Direct from the Target Center
The Timberwolves were generous enough to host a group of Hoopus members for Wednesday's game against the Clippers. Thanks to shogun and Dikembe is Immortal for the pictures. And thanks to Suzie and Jeff with the Timberwolves for showing us a good time.
I hope you can join us for Hoopus Night later this season. We may cheer together or cry together, but at least we'll be together.
Slideshow below the fold.

Nice eye
Several curious little details, there. The Radiation Area, the dryers….
"It has come to the editor’s attention that the Herald-Leader neglected to cover the civil rights movement. We regret the omission."
It was a fun tour — and a great distraction from what was apparently a bad 3rd Quarter.
My favorite part was when Ricky Davis trotted past us (during the middle of the 3rd Quarter, mind you) and went toward the players’ garage. He re-appeared a couple minutes later, and I haven’t the slightest idea what he was doing. Gotta love Ricky Buckets.
Ricky came from the players' garage...
which is in the opposite direction of the locker room. And, for some reason, Crunch was with him.
Draw your own conclusions about what they might’ve been doing…
What was the halftime show?
Did Ricky take shots at his own basket for Crunch to slam home on putback slams?
"It has come to the editor’s attention that the Herald-Leader neglected to cover the civil rights movement. We regret the omission."
My favorite part was the discussion with the team doctor
It was brief but it provided some nice insights into treatment, like the consequences of taping ankles just for the heck of it (pressure can transfer to the feet and knees and cause problems there), or why NBA players come back from sprained ankles in a day or two when regular people take weeks to heal.
I figured Ricky was just taking a bathroom break.
Why do they come back so quick? I’ve always wondered that, having been victim to numerous sprains that all took at least a week to get back to playing shape.
When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead. True story.
The doc said
that its just part of being such a gifted athlete. He said that the people who can’t heal quickly get weeded out before they get to the pros.
Agree on the 3rd quarter
The tour was very similar to the video footage what I’ve seen I think last year on tv. We had a good time and were taking away from the on court happenings. We’ve seen Ricky 2x, Crunch tried to run over us with his Segway, we met 2 people of the training staff, one of them overseas all the athletic teams in the twin cities, they were talking about injuries and its relation to team finance, production. Was also good to have 3d experience with fellow bloggers. Looking forward to Hoopus night…
What's with the Palmer's & Degree in every locker?
Are they team sponsors or does our team just like to smell the same?
Not very nice facilities...
As a season ticket holder, I’ve done the locker room tour with Jeff Mueneke on a couple of occasions, including last year. It was fun, don’t get me wrong, but the overall impression I came away with is just how sh*tty the facilities at Target Center are. I suppose for a fan who can’t help but be disappointed by the concourses, food concessions, etc., it’s reassuring to know that we have parity with the players themselves. But boy - an arena can sure get outdated quickly in 20 years. The Wolves and/or the City of Mpls really need to pump some money into the dump to bring it up to standard (green roof is not enough). It must be pretty dispiriting to know that amateur athletes on the other side of town (TCF stadium) have far more luxurious digs.
matter of perspective
Have you seen the pics of the Gophers locker room at TCF? Or the locker rooms at the new Target Field? For that matter, ever been to the practice facilities of a major NCAA university? Newer facilities, particularly professional facilities, are far more luxurious than Target Center: more space, more amenities, a lot more areas for the players to lounge and hang out, state of the art meeting rooms, massive state of the art weight and training rooms, etc. As you might guess from my avatar and username, I’m an alumnus of the University of Miami, and I worked for the Athletic Dept for my work/study position as an undergrad. Even in the mid-1990s, the athletic complex at “the U” was far nicer and more sophisticated than what the Wolves have, and now they’re about to break ground on a new one. In the NCAA, it’s an arms race for recruits. But is the NBA much different? If you’re a player considering a free agency destination, or a draftee visiting with teams, what sort of impression are you going to get of the franchise when you compare say, the Bulls facilities (United Center, the Deerfield practice complex) with Target Center?
As for the fan experience, if you haven’t been to other NBA arenas, believe me, Target Center is woeful. I’m always torn on game nights (like tonight) as to what to do for food. I can’t leave work even earlier to get a bite beforehand, I can’t fathom the notion of eating the crap that passes for concessions at TC, and waiting till 9:30 or 10:00 to eat isn’t too appetizing (pun intended) a prospect either. As a contrast, I attended a Heat game at American Airlines arena last spring, and they had several fresh and healthy concessions: sushi, made to order deli sandwiches and salads, a really nice Mexican stand, etc. I really had hopes this situation would improve when Anschutz took over arena management, but nothing so far.
These guys are athletes, not Gods
I think they’ll be fine.
I suppose you think NBA players don’t make enough money either…
Not that Oakland has money to burn on pro sports arenas...
… but I must say that the Target Center is approximately 20 times nicer than Oracle Arena. It’s laughable that an NBA team plays in such a cramped, poorly maintained facility. I always thought the Target Center was a fairly nice arena, especially given its now advancing age.
As I posted above, it's obviously all relative.
I believe you that Oracle Arena is a pit. But this doesn’t make Target Center nice. I have a feeling if we could arrange all 30 (is that the number of teams in the NBA? Two LA teams share Staples though…) NBA arenas on a continuum of luxury and fan amenities, Target Center would not be in the upper half. Subjective I know, but certainly compared to the two other NBA arenas I’ve been to in recent years (American Airlines in Miami and United Center in Chicago), Target Center leaves a lot to be desired. Doesn’t compare well to Xcel either, although I have zero interest in the Wild.
Thinking entirely locally, if the Vikes get their new stadium, which seems unavoidable, the Wolves will clearly be the poor step-sister of local franchises in terms of fan amenities and in-arena revenue streams, even potentially ranking behind Gophers football. This does not bode well for the future of the team and its ability to attract (casual) fans or corporate ticket holders. There’s only so much entertainment dollar to go around….
I would make the Doctor and Ricky my highlights as well.
