A message for Rudy

Memphis Grizzlies at Minnesota Timberwolves, Dec 2, 2009 7:00 PM CST

Bk_aaht041_8x10_medium

Was it just a coincidence that little birdies were chirping earlier this week about Minny's interest in Memphis forward Rudy Gay right before his appearance at the Target Center?  Will Mr. Gay put a little extra oomph into his performance knowing that Minny has millions of dollars in cap space and sufficient assets to pull off an in-season trade or post-season sign-and-trade with Memphis for his services?

Who knows? What we do know is that Memphis is in town tonight and the Wolves have one of their better chances of the young season to put together a winning streak.  Opposition blogging can be found here: Straight Outta Vancouver.

Enjoy the tilt.

Any site that only works in IE is ignoring the intelligent portion of the market. They must be trying to pull something on unsuspecting IE users.

I think Mike Conley is out tonight

It’ll be really sad if we get lit up by Jamaal Tinsley…

by Oceanary on Dec 2, 2009 6:10 PM CST reply actions

His injury

Conley tore the labrum in his shoulder in mid-November, but near as I can tell he hadn’t sat out until last game, which was the second half of a back-to-back.

Why?

He’s pretty much exactly what we need

by Oceanary on Dec 2, 2009 6:21 PM CST up reply actions

Rudy

has never won at Memphis, they had him for 3 plus years and didn’t want to pay him what he felt he was worth. Reminds me of Milwaukee and Sessions , they had him and valued him as a backup at a certain price when Wolves overpaid, they said okay take him. We can overpay Gay and get him but will you win? I don’t think it’s a guarantee you win with him.

by Conned on Dec 2, 2009 7:12 PM CST up reply actions

There is if it's LeBron or Wade

But I think it’s safe to say that won’t be happening.

I think too many Wolves fans has a “LeBron or bust” attitude, as in if we can’t get a franchise player, we’re better off not getting anyone. I couldn’t disagree more.

by Oceanary on Dec 2, 2009 7:14 PM CST up reply actions

Overpaid for Sessions?

Nearly every report or opinion piece I’ve read from pundits I respect (Kevin Arnovitz, John Hollinger, etc) said we got a good value for Sessions. Milwaukee didn’t match because they already have Jennings for the future and they are very concerned about their payroll and the luxury tax.

I think your characterization of Sessions’ signing is exactly what happened with Hollins instead. I do have misgivings about how much Rudy Gay is actually worth, but I don’t think saying they haven’t won with him is a totally fair indicator of his ability to produce wins. Being on that team, I would argue that they’re losing in spite of his talents. I feel like he’d be a bitter fit and a better developmental prospect on our team as well. I don’t expect him to be a major-impact guy, just a strong building block on a young team

by nja700 on Dec 2, 2009 7:36 PM CST up reply actions

I feel

that at 8.5 pts & 3 ast Sessions isn’t worth 16 million. He hasn’t shown me anything to get excited over yet. That production can be had at vet minimum.

by Conned on Dec 2, 2009 8:21 PM CST up reply actions

…?

You’re scrutinizing the value of his contract based on what he’s done so far, 20 games into a season on a new team and an as of yet undefined role? That makes no sense.

When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead. True story.

by Xand1 on Dec 3, 2009 11:08 AM CST up reply actions

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now

as calling Sessions a success would be just as… nonsensical. I like the contract and think he will make it, but there is definitely a small part of me that is worried that Skiles made him look better than he is (and they must have known that seeing as they didn’t match). Same thing happening to Jennings right now, except Jennings hits at a rate close to Corey Brewer.

by Mplax on Dec 4, 2009 12:26 AM CST up reply actions

I feel

over 16 million for a backup point guard who’s averaging 8.5 & 3 ast is way over paid. That production you can get at a vet minimum. Sessions just hasn’t shown me anything to get excited over.

by Conned on Dec 2, 2009 8:19 PM CST up reply actions

We have been talking about him for quite some time.

If we actually do ever acquire him, it will be kind of amazing how this site called it early in the summer. For months, we’ve been talking about him almost as if it’s a sure thing.

by LoveTo on Dec 2, 2009 6:38 PM CST up reply actions

I wish it was a sure thing

It’d be a lot easier to deal with the losses if we knew there was an impact player on the way.

Zgoda’s been hawking Travis Outlaw lately. Blehhh. Comparing Outlaw to Gay is like comparing Pecherov to Dirk.

by Oceanary on Dec 2, 2009 7:03 PM CST up reply actions

Yikes

That’s a pretty hyberbolic comparison. Travis Outlaw is a pretty good player. Definitely good enough to not be on the “Pecherov” end of a comparison. I would love a long, hyperathletic, efficient wing like him on our team. I’d prefer Gay because of talent and upside, but there isn’t some huge talent gulf between them. It’d be like comparing Love or Bargnani to Dirk, maybe. Gay has all-NBA talents and more likely All-Star potential, but Outlaw could be a solid starter.

by nja700 on Dec 2, 2009 7:14 PM CST up reply actions

Ok, Bargnani to Dirk is probably more accurate

I just feel like Travis Outlaw as the summer’s big acquisition would be a huge letdown. That’s something McHale would do.

by Oceanary on Dec 2, 2009 7:16 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed

That Outlaw as our big acquisition would disappoint. I hope that’s not what Zgoda is thinking or reporting.

But as an ancillary piece? We could do a lot worse. I wouldn’t doubt that he might have PT issues with that wing-stacked Blazer team, and we’re starved for wing talent. There aren’t many guys at Outlaw’s price with that potential and that age around, so it wouldn’t be a bad idea to get one at a worthwhile value.

by nja700 on Dec 2, 2009 7:25 PM CST up reply actions

I'd definitely go for Outlaw as a role player

He’s instant firepower off the bench and can play power forward in some situations as well.

by Oceanary on Dec 2, 2009 7:36 PM CST up reply actions

Does he really have potential at this point? He came out from high school, so he has to have been in the league for something like 6 or 7 years. At that point, I think you’re pretty much getting what you see.

He’s not bad, but he seems like a very slight upgrade to Gomes.

When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead. True story.

by Xand1 on Dec 3, 2009 11:21 AM CST up reply actions

Tired of talk about him in particular

or tired about talking about the possibility that he could be here?

I hope it’s the latter, because he might end up here and you will be even more sick of hearing about him (hopefully only about how deserved the Finals MVP over Evan Turner).

He doesn’t have a half-court offense down, but I think it’s a good sign for his PG potential that he has that kind of handle and court vision.

Jack McClinton

I’m starting to wonder what Jack would of done with our team. In college he could shoot much like Anthony Morrow. Granted Jack lacks height and strength to be a guard in the league right now it would of been good to have him hit some shots.

Seems like Pecherov

would have been a better option than Jawai to give us some more scoring punch. Also draws Thabeet out of the paint.

by Rascal Flatts on Dec 2, 2009 7:40 PM CST up reply actions

To play devil's advocate

You could also argue that Jawai’s size would give Thabeet trouble in the post. He always had trouble getting position on bigger guys like DaJuan Blair. My sister has just as much lower-body strength as he does.

Can’t disagree with your thoughts, though. Either way I’m not too worried about both of those guys taking it to Hasheem at this point.

Klondike commercials during breaks

In what life situation would you ever be offered a frozen treat to get a body wax? You’re getting free food to get a free service. Also, why not just go pay a few quarters for one instead of experiencing the excruciating pain of having your (apparently) copious amounts of body hair ripped from your skin? What kind of body waxing shop lets you eat melty treats during the service? C’mooooooon, Klondike. Give me something plausible here. Also, ripoff of 40-Year-Old Virgin. Lame.

Not surprised at all. I made it to two games this year, Mavs and the Bucks. Both fairly pathetic games

by bheidge on Dec 2, 2009 8:10 PM CST reply actions

Flynn and Sessions...

Both looked really good in the first half. If we ignore the “who should be given starter’s minutes” argument, and as each of them becomes more comfortable, we’re going to start seeing the benefits of having a good point guard on the floor at all times. I think it will make a big difference over the course of the season.

by Oceanary on Dec 2, 2009 8:36 PM CST reply actions

Evan Turner looks good so far!

His greatest asset actually looks like rebounding. He positions himself extremely well and has decent ups with a nice wingspan. He’s good coming off of sreens. Seems very active on defense, but I don’t think he has shown too much skill yet. Still, just the fact that he is active is nice.

Solomon Alabi looks like a product of his height and not of his skill so far. One nice finish (he got a nice pass inside with no one on him).

That’s what I have noticed so far.

by Mplax on Dec 2, 2009 9:00 PM CST up reply actions

Also

Turner runs the court very well. When he isn’t in position to rebound, he is streaking down the court and usually is the first one down.

Lighty seems very active on defense, but he seems to have a bit of panic in his game. He could be a good player if he settled down on offense.

Al’s pick setting skills are godawful for a guy his size. He makes zero effort to get in the way of the guard, and frequently he slips down to go sit on the low block, not even rolling, just setting up shop, before his pick accomplishes anything. This is one very underappreciated part of Love, and to a lesser extent, Gomes’ games.

Wolves

at least played a close game. They need to learn how to execute when it counts. Bad shot by Flynn on drive. Jim Pete hit the nail on the head when he said Flynn has to get into paint to make play for teammate as opposed to forcing shots. No question about the clock management by Rambis with 51 ticks left and looking lost. Kurt needs late game situations also.

by Conned on Dec 2, 2009 9:49 PM CST reply actions

Decent game tonight.

Way too many to’s in the 3rd Quarter.

Jefferson should have been in the game in that 6:00 to 4:00 to go portion of the 4th. I think it went from tied to down 4 in that stretch.

Flynn was a ball-stopper tonight. Too much dribbling around doing nothing.

Brewer was non-existent.

Mayo was tough in the 1st Half. Gay was tough in the 2nd. Either would be our best player, right now.

by Andy G on Dec 2, 2009 10:09 PM CST reply actions

I would take Love over Mayo all day.

Mayo is the ultimate ball holder. He would be hard to play with. Best thing about tonight little or no triangle.

by Conned on Dec 2, 2009 10:51 PM CST up reply actions

3rd Quarter

Again it killed us, every time we would run down and pass it right to them. They have to learn to not force passes when they are not there. Again Gomes came through but we need somebody else to make a basket, he is our only guy that can shoot. At the end of the game we had the open looks but nothing but bricks.

I hate to say it but I feel like Jawai has some potential. He needs to spend the off season with the Viking wides to learn how to catch the ball though. BRICK HANDS!!

by Far East on Dec 2, 2009 11:53 PM CST reply actions

Grizz bad at 3rd quarter also

We were already coming back in 2nd. It was a 4 point game I think then they got it back up to 8 just at the last second of half. Especially tough on the road in 3rd quarter. Amazing we didn’t do another 7 point fourth quarter like was done in LA on Saturday night…!
