to improve that.
by Kevin Loves McHale's Navy on Nov 28, 2009 7:06 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I’m grateful for not having to go to the other boards I used to frequent to get my NBA fix; reading black-or-white, binary thinking and people not willing to accept viewpoints that challenged their own is what makes it more difficult to develop a fan community.
The team? It’s tough to say. Watching Brewer and hoping that his effort rubs off on his teammates more often; seeing a game like the Celtics game where the guys had a spirited effort all night and didn’t back down from a team that so brazenly tries to intimidate you; seeing a coach try to develop habits in his players instead of going for the short-term fix. Also, the likelihood that it’s as bad as it’s going to get and that better days are ahead. I didn’t become a Wolves fan consistently until I had cable, so I could easily choose to ignore what was happening to them back then and follow the teams on the NBC doubleheaders. This year’s start is worse than the last two because I can’t funnel the losing into disgust with Wittman and McHale, two guys with a significant track record of being bad at their jobs.
by pagingstanleyroberts on Nov 28, 2009 7:14 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Good point about not having McHale or Wittman around to funnel anger towards. Hadn’t thought about that in analyzing my frustration. Don’t know what you got till it’s gone.

1. Canis Hoopus and Stop-n-Pop. Best sports blog I know of. Even after the darkest, most miserable losses, there’s insightful commentary. Pop, I hope you’re rewarded for your diligence with at least 28 wins next season.
2. Even though some may never be good enough to be NBA starters, the youngsters are gettling lots of PT. This will pay dividends this year and next.
3. Picks.

Thankful for
1. This blog. Not saying that as obligatory slobbering, but not living in MN there are not a lot of sources to stay connected not just to each development by the club, but to the thoughts of some folks who understand the game better than I ever have. This is my favorite sports blog, and keeps my interest in the team high even during the dark times. I am thankful that so many folks on here follow all the other teams and players in the league muh more closely than I can, and I learn from their insight and spirited debates.
2. Kevin Love. For renewing my interest in the Wolves. Watched most of his college games on TV and just loved his game. Not just for the unique skill set, but also because he was so damned tough and determined. Couldn’t have been more thrilled to see him go to the Wolves after my long distance interest in the club had waned. Initially I started looking for Wolves blogs to try to see how he would be received. I expected huge skepticism and hoped he would be able to translate his game to the NBA to convert the disbelievers. Especially those who would have rather had Mayo, who did not particularly impress me in college, or so far int he pros.
3. Kurt Rambis. I’ve never loved an NBA team like I did the Showtime Lakers. The Rambis love is therefore obligatory. But he’s always been a class act, and everything he’s done since he’s taken over seems on the mark. I’m not sold on the triangle, in general or specifically with this club, but I believe Rambis will not coach by ego and will adjust what he needs to adjust for success.
4. I am somewhat thankful for a down year in the Pac10, currently my local conference, which should result in watching less college ball this year, and not being so obsessed about the 2010 draft.

Hope
I’m thankful that there is hope with this franchise. Hope that in a few years the wolves could be contenders. Hope because the new GM seems accountable. Hope that the coaches know their reputations are ultimately on the line with how well the players develop.

I am thankful for:
1. As everyone else has said, all the great posters here.
2. The massive amount of flexibility and the impressive cache of assets this team has going forward. Optimism for the future is not something we’re used to around here.
3. How good this team will look when we have some wings that can actually execute basketball at a 6th grade level and hit some shots.
4. How losing Love has shown us his true value, and that he’ll be back soon.
5. That Flynn looks good, despite his flaws.
When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead. True story.
