GameThread #24: @ Sacramento

Minnesota Timberwolves at Sacramento Kings, Dec 12, 2009 9:00 PM CST

In case you haven't heard the TV promos for tonight's game, the Wolves will be taking on Kevin Martin and the Sacramento Kings tonight. Except Martin won't be playing because he's injured. As he has been for all but 5 games this season.

If there's a game that the Wolves are "likely" to win on their road swing, it's this one. The same Kings that many predicted would be the worst team in the league, however, have 9 wins already. Three times as many as the Wolves.

Go visit Ghostface Ziller at Sactown Royalty for our opponent's point of view. The man's a pro.

Holy crap, that dunk is just awesome!

We give Corey a hard time, but that was just sick. More please.

Watching Evans tonight

Is probably going to end up making me very sad

by Oceanary on Dec 12, 2009 9:03 PM CST reply actions

At least we didn't pass on him or..

..trade him.

Because there are no fours.

Was trying to figure out how these guys are 9-12

They’ve had 11 home games. Eight wins at home vs MEM, GS, OKC, HOU, NY, NJ, NO, IND.

Because there are no fours.

I'm eager to see Evans in action.

Frankly, I didn’t like him pre-draft, and still don’t quite understand what makes him so good.

by John Doe on Dec 12, 2009 9:10 PM CST reply actions

I refuse!

I’d rather he be lousy, somehow. He can’t shoot, right? Shouldn’t they be able to sag off him?

by John Doe on Dec 12, 2009 9:12 PM CST up reply actions

That was just a pre-draft argument from people that wanted Harden

Evans is shooting 46% so far this year. He just has such a size advantage. We might want to put Brewer on him for a while tonight.

by Oceanary on Dec 12, 2009 9:14 PM CST up reply actions

FG%

Doesn’t tell us much about a player’s ability to shoot jumpers. His .262 3PFG% suggests he wouldn’t do much if you just played for the drive. I’ll be interested to see why shutting him down won’t be so simple, since clearly it isn’t.

by John Doe on Dec 12, 2009 9:17 PM CST up reply actions

Because he plays point guard

And has an enormous size advantage. He’s 6’6", 220 lbs….that’s like Jonny trying to stop Kobe going to the hoop.

by Oceanary on Dec 12, 2009 9:18 PM CST up reply actions

Perhaps it just that simple.

It looks like he moves well without the ball, too. That’s how his first two buckets have come.

by John Doe on Dec 12, 2009 9:21 PM CST up reply actions

Kings are starting Evans at point guard

Eeeshh….Jonny’s giving up 6 inches and a good 30 lbs in that matchup…

by Oceanary on Dec 12, 2009 9:11 PM CST reply actions

In pre-draft workouts

Jonny impressed by being the only oneof the PG crop to give Evans some trouble. So, let’s hope it has carried over.

Because there are no fours.

I remember Truehoop commenting on that

Said Flynn was the best defender of the group, and Evans the best scorer

by Oceanary on Dec 12, 2009 9:19 PM CST up reply actions

Jonny Flynn!

Loses track of his man on the first play. Nice to know he’s learning, since that’s what we’re starting him for.

The white man oop!

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a lob pass handled like that. Props to Love for getting it into the basket though.

Ah, Love...

Still a little hangover from last night. Go up strong man…Kings aren’t shotblockers

by Oceanary on Dec 12, 2009 9:16 PM CST reply actions

He and Al

should have a field day against the Kings’ frontline. I’m expecting a big advantage in offensive rebounds tonight.

by John Doe on Dec 12, 2009 9:18 PM CST up reply actions

Prediction:

Al Jefferson goes over 30 tonight. Not a soul on the Kings who can guard him remotely, and he looks focused.

by LoveTo on Dec 12, 2009 9:20 PM CST reply actions

That's the thing...

Jason Thompson was a great pick for the Kings

Props to Geoff Petrie for not giving in to traditional thinking with that pick

by Oceanary on Dec 12, 2009 9:27 PM CST reply actions

Same with Evans over Rubio...

Although that still may end up being a bad move. I think that it’ll be hard to fault them for taking Tyreke though, regardless of how good Rubio is.

by LoveTo on Dec 12, 2009 9:29 PM CST up reply actions

It won't be a bad move

Because of how great Tyreke has been lately. It may (hopefully for us) be a somewhat disappointing pick relative to those who were drafted after, but he’s been so good already that it’s always gonna be a good pick.

Hollins so far:

Forgets to box out the shooter, allowing an offensive rebound. Fouls for an and-1 on the resulting extra Kings’ possession. Offensive foul.

Oh well, at least he’s making free throws.

Veteran move by Evans there

Swing the ball through a low arc to catch the defenders hand on the shot attempt

Yeah

he’s good. Would’ve been nice at 18 for us.

by LoveTo on Dec 12, 2009 9:33 PM CST up reply actions

Why exactly...

…did we pull Love and Jefferson after 4 and 6 minutes, respectively? They were killing it on the boards, and now we’re down. I guess they’ll be back soon and we can resume the domination, but still, a head-scratching decision by Rambis. No fouls for either of them, incidentally.

by John Doe on Dec 12, 2009 9:35 PM CST reply actions

No idea

I was wondering that too

by Oceanary on Dec 12, 2009 9:36 PM CST up reply actions

Omri Casspi

This year’s Rudy Fernandez

by Oceanary on Dec 12, 2009 9:39 PM CST reply actions

Would a team...

featuring a shooting guard-small forward line-up of Rudy Fernandez and Omri Casspi not be one of the most fun teams to follow ever? It’d be like a cross between basketball and Borat.

They seem to get a lot of offensive rebounds

the same way we do: ugly offense and bad misses leading to unpredictable bounces, with big men ready to capitalize.

by John Doe on Dec 12, 2009 9:50 PM CST reply actions

Is it too much to ask Sessions to work on his free throw shooting. That is the worst aspect of his game.

by Ebomb on Dec 12, 2009 9:52 PM CST reply actions

He made 79%

his first two years, on 400 attempts. Clearly he’s capable. This is either bad luck or nerves, but either way he should get better eventually.

by John Doe on Dec 12, 2009 9:55 PM CST up reply actions

I'd say his worst aspect

Other than his inability to be Chris Paul, is his 3-pt shooting. Not a threat from deep at all. That would help him out a lot, especially if we actually wanted to use a 2-PG lineup.

Watching this team's backups

Makes me think about our plans beyond our future “top player(s)” or starters. What the hell are we gonna do for our bench? That’s a pretty important part of a playoff or championship team, and ours is easily among the worst in the league. Kahn had better have some ideas in mind, because even some of the other worst teams in the league seem more promising in that regard.

by nja700 on Dec 12, 2009 10:59 PM CST reply actions

This team

Makes absolutely no sense. In every aspect. I feel like the Timberwolves were assembled in a junkyard. We’re like Frankenstein’s basketball monster, if Dr. Frankenstein hadn’t gotten his doctorate and instead dropped out of high school to smoke peyote.

Most depressing loss of the year?

We’re at full strength against the team that most analysts thought would be the worse team in the league and we get blown out by 20.

The thing that made me switch this off was at halftime

When did broadcasts start doing up promotional placements like the one for Caribou Coffee as if they were public service spots? Love and Pecherov handing out samples, with the guy from the corporate sponsor comparing his company to the Wolves? That was atrocious.

Maybe I wasn’t watching closely enough, but it seemed as if there should be some pretense that Caribou was…. I don’t know, helping orphans, or supporting Parkinson’s research, or something.

I had watched the second quarter, but felt a sudden urge to watch The Best Years of Our Lives and study pathology then.
