GameThread #25: @ Utah

Minnesota Timberwolves at Utah Jazz, Dec 14, 2009 8:00 PM CST

On December 5th Ryan Gomes & Co. let the Utah Sloans have it and grabbed only their 3rd win of the season. 9 days and 4 losses later, the Wolves take to the Salt Lake without Gomes (out with a not-so-serious knee injury). That means Damien Wilkins will retake his spot in the starting lineup.

Tonight marks the last night of a 3-game road trip and I'd say the Wolves would like to walk away with 1 of those games, but as we all know the fact of the matter is that the Wolves would probably run over their grandmothers for a win at this point.

Gotta play defense tonight

Jazz play much better defense at home, so we shouldn’t expect to be able to out-execute and outscore them tonight like we did last week.

Good news is they don’t have the kind of size or length the Lakers and Kings do, so Love should have a much easier time scoring.

by Oceanary on Dec 14, 2009 7:49 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

They did beat the Lakers at their home court the other night

Tid Bit about Gomes not playing

Gomes’ 203 consecutive games played streak – was the seventh longest active in league

by TonyO on Dec 14, 2009 7:57 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

He's also, in an ironic way, our key player

All the games we’ve been competitive in are the ones he’s played well in. When he doesn’t play well, we lose…usually by double digits.

by Oceanary on Dec 14, 2009 7:59 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

and that really doesn't bode well for tonight

Hopefully just hopefully Damien or Sasha can play outta there minds tonight.

Sasha..

Quite the streak...

… especially since he’s averaged over 30 MPG during it. He’s been quite the workhorse.

We’re just one of those teams that brings the average down enough where one can say they’re “high percentage shots” rather than “100% shots.”

That or they cull our data as an outlier.

One of my first posts on the blog was how the Wolves could maneuver their roster to get Josh Smith. Last year I wanted Trevor Ariza. This year is Rudy Gay. Maybe I should be wishing for Kyle Korver.

Brewer really is looking good tonight. If he commits to taking the ball to the hole like this on a consistent basis, he could really become a great piece for us. Very impressive tonight.

Easy baskets.

Keep taking it to the hole and feed Big Al. No need to settle for jump shots at this point.

Jonny Flynn is going to get a lot of pub for his new career high in points and game winning basket, but this might have been Brewer’s finest performance of the season. Kudos to Corey for contributing to a big road win in a tough gym.

by Ebomb on Dec 14, 2009 10:47 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe picking up his option was a good move?

I never had a problem with picking up his option, but there were a lot of good points against it. He seems to be growing more confident on offense lately, especially against the lakers and jazz.

I only watched the first half and 4th, but Jefferson’s starting to look better than he did at the beginning of the season. He just seems more fluid.

That makes him 11-37 the last 3 games.

We need Jefferson’s scoring. No one else on the team can carry us in the post like he can.

By all accounts shooting consistency is the last thing to come back after playing yourself back from injury.

Just that right now we need Jefferson. Love alone won’t get it done

gay helps solve wing

I’d rather sign as free agent then trade Al, of course. I am curious to see healthy al and flynn

by ChicagoViking on Dec 14, 2009 10:57 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I am against trading Al away unless it’s for another post player. If Al and Love both play 35 minutes that leaves 36 minutes left for others. Those “others” on this team suck terribly bad so having another 35 minutes more for these “others” is reprehensible to me.

by Ebomb on Dec 14, 2009 10:59 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly

If we trade Al, it has to be for someone who can at least half make up for his scoring, because right now, Love can’t. Maybe in a year he’ll be able to. But not now.

by onthekubelwagen on Dec 14, 2009 10:45 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I am a huge wolves fan

Take that Jennings and your 41% FG percentage. Curry and your passive game. They put our rookie PG into an offense that’s difficult to learn even for veterans. Flynn is going to only get better and has a monster heart

by Son of Gerald Green on Dec 14, 2009 10:47 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Exactly, I'll take Flynn doing that

over Sessions “effectively managing” the offense. Flynn is what this organization needs, including all of his rookie ups and downs.

by BDavige on Dec 14, 2009 10:49 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

think flynn feels better

game loser against NO and winner tonight. good to see coach go to him for the winner. brewer did play great, too. Al played good. Need to hit FT late if you are going to be go to. he’s almost back.

by ChicagoViking on Dec 14, 2009 10:52 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Best part is...

…Jonny won this game using the lessons he learned in that Hornets loss

by Oceanary on Dec 14, 2009 10:53 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

All the big Al haters out there..

Did you watch the entire game? Al played well until he hurt his knee in the second half. He gutted it out for the rest of the game. I’m sure he had some reservations about that considering his recent history. There are team websites that consistently over-value some of their players, but the Wolves’ sites underestimate Al’s skill set. (and no, I would not trade Al for Rudy Gay. In fact, since Gay is doing well of late, playing for his next contract, why in the world would you assume that Memphis would be willing to part with him? I don’t think they would get rid of Gay just to accomodate Wolves’ fans.)

by ogishkemuncie on Dec 14, 2009 10:54 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Exactly

He carried us, especially in the first half. No way we win tonight without him. None of our other bigs can score for us like that.

Bad misses on those late free throws, but it’s not like that’s a chronic problem with him.

by Oceanary on Dec 14, 2009 10:57 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

i know -- no trade.

but someone asked, so I put it out there for conversation. Wolves/Al getting better. Learn more from a close win than a close loss. Healthy Al and healthy love could = more wins than last year. certainly a better team to watch. I like Al

Flynn blew past Williams on that last play. Man is he quick. But Brewer played a great game tonight. I hope he’s turning the corner now. He needs to not settle for those outside jumpers and continue to attack the hoop. What a great game he played.

Great games for Flynn, Brew and Big Al. All we need is a consistant outside threat and this will be a tough team

by SoDakHmr on Dec 14, 2009 11:03 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Love

I watched most of the game and our whole team did really well and a lot of players stepped up without Gomes but Love is such a difference maker. He changes the game more than anybody on our team. Take away his 14 rebounds and replace him with Hollins’ 3 that he averages and we lose this game.

Millsap had a nasty block on Al at the end but I have not seen Al go around anybody like he did Boozer in a long time. He is finally getting his speed back.
