Going for 16 in a row; Game Thread #17

Minnesota Timberwolves at Denver Nuggets, Nov 29, 2009 7:00 PM CST

Nugget-fallon_medium

The Wolves will try to avoid tying a franchise record 16 losses in a row tonight in Denver.  It would be the 3rd time in team history that such a mark has been met (although one of the streaks spanned the end of the 93/94 season and the start of the 94/95 one).

The loss would also tie Kurt Rambis with the just-fired Lawrence Frank for the coach with the longest losing streak during the 09/10 season.

Will the Wolves tie a team record?  Will Rambis become the losingest coach in the league? Will Minny beat the spread?  Will Melo go off for 30+ in a quarter?

The answers to all these questions and more, tonight at 7.  Opposition blogging is being done here: Denver Stiffs

Enjoy the game.

just wanted to say hang in there Wolves and Hoopus faithful...

I’m no longer in MN, can obviously never get the Wolves on TV, and have a job that keeps me busy as hell so haven’t been following much, but just wanted to send a post of support – I come here and check in once and a while (Wolves are still my fave team after all), and this site is still awesome, S/P still writing great posts and the comments still really smart despite the rough season. Also Secretary Kissinger emailed and told me maynholup got season tix for $125, gotta love any team and any town where that’s possible. Anyways hope you guys are all doing really well, and go Wolves (when’s the first NJ game?). ;)

Dare I say this?

But I think Karl may have figured this out. SInce before the trade to acquire Iverson I’d been waiting on the other shoe to drop, but the Nuggets, and Carmelo in particular, have gone the other way instead.

Anthony was even the target of repeated Karl barbs in the press a few years ago. It just didn’t happen the way it usually does.

Noticed that in summer-league video too

He did that quite a bit in that situation, but you never know how it’ll translate to the real NBA. I think this bodes really well for him down the road. He’ll always be able to get layups and free throws at least (maybe more as he gets more experience/respect), so that’s one surefire NBA skill he has. Now as for everything else…

Obviously it isn't over yet...

… but we should give the guys some credit. Even with the deficit at the half, the Wolves were shooting 49% from the field, the Nuggets were at 51%. The Wolves were -3 on the boards, -2 on TOs and the big difference between the two teams was the fact that the Nuggets were +10 on FTs.

They’ve shot pretty damn well, especially for this team, going into the fourth. +2 on the boards, even on TOs and picked up a ton of assists. I really, really hope they can keep control of this game and pull out the W.

Is this a game..

that turns around the season?

Maybe go .500 from here on out?

I'm a little confused

haven’t seen the game, but how has Damien Wilkins filled up the stat sheet so nicely yet he is one of the few players with a large negative +/- (him and Jawai really)

by Mplax on Nov 29, 2009 9:21 PM CST reply actions

Horrid first quarter, which he played in its entirety

since then he and the rest of the squad have been stellar.

Jesus Christ

I feel like I’m a recovering alcoholic, and somebody is suddenly trying to shove a drink down my throat.
Where the hell did this game from?
I had started building up emotional walls.
They are crumbling.

Now, I’m left listening to the radio with my laptop.
WHOOPS.
Would have been nice to watch this one.

It's about time!

Melo’s D consists of a lot of pushing and elbows – can’t believe the refs had the guts to call it.

by SoDakHmr on Nov 29, 2009 9:27 PM CST reply actions

And tons of slapping, too. He’s like that annoying Dbag at the Y who’s always poking, slapping or elbowing you on D or shoving you out of the way when you go up for a rebound, and he gets away with it because there aren’t any refs (or his name is Melo).

When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead. True story.

They fought back

They didn’t crumble when down 17. Good for them.

Because there are no fours.

Right?

Perhaps the firing of Franks was exactly the motivation the Wolves needed. “Cripes, we can’t get Rambo fired with only one win!”

I think it's because

I bought a Nets sweatshirt this year. It was the only NBA logo sweathshirt at this particular convention center sale and it was $10. I sincerely apologize to any Nets fans reading this post.

Also, I am selling all of my Timberwolves gear… which only consists of a Craig Smith signed jersey.

We hit almost all our FTs down the line and didn’t let terrible calls get to us. Very, very good way to close out a team.

You were a daydreamer, a sass-mouth, and, not infrequently, a bit of a gigglepuss. Somehow I doubt twenty years of amphetamines and failure have done anything to improve that.

by Kevin Loves McHale's Navy on Nov 29, 2009 9:31 PM CST reply actions

And what a team to close out

Denver on the road. That is a really, really tough out. Total shocker.

by Rascal Flatts on Nov 29, 2009 9:32 PM CST up reply actions

that was (somewhat) encouraging

by JiveLive on Nov 29, 2009 9:32 PM CST reply actions

We finally win a game

And then Marny starts it off with a Black Eyed Peas reference. Sigh….you can’t win everything.

by nja700 on Nov 29, 2009 9:34 PM CST reply actions

Congrats. You're lucky to have Flynn.

The end of this game showed that you guys got yourselves a “keeper” in Jonny Flynn. He controlled tempo, & was a threat to score anytime he wanted. You had the feeling no one could stay w/ him. Eventually he’ll start to score consistently, then you’ll have a stronger, more athletic Steve Nash! Good win.

by Verbal Kint on Nov 29, 2009 9:34 PM CST reply actions

Thanks a lot for the sportsmanship

Always good to get a respectful rival fan around. I would’ve posted at DS but I didn’t want to interrupt LACK.

by nja700 on Nov 29, 2009 9:38 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah- minor meltdown over there. LOL

This is one of those WTF losses every team has, but I was impressed with you guy’s gumption in this game. If you EVER find a way to keep it close late in games, you ’ll win more than you lose! I REALLY like Flynn.

by Verbal Kint on Nov 29, 2009 9:40 PM CST up reply actions

Gomes

I’ve always liked Gomes. He’s incredibly streaky, but if he can put it together, I think he would be a good guy off the bench. I say we keep him around.

by JiveLive on Nov 29, 2009 9:37 PM CST reply actions

He is what he is at this point

I don’t see him being consistent unless he’s the SF for the Lakers or some other contending team that allows him to get wide open shots all night. The #1 priority going into this offseason is to upgrade the position he occupies.

by Rascal Flatts on Nov 29, 2009 9:40 PM CST up reply actions

well, yeah. And SG

by JiveLive on Nov 29, 2009 9:43 PM CST up reply actions

His contract will prevent that

Once they inked Corey’s option year, Ryan Gomes was already packing his bags. The cap consequences of keeping Gomes around would be nasty.

"It has come to the editor’s attention that the Herald-Leader neglected to cover the civil rights movement. We regret the omission."

by feral on Nov 30, 2009 9:35 AM CST up reply actions

I don't think..

….this is getting enough play from the local media. Gomes has a relatively (to his production) huge contract that, if not picked up, could push the cap space an additional 4+ mil over what it already is. If anyone has incentive to go nuts this year, it’s Gomes.

I would like to give props to Flynn

Spectacular game for him on both ends of the floor. He basically outproduced both Billups and Lawson combined, and defended Billups like his life depended on it.

and congratulate y’all. I caught most of that game, and it really put a smile on my face.

by NoiseMekanik on Nov 29, 2009 9:53 PM CST reply actions

The other thing to note, besides Gomes, is Corey Brewer had a very good game as well

6-10 shooting, 5 rebounds, 2 steals.

I think this could be a regular thing for him when we find a wing that can consistently score the way Gomes did tonight. (Rudy Gay…?)

by Oceanary on Nov 29, 2009 9:54 PM CST reply actions

Looking forward to Wednesday

Now that the elephant has left the room and the Nets are the only team with a double digit loss streak i’d like to see the same effort out of our guys for memphis on wednesday. What a great game. Granted if you only watched the second half you would of thought that we were winning by 20 the whole game.

GO WOLVES GO!

by GHACAN BLACKSTAR on Nov 29, 2009 9:57 PM CST reply actions

First time in a while (all season?)

Where we had pretty stat lines from every starter. All of them were in double figures (and then some) and there weren’t any ugly turnover #s from any single player.

by nja700 on Nov 29, 2009 9:58 PM CST reply actions

There might not of been ugly turnover numbers but there were some bad turnovers during the game if you watched it. Unnecessary turnovers i might add.

by GHACAN BLACKSTAR on Nov 29, 2009 10:06 PM CST up reply actions

Let's give a hand to Johnny Flynn

learning a complicated offense, counting on Brewer and Gomes etc. to make shots and get assists, being 5 ft 10 in, avg a 15 & 4 – he’s going to be just fine.

by Son of Gerald Green on Nov 29, 2009 9:58 PM CST reply actions

Yes, there is. Yikes.

It’s strange to see people reacting so strongly to one single loss.

by LoveTo on Nov 29, 2009 10:20 PM CST up reply actions

Of course

I’d be pissed if I were them too. They’re more concerned about competing with the elites, and then they lose to a team who’s 1-15? They’re probably as pissed as we are excited.

by nja700 on Nov 29, 2009 10:36 PM CST up reply actions

Hope?

The Wolves played great in the 2nd half. Denver could be accused of taking them lightly, but they didn’t let them turn the switch on and win anyway (like the Boston loss this year). They played smart — clock management — and made shots when they needed to down the stretch. They moved the ball on O and played good D. Good playing/good coaching.

Shows they have the talent to win. I was getting discouraged by all the double-digit blow-outs. With time and Love, hopefully they become competitive on a regular basis. That’s all I want. With flynn and a healthier Jefferson, they will win some of those close games.
