Al Jefferson, the Timberwolves' best player, will likely miss the rest of the season with a torn knee ligament. He suffered the injury Sunday night in New Orleans near the end of the Wolves' 101-97 loss to the Hornets.

Thanks Frank
I actually thought of you guys immediately. Redd/Bogut/Ridnour prolly beats Jefferson/Brewer/Ollie.

yeah...
….that’s a tough season across the border. BTW: does this count as being part of the 2nd year Wolves curse?

I hope he takes his time
The only reason to watch this team now is in the hope of seeing a 20pts 20rebound game from Love. This team is going to look very ugly out there

then again...
I’m not saying the team didn’t just suddenly get a whole lot worse…but even if they lose all their games we could be in for some fun ball. I figure the only way they can stay in games right now is to go totally run and gun. In a way, they’re suited for it – they have a bunch of perimeter guys who, even if they’re not elite players, are well suited to open-court play (Telfair, Foye, Carney, McCants…even Miller shooting spot-up 3s); and they have Love grabbing rebounds and making sweet passes from the high post. Oh outlet passes too. Even Smith’s kind of a run-and-gun guy.
Hey, work with me people…I know I’m kind of clutching at straws here (is that the expression?), and I absolutely love Jefferson…but I figure that this will at least open up the middle, McHale should play 9-10 guys a night and adopt the d’Antoni “7 seconds or less” model in my opinion.

Ugh.
I’m just sick about this. Lots of losing coming our way for the rest of the year, but forget that. Our franchise guy has a blown out knee. Stomach punch.

Ugh
Another step backwards for this franchise when there seemed to be light at the end of the tunnel.

Bucks love, and Love
Yes, I can appreciate what Milwaukee is going through. Good bunch of guys, hard-nosed coach, with a fan base that deserves more success than what this season will probably bring.
There is NO REASON to start burdening Kevin Love with 40 minutes a night. The guy is wonderful, but not exactly in triathalon shape (heck, he gets all red and puffy after five straight minutes of burn). Whether the Wolves win 22 games or 42 games this season, the outcome will be the same. We’ve idenitified their strengths, and their weaknesses.
I’m not saying they should tank it to the level of the Mad Dog 3-Point Chucker Experience, but l hope McHale doesn’t exhaust what few assets he has left.

Good News - Bad News
Good news – The Wolves are still in need of high end talent. It may be better to lose more games this year and get a better draft position anyway.
Bad news – This will definitely let Kevin McHale off the hook for whatever results we might have the rest of the year. One would expect that he can point to the January surge and the Big Al injury to claim he was successful, even if they were to lose a large majority of upcoming games.

F***…man this is bad, hope Jefferson’s doing OK, here’s hoping for a speedy recovery for him. Sucks that it comes right at this time, what a tear he’d been on. Best of luck with the recovery Al.
I think PoorDick makes a good point too, I hope Love doesn’t start getting ridiculous minutes. Let’s keep a nice 3-man rotation with Love, Smith (when he gets back…when is that anyways? maybe he’s out for a while too?), and Collins or someone.
by plinytheelder on Feb 9, 2009 3:29 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Best of Luck on the recovery Big Al!
With Smith also out…Maybe we finally see 7 foot Calvin Booth get more minutes.

35 minutes
Zogda is saying Love has been told he’ll be getting 35+ minutes a night.
I thought it and knocked on wood so I’ll type it: Let’s hope K-Love doesn’t get hurt.
But, wait it’s only his first year. The injuries happen in the second year. My bad.
I’m excited about seeing a few more 5-20 shooting nights from Randy Foye and I’m hoping Kevin Love has been working on his jump shot. Should be quite the ride.
Also did anyone else see Mark Cuban’s post about Dallas’ player rankings?
Randy Foye is ninth in the league, Telfair is 22nd.
What the hell?
Although I think that incorporating variance is extremely important. Are current formulas doing this? For example, Foye’s January + Feb stats might look a certain way, but it’s information that he was hot in early in Jan and then cold after. There must be guys that are more consistent.

Get Dallas on the phone ASAP
Mark Cuban might want those guys! Let’s see what he’ll give the wolves!
by DR_JPK on Feb 9, 2009 6:10 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Cuban's numbers are...um...interesting.
I can’t make heads or tails of them, but…Foye 9th? Telfair 22nd? Matt Bonner in the top 30!
He does say he’s been working on the system for 8 years, so I’m assuming he’s dead serious…
Any of the more number-fluent people care to comment? I’d be interested to hear what someone who knows more about this stuff thinks. Here’s the link.

Just from a cursory glance, and I'm not a statistical expert by any means
it appears that an incredibly large percentage of their analysis is based on players deemed consistent by their system (AKA low variance), like Cuban said. I originally thought the list seemed to include a lot of good defenders, but the inclusion of Bonner, Telfair, and Nash ruined that thought.
I’m not sure I really like the system. First, being clutch is quite easily shown in the raw stats, like points per fourth quarter and percentage of game winning shots hit.
It seems like they’re trying to create a system that judges how consistent players are in the stretch of games. My question is, how are Brandon Roy and Deron Williams not on that list, then? Both are very efficient in the fourth quarter, much more than other guys on the list.
I guess, in the end, it’s more of a coaching critique, than a player evaluation system. Odom, Millsap, Okur, etc. are all put into great positions to succeed by their coach. I still don’t understand why Aldridge and Okur are ranked highly, while it’s Roy and Williams that command their teams down the stretch. I also dislike that this system doesn’t seem to take into account points per shot (PPS). PPS is one of the best indicators of a consistent scorer. If the player gets to the foul line, they are by nature less likely to endure a slump, as many of their points are freebies.
By the way, Mark, averages are not meaningless…

Trade idea - wolves cap space
Wolves get Jason Kidd and his huge expiring contract
Dallas gets Telfair, Miller, Cardinal, McCants
by DR_JPK on Feb 9, 2009 6:16 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
their rankings have Jason Kidd as the second most valuable player, so they probably want to keep him.

McCants
If ever there was a green light for him, this is it. The second best guy on this team at creating his own shot is Shaddy. We need points to come from somewhere and with Miller unwilling to be a volume shooter and with most others simply unable to create shots for themselves, this is his last chance.
Run and gun spread offense baby:
C – Love
PF – Gomes
SF – Miller
SG – Foye
PG – Telfair
6th man – McCants
7th man – Carney
8th man – Pops Menah-Bonsu (sign him!)
9th man – Cardinal

Big al is also getting a lot of love at Celticsblog. Maybe we’re weird, but we’re actually looking forward to the day that we regret giving up Al. Here is hoping Al gets healthy and the Twolves get another good draft pick
