Changes in the Draft Order Worth Noting

I can't believe I missed it, but Utah's play as of late (9 of their last 10) has put them into the top 23 teams in the league, which in turn means that the Timberwolves currently own the Jazz's pick.

Other significant changes include:

  • Oklahoma City traded the lesser of Denver and San Antonio's 1st rounders to Chicago for Thabo Sefolosha
  • Memphis acquired Orlando's 1st round pick for Kyle Lowry (in a trade that also included Houston, Rafer Alston and Brian Cook)

Aldrich...

was a beast yesterday against Missouri. I hope he comes out and the Wolves can nab him. A perfect basketball and marketing synergy!

agreed...

…..I really hope the Wolves land him. Much more so than Thabeet. If he comes out, I don’t think he lasts until the Heat pick however.

No way does Aldrich last at this point to the Miami pick...

This is a weak draft and his stellar play of late projects him to be a very solid, albeit unspectacular, Center prospect that can anchor a defense by controlling the D-boards, clogging the lane, and getting some deflections with that long wingspan. He should easily be gone within the first 12 picks or so.

realized it might be helpful to list who DX has at those picks right now, and some other notables

6 – Al-Farouq Aminu
17 – DeJuan Blair
23 – Darren Collison
29 – Tyler Hansbrough
44 – Tyrese Rice
47 – Josh Heytvelt

these were updated on 2/28, and don’t take team needs into account

money

Maybe the financial crisis will help the wolves here. Do the salary slots continue post lottery? If so, some teams might want to trade down from low lottery to heat pick just so save $500,000 or so. Or they might trade a high first round pick for a late first and a second.

It looks like the main candidates would be
Chicago (13)
Indiana (12)
New Jersey (11)
Philadelphia (14)
New York (9)

The Knicks would do it if we took back a bad contract, but that might be painful.
We’ll have to see how the draft order shakes out.

it probably won't hurt or help...

….to move up a few spots just to save money. The big problem is that these are guaranteed slots in the late 1st. The Utah and Boston picks could be for guys that won’t work out and with guaranteed money. Ick.

FYI

The rookie scale salaries are “set” here: http://nbpa.com/cba_exhibits/exhibitB.php

The catch is that 1st round scale salary amounts can be for 80% – 120% of the “set” value and are usually at the 120% end.

Also, remember that only the first two seasons are guaranteed on these contracts.

So, the number one pick is guaranteed $4,983,480 plus $5,357,280 (at 120%)

And the #30 pick is guaranteed $989,040 plus $1,063,200 (again, at the 120% level)

with the cost factor in mind, i think the draft pick value article over at 82games (http://www.82games.com/barzilai1.htm) is worth reading when considering how to move around draft picks.\

Maybe

They can pull a Vikings and just forget to make a couple picks until other teams pass them by?

It might make some sense...

… in light of this conundrum (you’re absolutely right on the bust potential of these late guaranteed players) to spend a late 1st on someone who is not committed to coming over to the US right away?

Can you imagine having those 6 picks last year … woah.

Just 2 lottery and one early 2nd should be the goal here I think.

Just our friggin' luck....

that we get 4 picks in a draft like this. Let’s hope that Pekovic chip is worth something someday because it’s possible that could pay big dividends down the line based on his play in Europe this season. Right now he probably has more potential value to us than anything beyond our lottery pick in this year’s draft.

by Rascal Flatts on Mar 2, 2009 5:59 PM CST up reply actions

Brian Cardinal the key

his expiring deal will the second most valuable chip and the one we will be most keen to move. Using Cardinal means we don’t end up matching salaries with a horse choker of a contract, as we might if we used Miller who makes $9.8 mil next season.

I think the answer is looking to trade expirings for longer deals and/ or our second round picks for future first rounders. Can’t imagine that a team wouldn’t want to take one (or even two uncommitted looks in exchange for a future first (and no guaranteed money).

Ideally the Utah pick is deferred until next year or beyond (although we would definitely get it next year unless Utah fell in a staggering hole)

BTW:

I think they should go the Wiz route and offer up Cardinal + 2 2nd rounders and Pekovic if that Wiz pick is still in the top 3 (+ Etan Thomas).
