Timberwolves website briefly had news of Hart-Devin Brown deal up, but Kahn texted and said it's not done. It's not there anymore

Financial move?
I’m not getting this. It’s not a good or bad move, but it’s just weird.

Roster
Hart has been inactive all season, who will the Wolves remove from their active roster? Brown is shooting over 40% from three this season, but he’s 30 years old, and I would imagine isn’t in the team’s long-term plan. He only makes a little over $1 million next season.
This is definitely a talent win for the Wolves...
But, as noted if we put Brown into the rotation that takes minutes away from our young backcourt that needs to learn.
For New Orleans, it’s purely financial. Hart makes less than Brown, and with Hart’s partial guarantee he can be cut by New Orleans to save even more. Since they’re in luxury tax territory, every dollar they cut from payroll, they save another in tax.

Learn by watching.
Sometimes young players can also benefit from a few extra minutes of watching a veteran run the offense, play defense, etc. With guard talent at a minimum in the up-coming draft, teams will be willing to pay for young talent/veteran help. I’m guessing this is more of an asset than anything.
Trial run
For all those saying we need to “see how Al and Love can play together with shooters,” or just “see Al’s game with a three-point threat on the court,” here’s your trial run. In that vein, looks like a good move to me.
My guess is that Kahn is tired of watching Pavlovic
and would rather give Brown the SG/SF minutes he got. Just a guess.

gotta be another move or two coming...
I like the move in terms of adding talent but I have to think there’s something else in the works. At least he can take Pavlovic’s minutes, if nothing else.
Allows us to move a “bigger” salary in Damien Wilkins to a team looking to acquire cap space?
I might also assume it means Gomes is gone.
hmm
“I haven’t made one trade call since we started the regular season. I really feel the players we have deserve to be evaluated on a season-long basis. I would be content if we don’t make a move.”
Well, this is at least further proof that reading the tea leaves is a pretty much a useless exercise.
The move itself is solid. Like others said, it has more to do with helping the frontcourt rather than finding long term solidity in the backcourt per se. Just because we’re rebuilding doesn’t need we should abdicate or starve ourselves of low-risk talent.

didn’t see this coming, I’m not sure yet. We already have Wilkins and Pavlovic, what does Brown provide then?

Exactly
Pavs has been the worst producing guy on the team all season long. Pech at least provides some nights where he drops 10-15 points or grabs 8-10 boards. Pavs main role is to drain threes and play defense, and near as I can tell he just hasn’t done that very well this year.

neither Pavlovic or Wilkins
have been even close to decent this year. I like the intangibles that wilkins brings to the game for the wolves, but Brown may be able to give Rambis a marginally better shooter to see if that will space out the floor for the frontcourt more. Just a guess.
by TheEvilProfessor on Dec 29, 2009 12:13 PM CST up reply actions
Wilkins hasnt been awful....
But Pavlovic has. Anything that gets that guy less floor time is a good thing.
Anyone want to give odds on another deal being in the works?
I say 2:5 odds that this move was done with another move in mind within the next 7-10 days.
"Come on Eddie, let's get serious."
my guess is either
wilkins or gomes. No one would trade for Pavlovic.
by TheEvilProfessor on Dec 29, 2009 12:26 PM CST up reply actions
Similarly...
I remarked elsewhere that, by the trade deadline, I might be more surprised if we don’t see “Gomes to a contender,” than if we do.
I'd say Gomes then
I like Gomes a lot, but Wilkins has Flynn’s ear and seems to be a bit more of leader on this squad. I wish we could keep Gomes going forward in the future, but I wonder what he might net us? Or rather, what would we want a Gomes trade to net us? Picks? Players? Euro’s?

possibilities
1)Plenty of contending teams that could use either Gomes or Wilkens…and most of those teams have a promising rookie or second year guy glued to their bench.
2) one of the current 2/3’s (or Brown) is getting packaged with an expiring for a significant player
3) or this is part of the upcoming blockbuster Al Jeff deal.
It almost has to be one of these three, right? This deal makes zero sense on a standalone basis.
Zero sense
Unless it’s simply asset accumulation/relatively cheap roster experimentation. Hart wasn’t going to play for us. We get a guy who becomes the second best three point shooter on the team to see how having that kind of presence changes things for everyone else. Pretty low risk deal for Kahn at the prospect of gaining invaluable insight into what kind of guys he may be looking to draft next year.

I don't know...
Unless Hart slept with someone’s girlfriend or something, why upset the roster and trade just to trade? Brown is not going to add anything to this team…what is the insight? How do we find enough minutes for Brown to show us anything?
I’ll be shocked if there isn’t a follow-up trade in the works.
My thoughts
are that Love is the best three point shooter, at least in the sense of taking and making them relatively consistently and using that as a weapon to keep the floor open for him. I had forgotten about Gomes, probably because he’s been out for a bit.
And the insight stuff is about distinguishing between Turner or Johnson or Henry. My conjecture is that NOR called up Kahn with this trade proposal, and in it Kahn sees an opportunity to find out how Flynn/Session/Brewer would do with a real three point shooter. What happens to Love/Al? Does a three point shooter make any difference? At worst he mildly upsets a roster on pace to win 20 some games. At best he discovers something that enables him to make a better choice on draft day, or avoid making a blunder on draft day (at least in terms of skill set fit).
"Come on Eddie, let's get serious."
Who is our best 3pt shooter?
Love’s got far and away the best percentage, and Gomes is above Brown too, but neither has 2+ attempts/gm, nor is a true wing, which I think is part of the equation. I’d say Devin, at 41% with almost 4 attempts/gm would be our “best 3pt shooter.”
I agree
Good trade for us, and either Wilkins or Gomes (or if someone is really dumb Pavs) is gone in the next few days.
Gomes would get the most and though I love the guy he desearves to be on a contending team so part of me hopes he gets traded.
Wilkins has impressed me this season, he’s not great but a good leader and he gives effort every night.

another offer for Hart?!
Do we have a bidding war on our hands? :)
More than likely someone else wants Brown
And is willing to give the Wolves a pick or something for him. He’s been productive for the Hornets this year. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Hart was back after the Hornets cut him.

If you go back several weeks
I posted after meeting my FO friend for dinner before a game, that the Twolves were spending a ton of organizational time (and money) on updating files/evaluations on all NBA players. I further said that it seemed that this was being done to be prepared to make/take advantage of roster moves at the trade deadline – either for salary or competitive reasons. Most experts anticipate that this will be the busiest trade deadline in 25+ years.
So when the Kahn quote was posted (about not taking calls / content with the roster), I called BS. I was reluctant to post that here because I have been labeled a Kahn hater here and I figured I would get blasted again. Did not want to defend myself.
Expect roster changes. And lets hope to take advantage of someone needed to cut costs by gaining a great player.
I might start calling Kahn tricky dicky
because that man has a way of phrasing things that in hindsight are perfectly clear that he didn’t lie…but wasn’t being as blunt as it seemed at the time either. The man is a damn wordsmith.
It wouldn’t suprise me to see Bill Clinton ask David Kahn for public speaking advice.
I would still rather see Kahn as GM then McHale.
