Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

I mention this for the following reason: Can you imagine what the reaction would be if Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Shaq were all shown to be drug-using cheats? Somehow, MLB can square the circle even after Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds and A-Rod have been ousted.

Come watch the NBA. The last decade may have been watered down, but at least it wasn't a fraud.

I'd be shocked... SHOCKED

to find out that Ben Wallace, Mike Bibby, LeBron James and/or Amare Stoudemire used steroids.

The attitude to performance enhancing drugs exhibited by

various sporting bodies in the United States is staggering (MLB, USA Athletics particularly).

The answer is simple:

The first ban is for 2 years, the second ban is for life.

That will likely focus some minds.

indeed...

…it’s getting old having to read these stories. They need to put some weight behind the punishments.

Well...

It’s not like this drug test was administered last night. The test was administered in 2003. This particular test was supposed to be part of a survey to determine how wide spread the problem was. Per the agreement between the player’s union and mlb management, the results were never supposed to be made public, and there was no punishment associated with a positive test. Of course, in the Bonds case, these 2003 results were confiscated and were supposed to be under seal. But, the Feds leaked the story — in violation of the law. Shouldn’t there be an investigation of this obvious prosecutorial misconduct? Don’t hold your breath on that one.

Now, though, there’s a 50 game suspension — and you’ll note that there aren’t a lot of suspensions. In other words, either players are beating the test — or the 50 games is an adequate deterrent (not to mention the negative publicity that goes along with it — compare with the NFL where Shawn Merriman tested positive, missed 4 games and made the pro bowl). So, longer suspensions don’t really seem to be necessary.

Plus, I wouldn’t doubt for one second that some players in the NBA are using PEDs.

Do we know that the govt made it public?

I suppose that even things up after all the perjury that took place in front of Congress. ;)

I grew up playing baseball and basketball and baseball was always my first love. The strike moved me away a little and then the steroids nonsense pushed me the rest of the way. I know this was a 2003 test and that he can’t be punished for it. Somehow, to me, that makes it all the more absurd. People knew about it for all this time and they let it go.

I don’t doubt the NBA has its share of users. They don’t disclose what substances lead to suspensions. Ricky Davis was rumored to have used steroids on his suspension. Darius Miles’ suspension was rumored to be steroid related. Only 3 players have been suspended openly for PED…and they all claim it was for “supplements”. I just don’t think it’s widespread. I think it’s safe to say it doesn’t dominate the upper levels of play.

The Evidence is Under Seal

So yeah, should not have been disclosed.

by SBG on Feb 7, 2009 8:43 PM CST up reply actions

50 games

is less than a third of the season. I’d imagine some players would consider that a “price of doing business”.

What is the second penalty?

by Auswolf on Feb 7, 2009 8:58 PM CST up reply actions

100 games, then life for the third

Football’s penalty is four games or 25% of a season.
