GameThread #: vs. LA Clippers

Los Angeles Clippers at Minnesota Timberwolves, Dec 16, 2009 7:00 PM CST

Photo

Bill Kostroun - AP

After their comeback victory over Washington on Monday the Clippers should've been riding high. They were able to pull out a 2-point win after playing at least 30 minutes of ugly basketball. But such is life with the Clippers: they looked like one of the best teams in the League this preseason... on paper. But injuries and the curse of Clipperdom finds Dunleavy & Co. at 10-13.

In the previous two meetings this year, LA bested the Wolves but only by margins of 3 and 4. This is a team that the Wolves can beat. And at this point in the season, don't underestimate the power of even the smallest of losing streaks to build this team's confidence in each other.

Ryan Gomes will not play tonight, nor will he do so in the next 2 weeks while he nurses a high ankle sprain.

See Clippers Nation for commiseration about seemingly cursed franchises.

BTW, here's an interesting fact the Star Trib reported

No ex-Timberwolf Kahn traded or let go of this past summer is averaging more than 7ppg this year.

So I think we can safely say that McHale’s “We’re ready for a playoff push” opinion was a complete fail.

This news shocked exactly 1 person in the world

The person, who requested anonymity, said that those players are not being used properly and are more effective in a “Smash Mouth” system.

A "Smash Mouth" system

In which nobody could play defense or get to the line.

by nja700 on Dec 16, 2009 6:08 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Was that person Randy Foye

I seem to remember a lot of Wolves fans thinking McHale was right 8 months ago.

Then again, I haven’t seen 90% of those fans post anywhere in the internet since October…

by Oceanary on Dec 16, 2009 6:11 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Speaking for myself

In the fall of 2008, I had some optimism. It looked like Foye might become a decent starter based on his strong play to end the 07-08 season. Miller’s game made sense from the perspective of spacing the floor for Al, even if his age did not.

By the spring of 2009, I had long since given up any hope for that sorry crew. It was obvious the team had three NBA level players: Jefferson, Love, and Miller. And Miller was playing like garbage due to some wierd confidence or “playing the right way” issue. Miller is also due a new contract soon and is getting older.

I hoped Kahn would tear the roster down to the studs and he did. I was hoping for more of an immediately re-stocking through the Wolves many draft picks. However, Kahn ended up with two ‘deferred’ assets in Rubio and the Bobcat pick. So the team still looks miles away with three NBA level players: Jefferson, Love, and Flynn.

Hopefully next fall the team will be significantly restocked with talent.

Hehe KM

I dunno. I had given up on any hope of success on draft night 2005. At the time, I was honestly pretty indifferent about the Roy/Foye trade, but the instant McHale said Foye would be our point guard, I knew we were screwed.

I feel bad for Foye…I really do. He’s a good kid and he works his ass off. But he’s just completely underwhelming as pro player. Everything he was billed as being good at he’s been terrible at so far, and I think anyone who had actually watched him at Villanove (except, obviously, McHale…) could see he wouldn’t even make it as a converted point guard.

by Oceanary on Dec 16, 2009 6:23 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Too bad Foye wasn't picked

around 12th that draft. He would be looked at as a decent rotation player and have a twelve season NBA career. Instead he will always be the guy who was traded for Brandon Roy. It will dog him for twenty years.

by Rumblebee on Dec 16, 2009 7:08 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Miller hasn't played enough games to qualify

Just 9 games all season.

And personally I don’t consider Richardson ever to have been a member of the team. Just like I don’t consider Blount a member. Though I can see the argument they both are.

by Oceanary on Dec 16, 2009 6:15 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

so now you're changing it?

Yeah, but you didn’t say “in ten or more games” when you made your initial claim. So the suceeding discussion was really just so much bullshit, wasn’t it?

Miller also has 6.1 RPG (among the best in the league for a SF), 3.1 AS, and a +15.56 Eff. Two games he played through a obviously painful shoulder injury, and the last game he was only in for 7 minutes before a pulled calf muscle took him out for December. Foye has had a hard time fitting in in Washington… I said earlier that it might not be the best place for him since there’s so much turbulence in the starting guards positions there and he needs playing time.

Nevertheless, just based on Miller’s contribution you’d easily get a 90% approval out of Wizards fans for the Rubio-Miller/Foye trade.

As far as Rhino goes, it would be worthwhile asking who KLove and Big Al would rather have playing alongside them – Hollins or Craig Smith. If Smith doesn’t get playing time his new bosses will never know how good or bad he is (a la Tyreke Evans). At 14.5 MPG and 6 PPG he’s down from his career 19 MPG and 8.7 PPG but his FG% is actually up to a very impressive .578 from .554.

You could have checked this all out for yourself before you jumped in with your pro-Kahn propaganda. It’s not like there were a lot of players to look up.

But you didn’t… and that makes me wonder why.

by artreddin on Dec 18, 2009 10:01 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It's a Michael Rand piece

I really hope people can finally quit whining about not keeping Foy and Miller. The Wiz are only a few games ahead of the Wolves (and about $15 mil in salary).

My biggest surprise in the article was how little Rhino is playing, especially with Blake Griffin being out all season.

by Rumblebee on Dec 16, 2009 7:12 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Smith's too one dimensional

Doesn’t really rebound, definitely doesn’t defend. He only looked good here by comparison.

The Clippers get more by moving Thornton to the 4 than playing Smith.

by Oceanary on Dec 16, 2009 7:14 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yuck

I would hate having either of those two guys playing major minutes at the 4. Blake Griffin cannot come back soon enough for that team (100% healthy, of course).

The Hawks fan I’m talking to said he was guarding Zaza on the FT extended, and Zaza drove right by him and kinda hit Thabeet in the jaw with his head or shoulder.

They’re trying to figure out if it’s a new break or compound damage on the old one.

At 4 and 21 the Timberpups are exactly even with last years record to this point, it would be sweet to have Kahn make a trade to pick up Outlaw or another player who would help next year, but not play us out of the lottery this year. Any thoughts on an injured player who could be a major improvement on next years squad, but not cause us to lose the high draft pick this year?

by Dogpile on Dec 16, 2009 7:04 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

He might work if toward the trade deadline

Don’t want him winning too many games in January. Someone on this site, may have been “Shrink” wrote about getting McGrady w/o really giving up much to save the Rockets luxury tax. I also saw that Houston could be interested in Sessions.

Try this one:

Rockets get:
Sessions
Blount
Cardinal

Wolves get:
McGrady
1st rounder in 2010 or 2011
About $3 mil cash

Houston apparently wants McGrady out. This would save them several million in luxury tax, and they have Sessions a few more seasons.

Wolves get a mid 1st rounder for Sessions. The Wolves fans get to enjoy watching McGrady. Wolves might also save some money because apparently any games missed by McGrady due to injury is now covered by insurance.

by Rumblebee on Dec 16, 2009 7:18 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

At this point in his career

would McGrady even want to suit up for us?

by bheidge on Dec 16, 2009 7:20 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Where is can he play 40 MPG and score 25 points to get a contract for next season?

by Rumblebee on Dec 16, 2009 8:06 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Moderately reasonable

but I don’t think they would give up a first rounder for sessions just to get rid of McGrady… then again it won’t be a high pick.

don't get why people hate on him

trying to keep the fans interested during the downtimes in what is already a nearly-unwatchable product while trying to shill klondike bars or whatever can’t be an easy job. i think he and natalie both do admirably. is it the fact that he looks like wally, or the fact that people need something to hate?

if he were the reason the players were missing uncontested shots, that’d be one thing. but he’s just providing “entertainment”.

once the team is good enough where the only thing you have to complain about is the timeout entertainment, i’ll be more than receptive. but my guess is that, if we ever get there, suddenly they won’t bother you so much.

until then, let’s keep it about the on-court product.

by John Doe on Dec 17, 2009 12:02 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Totally disagree

As the game stuff goes, the two announcer types are pretty low key. If you have season tickets for an entire year, you get to appreciating that they’re pretty consistent presences who don’t make your head split open.

On the other hand, I could so, so easily have done entirely without the “Timberwolves performance team,” every scrap of arena music, and the overamped fake crowd noises meant to prompt me to cheer “Dee-fense!” Much of an NBA game is calculated to sterilize rodents in the basement of Target Center. I don’t have season tickets this time, and that’s one reason why.

I hate all that too.

But the worst, IMO, is the Howl meter. Opposing teams’ players must think all Minnesotans are retarded. Who howls, really?

by John Doe on Dec 18, 2009 5:26 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Eh,

Most teams do the decibel meter in one way or another, and at least if it moves the crowd is responsible. What I detest is the piped-in bass voice with the “Let’s make some NOOOOOOOOIIISE!” that sets it up.

If I ran the league, or the world, there would be an absolute prohibition against PA systems saying anything but the extremely basic calls. “Al Jefferson. Assisted by Jonny Flynn.” Teams could hire bands, people could bang drums and ring bells and play the trumpet, but no amped sound, or at least not anything above a certain level. If there’s going to be an atmosphere, let it come from the fans.

Oden, we know even with his history of injuries, we couldn’t make a trade we could afford,
Rudy would no doubt cost us at least Love, Sessions and a 1st round pick, but I really like the improvement to the team and the triangle offense he could bring. Houston would love to dump T Mac, but I’m more interested in guys who help next year and don’t screw up the horrible year we have going so far. Outlaw seems like a natural for that, but are there others that come to mind?

by Dogpile on Dec 16, 2009 7:16 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

No way it takes Love, Sessions and a 1st round pick

to get Rudy. He’s not that good. Love is twice the player that he is

TMac

could help next year. Maybe he will end up with a “small” contract because of his history and the economy with the lower salary cap. Rumblebee above has an interesting scenario that could work, probably couldn’t get a first though, depends on the market for a guy like McGrady… which I assume is 1 or 2 teams.

by Rumblebee on Dec 16, 2009 7:21 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

With his injury history

would you trade the Utah pick for him? The guy may never play another NBA game, let alone be an impact player.

by Rumblebee on Dec 16, 2009 10:24 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Of course I would!

Heck, unless we win the lottery, I would probably be willing to trade our pick for him. He was the league’s best defender before he got hurt, and there’s no overstating how much that’s worth. Even if it’s a 50% chance he get back to that form, it’s worth the risk. Even if it takes him a couple years to get 100% healthy, he’s only 21.

Gotta be one of the most frustrating players to have on a team. All-World talent that for some reason sees shooting 43 treys a game and hovering around 40% as good enough. The guy could be in the top 2 tiers of PGs if he played like he could/should.

Rumblelbee, I think you have a good post on the possible trade for McGrady and his expiring contract. I worry that he would really want to play now and improve any chance for one last long term contract he could get. I also don’t think that Houston thinks there is anything left in the tank as far as his game goes, I’d have to agree.
How does Sessions and Ellington for Fernandez and Outlaw sound? It looks like salaries match for this year at least and would definitely improve scoring at the 2 and 3 posistions next year.

If he hasn’t developed good hands and instincts by now, he never will. Jawai on the other hand is younger and much more inexperienced in terms of getting first rate coaching and training. Because Utah doesn't have...

A 6’11" post scoring force or a 6’11" shot blocking freak.

Harder to defend in the paint, harder to score against in the paint, and that’s really the only place we can generate any offense from

grizzlies

they have a sg and maybe a C. If they trade Gay — their best player — we’d have to give them something good. We’d need to sign Gay to Extension. Would have to give them Al, Flynn, Love, or Rubio chip. Can’t see them taking a combo platter of our mediocre players. I would really not like giving Love, Flynn, or Rubio chip. so, I keep thinking Al. Crazy, maybe. But, if we want to transform into a running team. Al would go and next year’s draft becomes about length.

Which 2009 Summer FA would you have liked him to get?

Over pay for Turkoglu.

Carney would be the best SG on the roster right now

by TonyO on Dec 16, 2009 9:45 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

which further makes my point

He can’t get off the bench on a Sixers team that just lost 12 in a row. Scoring may be down b/c of low minutes, but his shooting % is his shooting %.

by ChicagoViking on Dec 16, 2009 9:48 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Good question.

Gerald Henderson and Terrence Williams aren’t doing much. And while Curry can shoot, he’s too small to play SG.

And I remember hoping we’d get Chase Budinger, who went to Detroit right before our first pick in 2nd round (then traded to Houston).

I think Kahn did well in the draft.

Few Thoughts

1. I always hear complaints for more length. Than when we get a player that long’s- he’s medicore at best (Ryan Hollins). The problem with most, real long athletic bigs is that they’re not all that skilled. I don’t think McHale was anti-length. I think he felt that Al Jefferson was the most skilled big he could get. Looking back Bynum would have been a better option. This idea that if we could only get real long skilled bigs everything would be fixed is fine. But who fits this bill that we might acquire outside Derrick Favors?

2. This idea that a player must be awesome because he scores more points on a better team is also quite silly. Most of the time the reason these players- score more points is because they have more plays run for them. They thereby take more shots. When Tony Campbell joined the Wolves he didn’t all of sudden transform into an elite Offensive player. He took a higer volume of shots.

What does OJ Mayo provide outside scoring? Assists? NO ,Rebounds? NO,Elite-Defense? NO, or Off-Ball Capablities? NO.

Where as Love is maybe the Best Rebounder in the NBA. A Brad-Miller like Passer. He’s also terrific at setting picks and screens. This is why Love has the Best Plus/Minus on the Team.

3. The issue isn’t that we played flat or anything else. We shot ghastly from the field because we’re one of the worst shooting teams in league history. Blaming these losses on Front-Court Length is like blaming the Weather. We can’t shoot, We couldn’t shoot last season, and until we become a better shooting team- we’re going to have nights like this.

by Jose Cordoba on Dec 17, 2009 12:07 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Saying most players with length and athletcism aren't skilled is very untrue

Because that includes 3/4 of the league’s starting power forwards. Garnett, Stoudemire, Duncan, Dirk, Gasol, Bosh, Josh Smith, LaMarcus Aldridge, Kenyon Martin, Jason Thompson…

Add to that centers like Yao, Dwight Howard, Bynum, Bogut, Brook Lopez, Andris Biedrins, Kendrick Perkins, Nene……you get the idea.

I get that you like Kevin Love and want to defend him, but c’mon….trying to imply that short players with short arms are better than tall players with long arms because they’re more skilled is just stupid.

by Oceanary on Dec 17, 2009 12:17 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

OK

Oceanary, turnabout is fair play. Saying that long players are better than short players because they have long arms is stupid. Jose wasn’t even making the argument you ridicule. Yes, Love is skilled but Jose pointed out 3 aspects of Love’s game that makes him more valuable than Mayo.

You provide a list. We could have a reasonable debate about whether or not Love is more valuable than some of the players on this list. Some, like Duncan, Garnett, and Dirk are hall of famers. Others like Stoudemire, Nene, Yao, Martin, Aldridge put up some nice stats but have serious weaknesses in their games and despite their length are not known as elite defenders.

Sure, the Twolves could use more TALENTED Length up front, but it’s not easy to get, especially without giving up something in return either in terms of players or in terms of skills (e.g., Hollins has length, but his roster spot might be taken up by a player with less length but more skill). Clearly Kahn realizes the Wolves need length up front. He took a shot with Hollins. It’s way too early to determine whether or not Hollins can be a serviceable 10 minute/pg guy in 2 years. But he’s signed to an extremely reasonable contract in a league where big men earn big bucks. Regardless, this issue is on the radar of the front office and hopefully it will be addressed via free agency or the draft.

Also, if you want to see great post defense watch 6 foot 6 Chuck Hayes in the playoffs against the Lakers.

by littleboxes on Dec 17, 2009 2:20 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I never said tall players with long arms are better because they have height and length

Just pointing out that saying

The problem with most, real long athletic bigs is that they’re not all that skilled.

Is completely, totally, and utterly false. And that using at an argument to defend Love doesn’t carry much weight, if any at all.

by Oceanary on Dec 17, 2009 2:28 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

In any case, the comparison for Mayo is Eric Gordon

At this point if you were choosing between Mayo and Gordon based on their numbers so far, you’d hesitate because Mayo had shouldered more of the load for his team but you’d very likely go with the Clipper.

Minor question for you, Jose:

You said

Looking back Bynum would have been a better option.

In what sense was Bynum ever an option? Was there a ‘KG to LA’ deal featuring Bynum that I’ve completely blocked out of my memory? (There’s a distinct possibility that I did. Seeing KG go play with Kobe would have killed me.)

I’m not sure I like Bynum over Jefferson. For all Bynum’s length, Jefferson is still the better rebounder. Bynum is much better as a defender, but offensively… I don’t know. He’ll dominate some nights, and then take an entire week off and put up 8/6 lines. He’s playing behind the best offensive 1-2 punch in the league; he should be dominating every night. Jefferson’s consistency gets somewhat taken for granted. If Bynum were here in his place, I suspect we’d be extremely frustrated with him a lot of the time. The Lakers can get away with it because they’d be dominant either way and have the luxury of the league’s best backup big man to sub in on nights when Bynum isn’t getting it done.

Here's the Deal

This team’s problems have nothing to do with the starters at 4 or the 5.

Second I consider length- a player longer than Al who has a standing reach of 9’2. So this is a pretty limited list. (Oden, Howard, Bynum). The clamorings are for pairing Al with a 7’0 footer (Hasheem Thabeet) no matter how devoid of skill they maybe.
