I suggest going out to the movies and seeing Transylmania instead.

Winnable game

No superstars. No matchup nightmares. Rookie pg. New rookie coach. Hope the guys go in believing they should win this game.

That was kinda the point..

With all four wins at home.

You were a daydreamer, a sass-mouth, and, not infrequently, a bit of a gigglepuss. Somehow I doubt twenty years of amphetamines and failure have done anything to improve that.

They could go 4-6 in their next 10.

They have NO, Utah, Sac home/away. And the Cliippers at home. They can win 4 of those 7. They won’t, but they could.

It's a fundamental flaw in the way the game is called...

I’ve been arguing for years to simplify the NBA rules. When a guy initiates contact with another player…the foul should be on him…bottom line. Screw moving feet, screw verticality…

As long as it remains a judgment call, Chris Paul will always get that call.

Not too sure about that

They had a great draft this year. There biggest problem is that David West just isn’t all that good offensively and really poor defensively and they haven’t realized that yet. If they ever do and move him for a player that helps them win more games from the 4 they have an awful nice core going forward.

by Ailuridae on Dec 4, 2009 8:17 PM CST up reply actions

west...

…is a problem but so is their salary structure. they’re going to have trouble adding anyone for a year or two unless they move okafor. and if they do so, they then have the problem of possibly having no frontcourt help if they let west go too.

I see the Paul and KG comparison

but while the Hornets have made bad decisions they haven’t made the disastrous decisions MIN did. Once Sam was traded the Wolves had exactly one above average player (Wally) who half way into the next season they traded for not one but two team killing players.

The Hornets have a problem in that they have way too much money tied up in four players (West, Peja, Posey and MoPete) who aren’t very good and three of them are wings who are best suited coming off the bench. But Thornton and Collison can each fill up a ton of their perimeter minutes going forward and are going to he cheap for a while.

"Blow it up" won't mean Paul like it did KG

They have other parts to jettison, whereas the post-WCF Wolves were shedding the decaying Cassell, Sprewell, and the likes of Hassell. The Hornets will let Peja go, maybe deal Okafor to someone willing to take on his deal….

The Wolves were like Mark Twain’s woman who didn’t have any vices. When she was dying, she didn’t have any cargo to throw overboard. The Hornets have some cargo, at least.

Hollins is entitled to run in a straight line down the court. There is no way, in no circumstances that is a defensive foul.

Well, despite that hiccup at the end of the half...

Jonny’s not forcing things. Sessions looks fabulous. Al is as springy and explosive as he’s been post-injury. Love is the hyper-productive possession machine we hoped for. Good things from the Wolves in the first half.

Jonny's not forcing things?

Except bad “heat check” 3’s, behind the back spin-o-rama dribbles off his feet, and Bassy-like passes to teammates with 3 seconds on the shot clock.

I know he’s a rookie…I know he’s learning…but he should not be playing these minutes.

"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"

by mutleyil on Dec 4, 2009 8:20 PM CST up reply actions

The heat check 3 was awful.

But the spinorama dribble I didn’t think was him trying to do too much, more just a double team got thrown at him as he tried to hit Hollins for a dunk. He has made a couple nice plays, and my main point was that he isn’t overpenetrating without a safety valve like he tends to do.

But Sessions has been leaps and bounds better tonight, I’ll give you that. If Rambis is serious about winning this game, Ramon will be in for the heavy second-half minutes.

by TSAX on Dec 4, 2009 8:15 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Typical Referee Call

That my friends is what is wrong with the NBA! Favoritism plays way too much in the calls that “star” players and “good” teams get. How can they possibly determine that Hollins fouled Paul. It comes down to who can act better by throwing their hands in the air, falling down without hardly any contact, complaining like a baby to the refs, etc. to get calls and make it look like they drew a foul. This league is beoming more like all-star wrestling. True fans want fair calls – let the best team that day win. The NBA gives some teams a better chance to win and it is getting old.

by killerhoopage on Dec 4, 2009 8:24 PM CST up reply actions

Two thoughts..

Without having seen this particular play.
1) If you remove the defender from the play entirely is the shot something that resembles anything approaching a shot the shooter would actually take? No? Cannot be a foul.
2) Retroactive fines for obvious chicanery – flops, 6 foot sideways launches, ‘accidentally’ getting tangled up running up court, etc. If the whole world sees a player game the system and get rewarded of course that crap will continue, at least make them pay.

Because there are no fours.

Crap!

Forgot to do this at the start…but wanted to see how many of CP3’s assists were legit. Somebody analyzed several games last year and found that he was getting something like 3-4 absurd assists per game – like grabbing a defensive rebound handing it to West who then dribbled all the way up the court through 3 defenders for a layup – and CP3 got an assist.

The Wolves, as of a couple of games back, were down an average of around 4 rebounds a game. Between Love and Jefferson, injuries had turned that team strength into a weakness.

How many times is that?

Lose or not, the handful of times I’ve watched a whole game I am consistently anticipating Rambis’s time outs and substitutions…. Either he’s as mediocre a basketball mind as I am, which possibility I gladly acknowledge, or he makes sense.

I don’t always agree with his rotations, but again, I know why he’s doing things with very few exceptions. He makes sense.

I'm really skeptical of the three point shooting

But if he can do it (and we have a small sample size indicating it might be the case) he is going to be a uniquely valuable player.

Also, what an incredible pass.

Love is waaaayyy more unique and rare than Mayo. We can get a shooter in the draft or free agent.

the wolves..

…have the worst wing play in the league so i guess there’s really no arguing with it. it was just nice to see some improvement from him earlier in the year and it’s kind of been out of nowhere that he’s losing minutes. it’s not like he’s shooting any worse than he was before.

I think we need to accept...

That Corey Brewer is the Wolves Troy Williamson. We were all so eager for him to succeed that we championed support for him after every minor improvement or victory. The bottom line is this: The ball bounces of Corey Brewer’s facemask a lot more than he makes the reception.

Use him as a situational TR Dunn type player for the next year and a half. Then cut him loose…

"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"

by mutleyil on Dec 4, 2009 9:22 PM CST up reply actions

That's harsh.

Brewer at least plays defense and rebounds a little. Williamson had no positive aspects to his game whatsoever.

Although I guess I see the comparison, in that putting either one of them out there on offense is like adding another man to the opponent’s defense.

by Princely Frank on Dec 4, 2009 9:40 PM CST up reply actions

You're right...

Corey does have some D, and you never doubt that he’s trying hard. Whereas Troy was just a lazy bust from Day One.

However, I’ve been rooting for and defending the guy for 3 years. I just can’t do it anymore. The only way he becomes a value-add player on a team is if Popovich gets his hands on him, and turns him into the next Bowen.

"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"

by mutleyil on Dec 4, 2009 9:49 PM CST up reply actions

I can see this.

I’m pulling for Corey as hard as anyone, but at some point you either have it or you don’t. Can anyone really see him learning to convert and shoot well enough to merit his minutes if we get a 2 way wing like Evan Turner?

When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead. True story.

by Xand1 on Dec 5, 2009 12:41 AM CST up reply actions

"Shoot" may as well be "play"

Gomes in this smaller lineup is basically in Love’s position. Corey, well…. Perhaps he can do his disruptive thing from the bench…. Either way minutes for Love are superior to the other options.

Needs to show consistency with the 3

I’m far more looking forward to him getting to the line, rebounding, and making the mid-range shots. I don’t want him to fall in love with the 3 too much.

by Rascal Flatts on Dec 4, 2009 9:24 PM CST up reply actions

A lot to feel positive about tonight...

1. We were competitive
2. KLove is back
3. Those two facts are completely interrelated…

If we can just get Kurt start Sessions, and Love’s presence limit Hollins minutes, we will be a very improved team…

"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"

Yes...

And lacking that, give Wayne more burn. He really seemed to excel with Love on the court tonight. Love’s rebounding and outlets got him a few easy ones early. That really set him up for a confident, good shooting night.

I'd love to see a Sessions/Ellington/Gomes/Love/Al lineup for the next game.

As much as I’d prefer Gomes be the first off the bench at the 4… eh. I’d at least like to see Ellington get a shot to start, especially following a game where he had the third most minutes on the team.

You were a daydreamer, a sass-mouth, and, not infrequently, a bit of a gigglepuss. Somehow I doubt twenty years of amphetamines and failure have done anything to improve that.

Big Al had a nice game too.

I count three players who I consistently want to see out on the floor for this team right now. That’s more than I could say a week ago.

by nextmove on Dec 4, 2009 9:32 PM CST up reply actions

Flynn was clearly frustrated after being pulled late in the game

At what point do we stop the charade and just start Sessions. It’s the fair thing to do for both players.

by Rascal Flatts on Dec 4, 2009 9:33 PM CST up reply actions

Flynn is doing what a rookie PG should be doing...

Making mistakes, looking out of place, making some plays… But playing Sessions is a win-win. If nothing else, his trade value needs to be bolstered. I would love to see Sessions playing for aobut 30 mpg and Flynn for about 20.

by nextmove on Dec 4, 2009 9:36 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not ready to trade Sessions until Flynn shows he belongs in this league

I’m not sure we know what we’ve got yet. The last thing I’d want to see is Sessions traded for a position of need, only to go off an become a perennial 18 and 10 guy.

by Rascal Flatts on Dec 4, 2009 9:55 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed.

During the late-1st/early-2nd quarter run, Sessions looked absolutely fantastic. I think trading him away at this point is a gamble. It’s a 4-year contract. I’d vote to wait at least a year before choosing between them.

by LoveTo on Dec 4, 2009 10:06 PM CST up reply actions

It's a 4-year, very-decent-terms contract

The contrast between Sessions and Flynn right now reminds me some of that between Billups and Brandon the first year they were together here. People groan about the gaffe of letting Billups go, but Brandon really was a very smooth offensive point guard, and you felt it when he was out there. The original Stop-n-Pop got the offense purring a lot of the time, whereas Chauncey was more the explosive raw talent. It was great having them both on the roster, together.

Well, in this case there’s no looming free agency, and the favorable deal with Sessions means there’s little or no salary pressure. The Wolves have the luxury of taking their time and having nice talent at that position for now. No need to get all excited and trade out of it. Rambis just needs to find the right balance: starting, minutes, who plays best with whom, and so on. If you want to make a choice, you can do so on your terms.

For that matter, the glut of PG talent in the last draft means Sessions’ value isn’t getting any extra oomph from exceptional demand. If there’s a sweet exchange to be had in that trade, it’d be next summer anyway.

"It has come to the editor’s attention that the Herald-Leader neglected to cover the civil rights movement. We regret the omission."
