Bullet time
Washington Wizards at Minnesota Timberwolves, Dec 26, 2009 7:00 PM CST

Here's hoping Love can have an Unseld-type game. For opposition blogging head on over to our excellent sister site Bullets Forever. It's also a chance to take a look-see at Minny East: With Flip, Mike Miller, Randy Foye, Sam Cassell, and the rest of the gang.

Gomes is back
PS..the game on NBATV is blacked out if you live in the Twin cities?
What is more surprising?
Urban Meyer stepping down or Vinnie Del Negro employed as a head coach?
Because there are no fours.

stupid league pass...

I was at the WAS v SAC game last week...
… Where Tyreke robbed Gilbert in the final seconds to seal the win for the Kings… The Wizards are a lazy team. They don’t block out/rebound well. They stand around a lot and depend on their stars (Gilbert, Caron, Antawn) to generate offense. We can beat them.
I noticed that on D in the Wiz - Suns game last week too...
It was the like the Suns were running a layup drill the whole game?

I hope Hollins and JaVale McGee see some burn at the same time
Two of the most athletic bigs in the NBA
my peepers hurt
first chance I’ve had to see a game on TV (don’t live in Minny). . Can’t believe there are still fans of this team that defend/wildly overvalue Jefferson and Brewer.
Brewer looks like he’s playing a different sport than the other 9 guys on the court. A sport that only he knows the rules of and is winning going away.

Why
would we give it to Brewer to shoot at the buzzer.
by Bad News Wolves on Dec 26, 2009 8:06 PM CST reply actions
Must be the Lakers' effect
I’ve seen LA run that play dozens of times, but of course in their world, that’s Kobe at SG
And we have more assists and blocks...
Which happens…like…never…
"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"
Ha
Great to watch Love in that sumo-squat position for about 10 seconds after his tip-in juuuuust rimmed out.
Josh Smith sure rebounded nicely after his foul-fest against us
22 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals, 4 blocks against Indiana
I always love checking out his almost cartoonish lines in fantasy
Al Horford’s awesome 25 & 19 on .786 shooting with 5 blocks is pretty phenomenal as well.
Smith is one of those few players aside from Kirilenko whom you think can plausibly go for a 5×5 line (points, rebounds, assists, blocks, steals). He’s all over the place.
Five assists for Jonny tonight...
Is that already a career high?
"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"
I was joking...
But those numbers do surprise me…much better than expected.
"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"
About his average
In the past month. He’s just gotta cut down on his turnovers, unless he starts averaging 9 assists or turns into LeBron/Wade.
Of course
It’s hard to tell when you’ve made Gil have a bad night when he’s shooting 41 percent and averaging 3.7 turnovers. Yuck. No peripheral numbers make up for that kind of inefficiency.
He's averaged 30ppg in his last 5
Since he’s coming off injury, it’s more accurate to judge him on his most recent games than the whole season
Agreed
He’s just always been really inefficient with FG and TOs, even in prime seasons when he averaged 30ish. It’s also really hard to tell when Gil’s totally healthy, as up-and-down as his knee has been. I guess a good night against Gil is just holding him below 20 or to make him more inefficient than he already is. I agree that Brewer is a great defensive matchup call.
I’d almost prefer Gil gets 30 instead of Antawn, considering Antawn will generally be a hell of a lot more efficient in getting his 30. But we really have no good matchup for him (the perimeter big problem we have) so we might as well hope Gil shoots his team out of the game and our bigs clean up after his misses. Which isn’t all that unlikely with these two teams.
it's nice when the ball goes into Jefferson in the paint
because I get chance to catch up on my reading, pay some bills, play with my kid, and do some light housekeeping without missing any action

that when Hollins gets a rebound he always looks surprised?
by Bad News Wolves on Dec 26, 2009 8:38 PM CST reply actions
The same way
He always does with the ball in his hands with people around him? He’s the master of the “crazy flailing arms after the ball’s been easily stripped” move as well.
Tonight is total bizarro...
We have more assists and blocks than the opponent
I want Brewer to shoot, and Flynn and Wilkins to not
Wilkins has 11 boards while Love has 4
Weirdness…
"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"
Second time you've said that.
Jamison would keep Love away from the hoop when Love is on defense, not offense.
Love got pretty much his season average of defensive rebounds
In the games he puts up huge rebounding numbers, he’s doing on the offensive glass. Look at his game log.
Doesn't make your first statement any less wrong.
(Unless you were implying the brutish strength of Antawn Jamison kept Love out of the paint on offense.)
Offensive rebounds = Jamison on D, Love on O. No reason for Love not to be around the basket like he usually is.
Defensive rebounds = Love on D, Jamison on O. Jamison plays more along the perimeter than most power forwards. Love is pulled away from the hoop where he would grab defensive rebounds.
Or perhaps
Antawn is bad enough on defense that K-Love doesn’t miss the close in shots he might typically miss, therefore he won’t get his own offensive rebounds.
There's the Brewer we know and love
Nice travel.

When his feet aren’t even moving? It’s called a “pump fake” refs…

complete random thought...
but when did it become THE thing to do after every free throw attempt for the shooter to give low fives to his teammates? if you focus on it, it is really annoying. i don’t remember that becoming a trend until the last decade or so in the NBA.
There's an Andrew Bogut video
on Youtube where he goes looking for the lows between shots, nobody responds, so he just gives them to his imaginary friends.

Rashard Lewis
Might be worse; check back in four years.
It took them roughly a month of actual play
to go through all the stages of Foye grief. Randy can be an effective point guard…. Randy is like Billups, who also took some time….. We can go with two “lead guard” hybrid types…. Randy is probably best as juice off the bench.

Good win
I think Love-Jefferson can do it with John Wall in the backcourt. At least that’s tonight’s feeling.
19 Orebs,6 blocks, and just 11 TOs...
…make up for a lot.
I think we had just 1 TO in the first and just one in the fourth. I think. Corey outscoring Arenas on 12 fewer shots and 11 fewer minutes. Ramon and Wilkins getting 21 rebounds. Flynn and Wilkins shooting 3-22 but being a combined +28 (team leaders). Our bench getting much more burn than the Wiz’s. Six wins, 9 losses in the last 15, with Love being 5-8.
What a strange game.
Because there are no fours.
Toine
Corey Brewer the MVP tonight
27 points, 7 rebounds, key buckets, clutch free throws, and lock down defense on Arenas
I'm beginning to regret my comment a few weeks back...
… about Corey Brewer and 20+ point games. He’s averaged 16.7 PPG in his last 7 games, even with those terrible shooting performances vs the Celtics and the Clippers. I really hope he keeps it up.
You were a daydreamer, a sass-mouth, and, not infrequently, a bit of a gigglepuss. Somehow I doubt twenty years of amphetamines and failure have done anything to improve that.
by Kevin Loves McHale's Navy on Dec 26, 2009 10:51 PM CST up reply actions
I'm kind of in the same boat
When we beat the Kings, I said it’d be at least a month before Corey posted a second 20+ game. Turns out it only took him a week.
A far more convincing case could be made...
that the Wolves should bring back Wilkins next year than the one saying they needed to bring back Carney. He’s got good situational awareness that adds something every game. Tonight, it was crashing the boards because of how they were dealing with Love and taking the ball to the hoop once the Wolves got in the penalty halfway through the fourth.
by pagingstanleyroberts on Dec 26, 2009 10:38 PM CST reply actions
Been sayin' since before the year started
that he was a sort of veteran version of Carney last year: Limited offensive game with some threes, probably willing to get after it on defense a bit to justify another contract, playing on a team with a vacuum at his spot.
The rebounding was puzzlingly high early, though, for Damien. From the opening night win over Jersey where he put back the winner as time expired, he’s just been boarding better. He’s at something like 1.5x his career percentage rates in stuff like defensive boarding. That’s a wrinkle, for me anyway.
"It has come to the editor’s attention that the Herald-Leader neglected to cover the civil rights movement. We regret the omission."
Few Thoughts
1. The only issue with Wilkins is I’m guessing they probably add at least 2 wings in the off-season with more upside. The only possibility would be if they let Gomes go. Which I’m kind of mixed on. I guess as a 10-12th Man- Damien would be solid next year.
2. I’m sure glad I sided with Brewer in the Brewer vs Carney Death Match. Although I never really debated it.
It’s also a good thing they picked up Brewer’s extension.
3. Love gets his hand on so many balls it’s amazing.
4. Why don’t the Wizards give Javale Mcgee any burn?
i was at the game...
… all the way from NC tonight. and i was super-pissed that javale didn’t see the court. i wanted to watch him and hollins run the floor together.
This game shows why the contract was extended
of course he has also had about ten games that showed why Kahn waited til the last possible moment to decide. Let’s hope the positives continue.
F*** you, Flip
This game gave me a lot of satisfaction to watch. The strib’s pre-game interview with Flip was as nasty as any I’ve read this year. He was sooo disappointed to see the poor product the Wolves are putting on the floor now, and blathered on about the 7 years we would suffer in lottery Hell before emerging as a playoff team. Now, all of this might be true, but what’s HIS excuse? Our group of not-much-talent-there players just beat the Wiz. My take is, the better team won, and if we played them again tomorrow, we’d beat them again. This is starting to look like a .500 team to me.
You can forget about John Wall. For one example, we just caught up to Philly in # of wins. We’re on the way up; Philly is on the way down.
