GameThread #25: @ Utah
Minnesota Timberwolves at Utah Jazz, Dec 14, 2009 8:00 PM CST
On December 5th Ryan Gomes & Co. let the Utah Sloans have it and grabbed only their 3rd win of the season. 9 days and 4 losses later, the Wolves take to the Salt Lake without Gomes (out with a not-so-serious knee injury). That means Damien Wilkins will retake his spot in the starting lineup.
Tonight marks the last night of a 3-game road trip and I'd say the Wolves would like to walk away with 1 of those games, but as we all know the fact of the matter is that the Wolves would probably run over their grandmothers for a win at this point.

Gotta play defense tonight
Jazz play much better defense at home, so we shouldn’t expect to be able to out-execute and outscore them tonight like we did last week.
Good news is they don’t have the kind of size or length the Lakers and Kings do, so Love should have a much easier time scoring.
They did beat the Lakers at their home court the other night
Tid Bit about Gomes not playing
Gomes’ 203 consecutive games played streak – was the seventh longest active in league
He's also, in an ironic way, our key player
All the games we’ve been competitive in are the ones he’s played well in. When he doesn’t play well, we lose…usually by double digits.
and that really doesn't bode well for tonight
Hopefully just hopefully Damien or Sasha can play outta there minds tonight.
Quite the streak...
… especially since he’s averaged over 30 MPG during it. He’s been quite the workhorse.

i just hope he doesn't launch
about 6 bricked ‘heat checks’. Shoot good shots until til you miss, then be a PG Jonny.
Because there are no fours.
Toine
Was that Wilkins with the sloth like reaction?
on that second okur 3? The guy JUST hit one, ya think maybe he might shoot another one?
Because there are no fours.
Toine
Not sure
but you NEVER give guys easy 3’s. It’s the most efficient shot in the NBA outside of free throws (OK, dunks too, but those are worth only 2 points).
by Rascal Flatts on Dec 14, 2009 8:26 PM CST up reply actions
I think Wilkins was watching Mathews in the other corner
Looked like Flynn was the one not sure where to go
Not that Jonny’s 6’ frame would bother Okur much, but still…
Kevin...
Can’t leave Okur like that…especially to double on a freaking guard…
"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"
Logically, Love is a better player to guard Okur than Jefferson
But if he’s just going to leave him open…
Jonny, Jonny
That pass was absolutely Foye-esque. We’ve had enough of the passes to seat 3b.
Because there are no fours.
Toine
We are not even trying to close guys out...
Wide open shots all over the court. If they don’t up the energy, this will get ugly fast!!!
"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"
Kyle Korver
Sweet, he’s healthy. He’s a personal favorite of mine.
Bet the Sixers wish they had kept him.
"The shot it missed by Sessions."
Does not even begin to describe that atrocity Ramon just flung towards the basket area.
Because there are no fours.
Toine
I think we are trying to prove...
That layups are NOT “high percentage shots.”
"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"
Nah.
We’re just one of those teams that brings the average down enough where one can say they’re “high percentage shots” rather than “100% shots.”
That or they cull our data as an outlier.
You were a daydreamer, a sass-mouth, and, not infrequently, a bit of a gigglepuss. Somehow I doubt twenty years of amphetamines and failure have done anything to improve that.

We're at least getting to the line
Still, gotta pick up the defense. No way we’re going to win letting Utah shoot 61%
We need a freakin paint defender
I feel like we’ve dropped into Bulls territory on this. It’s SO OBVIOUS yet no one ever bothers to get us one.
Does anyone on our team understand...
You need to stop the ball on the break? How many times will they just retreat under the basket and let Williams get to the rim uncontested?
"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"
Laimbeer needs to teach some "Bad Boy" style of "D"
If you’re coming into the lane – you takes your chances
Corey Brewer
with the behind the back dribble. He’s learning
The Jazz announcers
were a little too excited that Deron Williams could dribble behind his back while running… it didn’t even look fluid.
And yes, he is obviously one of the top 3 pgs in the league, too bad he is in a small market. I mean, you can be top 3 when there are clearly 3 guards better tham you, right?
Always seems
to happen to Wolves streams. Whenever it happens, everything else seems to be working just fine.
That play shows...
how effective your big men can be with competent wing play. Damn we need a threat at SF/SG!
Apparently, you don't need to be touched to be fouled...
Wasn’t aware of the rule change…
"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"
My God
the way Flynn is opening up the court tonight, we would be great with a couple of wings that could shoot. argh
He still has too much street ball in him
and what I mean is that he’s trying to one-up Williams and he’s getting too jacked up. That strategy will not payoff in the long run in this game.
by Rascal Flatts on Dec 14, 2009 9:06 PM CST up reply actions
Brewer should have gone back to Jefferson on that play
then again, Jefferson should have been moving, at least into position for a rebound.
Oh come on...
Watching him “play defense” and “rebound” is pretty hilarious…
"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"
It pains me...
to watch the lineup on the floor
Corey's been really turnover prone lately
After being almost perfect in that regard at the start of the year

That's not too surprising.
I like to say I follow/support all the teams in town (or at least the big four)… but I probably follow the Wolves more than any other team. It’s almost blasphemy in this market to say something like that.

Zach Randolph lost this game for the Grizz
But Gay and Mayo look like quite the duo. Too bad Memphis was too stupid to save enough cap space to keep them both.
Well…too bad for Memphis anyway…
Hopefully this time next year
Your quote will say “But Gay and Flynn look like quite the Duo” or Even better, “Gay, Flynn and Wall look like quite the Trio”
not necessarily true
and being too dumb to save cap space has nothing to do with it.
Because there are no fours.
Toine
You can
But again, they could have signed him to an extension this past summer and didn’t.
Memphis is notorious for keeping themselves under the cap. That’s what led them to trade Gasol. Tey refuse to go over the cap no matter what.
Memphis CAN match and
be under the tax threshold and sign Mayo after Z-Bo comes off. I am not arguing whether they WILL, just that they are not prevented from doing so by their cap situation.
Because there are no fours.
Toine
right
but not the tax. You are certain they won’t exceed the cap? I have never heard a team that won’t exceed the CAP. Lots of teams won’t go over the TAX. Again, not really arguing here, or trying not to. They are probably losing money and may not match, just saying.
Because there are no fours.
Toine
Ah, I see what you're saying
Not sure actually. Depends on what the luxury tax line is. If it goes down proportional to what it did this year, then they’ll probably be right at it…maybe a touch over.
it will be close
depends on the number of course, and draft picks.
Because there are no fours.
Toine
it will take...
..a sign-and-trade for the wolves to land him.

I think the Wolves...
…are going to be too late for Gay. Either he signs as player #2 wherever LeBron or Wade ends up or he gets matched by Memphis. I’m through hoping for wing players. I think I have something of a jinx. One of my first posts on the blog was how the Wolves could maneuver their roster to get Josh Smith. Last year I wanted Trevor Ariza. This year is Rudy Gay. Maybe I should be wishing for Kyle Korver.

Pavlovic
There goes Pavlovic, breaking up great ball movement with a one-and-done shot when the Wolves have a chance to build a lead.
going for #1
Pavlovic minutes = going for that #1 pick. Maybe we call him Ping-Ponglovic as he guarantees more chances in the lottery. Ok that’s too long, but it’s true.

he should get a kick in the teeth for
every retarded shot he takes, after that he can have his 1 point.
There's Pech's obliviousness
Let’s Maynor bounce the ball off his back before he realizes someone’s behind him
Love's a weird case, I've noticed that
His footwork is great but he doesn’t know how to position his upper body. Usually it’s the other way around with big men.
Love and Brewer
Like Freaky Friday. Love 3-9 and 1-4 FTs. Brewer 7-11 and 5-6. OKay Love now 3-6.
Because there are no fours.
Toine
At the very least, you gotta give it to Pavlovic for not losing his confidence and becoming gun-shy…
Balance
He’s not jumping straight up when he shoots. When he has a chance to get set, he needs to get balance and a higher percentage of his shots will fall. Although, I have no remedy for his display at the free-throw line.

Passing
We need to have some of those brewer, poor floor spacing, turnovers to make this a 2009 Twolves game.
Love's positioning.
Has anyone noticed how many fouls Love draws by getting into proper rebounding position. It’s amazing.
thats a good example
he likes to take that shot when he is way to far away from the basket. Little chance of going in.
I dont mind when he is close to the hoop
I dont get why he decides to take that shot when he is by the free throw line though
Brewer
He’s at his best when he’s moving to the basket. I’d rather see him do that all day and never attempt a shot outside of 15 feet.
Easy baskets.
Keep taking it to the hole and feed Big Al. No need to settle for jump shots at this point.
Think Utah fans
appreciate seeing commercials about Chris Paul at breaks?

would not mind ellington for wilkins, too.
Wow
what a rebound by Love.
Why aren’t our guys moving off of Al’s side of the floor, make them leave the double team.

I dont think anyone has any doubt who will be better
but at this point Sessions is less prone to the stupid turnover
true, but
We need the great plays from Flynn more than Sessions’ steadiness. I like that we have two good PGs, actually. When was the last time we could say that? Now as for the SG/SF….

Sessions would've
made a 3 pointer while getting fouled then missed the FT intentionally rebounding his own miss and making the shot for a 5 pointer. Cause he’s so much better then Flynn

Jonny learned his lesson from the Hornets game
Didn’t just stand with the ball, started his drive with enough time to make a solid play.
THAT’S why you play him late games
So
anyone care to draw up any Jefferson trades? -10 on the game….
Corey and Jonny
co-MVPs. Foreshadowing for the 2027 Finals.
Good Point
Jonny Flynn is going to get a lot of pub for his new career high in points and game winning basket, but this might have been Brewer’s finest performance of the season. Kudos to Corey for contributing to a big road win in a tough gym.
Maybe picking up his option was a good move?
I never had a problem with picking up his option, but there were a lot of good points against it. He seems to be growing more confident on offense lately, especially against the lakers and jazz.

Jefferson for Rudy Gay
dreams can come true.
I agree Oceanary,
I only watched the first half and 4th, but Jefferson’s starting to look better than he did at the beginning of the season. He just seems more fluid.
Love shot 3-9
That makes him 11-37 the last 3 games.
We need Jefferson’s scoring. No one else on the team can carry us in the post like he can.
Let's give Love a little more time
By all accounts shooting consistency is the last thing to come back after playing yourself back from injury.

Take that Jennings and your 41% FG percentage. Curry and your passive game. They put our rookie PG into an offense that’s difficult to learn even for veterans. Flynn is going to only get better and has a monster heart

Exactly, I'll take Flynn doing that
over Sessions “effectively managing” the offense. Flynn is what this organization needs, including all of his rookie ups and downs.

game loser against NO and winner tonight. good to see coach go to him for the winner. brewer did play great, too. Al played good. Need to hit FT late if you are going to be go to. he’s almost back.
All the big Al haters out there..
Did you watch the entire game? Al played well until he hurt his knee in the second half. He gutted it out for the rest of the game. I’m sure he had some reservations about that considering his recent history. There are team websites that consistently over-value some of their players, but the Wolves’ sites underestimate Al’s skill set. (and no, I would not trade Al for Rudy Gay. In fact, since Gay is doing well of late, playing for his next contract, why in the world would you assume that Memphis would be willing to part with him? I don’t think they would get rid of Gay just to accomodate Wolves’ fans.)
If you don't have a 55%+ TS% as a C
then you need to play better defense.
i know -- no trade.
but someone asked, so I put it out there for conversation. Wolves/Al getting better. Learn more from a close win than a close loss. Healthy Al and healthy love could = more wins than last year. certainly a better team to watch. I like Al

Great win for the Wolves
Great games for Flynn, Brew and Big Al. All we need is a consistant outside threat and this will be a tough team
Love
I watched most of the game and our whole team did really well and a lot of players stepped up without Gomes but Love is such a difference maker. He changes the game more than anybody on our team. Take away his 14 rebounds and replace him with Hollins’ 3 that he averages and we lose this game.
Millsap had a nasty block on Al at the end but I have not seen Al go around anybody like he did Boozer in a long time. He is finally getting his speed back.
