Wizards considering selling 2009 #1 pick
"The team has about $75.9 million committed to contracts for next season, which would put them over the luxury-tax threshold (it typically rises slightly each year but may not go up next year, depending upon league revenue) before signing a lottery pick.
First-year salaries for players taken at the top of the lottery are between $2.7 million and $4.2 million, and that would place the Wizards significantly over the threshold, something Pollin has avoided in the past. Teams that go over the threshold must pay a dollar-for-dollar tax after the season.
But there are other reasons Grunfeld might try to trade the pick. It could allow him to shed an otherwise difficult-to-trade player -- such as Thomas, who is on the books for $7.4 million next season, or James, who holds a player option for $6.5 million next season -- while adding a valuable veteran. "
Forget losing out on the Chandler sweepstakes, if the Wolves aren't the first team on the line something is wrong.

I don’t know – how many first rounders can we absorb next year? It looks like we’re going to have 3 already. Do we have that many open spots and do we want that many guaranteed rookie contracts?
Sure, if we could be assured of being able to package some of them to move up it would make sense but there’s no guarantee that other teams will be looking to do so.

Theoretically...
…they can absorb 5 with the status quo remaining and no re-signs. They have 10 guaranteed deals next year. The Utah pick may not happen so…well, the Wiz suck and we’re likely talking about a top 5 pick.

Hmm...
Already responding to my own post. I didn’t realize the Wizards were the 2nd worst team right now. If this turned into a top 3-5 pick it’s probably worth it. It would impact our cap flexibility though since we’d have to take a contract. That said, I’m not sure how attractive Minny is from a free agent standpoint.
Too bad this upcoming draft isn’t more loaded with players.

Has there ever been a year
when in retrospect there weren’t at least half a dozen world class pros coming out of each new batch of high school and collegiate athletes?
Figuring out which ones are which is the hard part.
2000..
…is as close as it has ever got to being a complete waste:

Coincidently, that was the last draft held at a team’s location…right here in Minneapolis. It was an all around ugly draft. Remember, K-Mart broke his leg before he entered. I think this year’s draft is filled with solid rotational players. It doesn’t have last year’s top end sort of talent, but you can find some guys in the top 10 who can start for a long time.

I cannot even begin to express
How dumb and stupid it would be for the Wizards to actually trade a top-three pick to save money.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
I know...
…it really makes you wonder where the line is on their ledger sheet. If the cap goes down even more, they will be in even more of a pinch.

They could solve all their problems by trading Jamison for Wally Sczcerbiak
Makes you wonder why it hasn’t happened yet.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
I think Cleveland likes what it has....
…but if they don’t move him, they’re in some deep doo-doo. Here’s a comment I posted over at Real GM:
"I didn’t realize how badly the Wizards are over the cap. If the status quo remains, they enter next season with $76 mil in salaries. They could have a top 3 pick which would put them at $80 mil. The current lux tax projection is at $67.5 mil. That’s $12.5 mil in extra lux tax payments, which would put them at $92.5 mil for a s$%tty club with less than 20 wins. By moving James and Thomas, they can take $12 mil off the baseline number. With an addition of Smith, they get a nice young bench player and $10 mil off the mark, which puts them at $66 mil, or below the lux mark. Of course the lux mark could go lower. That would make it even more imperative for them to clear salary. As far as the Wolves are concerned, that money is already out the door and they are below the cap.
Making this deal could end up saving the owner of the team somewhere in the neighborhood $26 .5 mil. That’s not exactly chump change. Even if they get the top pick, is he worth that much? That’s a hard one to argue."
…you’d almost think it would be an imperative to trade Jamison for Wally at this point so they could avoid what is around the corner.

Exactly what I'm saying
It is imperative. Yet Ernie Grunfeld seems content to not take the PR hit and sell Jamison for cap space. He’d rather trade the pick.
Such silly thinking. Cleveland would definitely take Jamison back for Wally.

less get it....
give dem whoever dey want mayn. even…..ahhh mayn cant believe im gon say dis…Mike Miller.
if wecould get der pick den we gettin Rubio and Thabeet and den iss a wrap we gon be de team mayn an everybody in de WORLD gon be screamin MAYNNNNNN HOLLLLL UPPPP
MAYN HOL UP!
Anyone but Love...
…Foye and Jefferson should be offered up for that pick.

If it's a pure salary dump,
Our “expirings” work against their “ones”: Shotty, Cardinal, Booth, and Collins for Thomas and Heywood.
Maybe Glen can throw in the cash he received from Portland for Roy/Foye.
What are you talking about??
Jefferson is a proven star (not superstar) you can’t trade him for a top 5 pick in a down year (or virtually any year). Washington could go on a run when Arenas comes back…. just enough to screw up the pick. Jefferson for Thabeet who just was completely ineffective against 6’8’’ Blair?
I’m glad the wolves aren’t paying Gilbert Arenas massive amounts of money to have injury problems, and are overpaying Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler. The Wizards have to have one of the bleakest looking futures at the moment.
There’s a rumor that Cleveland wants Antawn Jamison, which slightly confuses me.

I just cannot imagine.....
a trade in which the Wizard’s sleeves don’t get hosed selling their first rounder for cap space.
I just cannot believe it will happen.
