How did you develop your powerful inside game?

"When I started playing basketball in Montenegro, they made me a center and I never played any other position. They realized I had the size and I think that I am naturally strong, so the power game is natural for me, too. Along the way, I learned some moves and a couple of other things. Then in the last couple of years, it all came together and I showed I can do the same things at a high level."

Interview with Nikola Pekovic as he and Panathinaikos get ready for the Euroleague Final Four.

In 19 games this year, Pekovic has averaged 18.3 minutes, 13 points on 64% FG%, 76% FT, 3.9 rebounds, .7 blocks and 2.2 turnovers.

Pekovic Update (11/19)

It annoys me that many people compare him to Al Jefferson. We would be blessed if Jefferson was near as aggressive as Pekovic is. If anything, Al plays more of a euro style with the moves and finesse and Pekovic has more of an American style with the power and anger.

Going off YouTube clips...

which is obviously a terrible judge. Pekovic looked to be the same size and similar athletically to Jefferson. Also he seemed to fundamentally be a guy who scored off low post moves.

I guess temperament could be said to be different but when Jefferson is really amped he seems angry (hard to stay amped on a 20 win team year after year).

Am I just dead wrong in those characterizations?

Agreed

Pekovic is pretty much an alien in the European basketball panorama. I mean, there are plenty of power players, but they generally aren’t very good. He’s more similar to Craig Smith (stylistically – Pekovic, while having limited moves, is better executing them, especially when contested) than to Big Al.

Pekovic

I can’t make any definitive judgements as to his game. What I can go off is Draft Express made that exact comparsions which is a website that generally makes very thoughout judgements on players game.

They might be simplistic in just assuming that someone’s who is a terrific low-post scorer with poor defensive tools is similar to Jefferson. They also seem similar in that Pekovic doesn’t have a reputation as a great passing big.

Quotes

Do you know this quote?

If you make one or two, suddenly you’re down 15 and 20 on the scoreboard. Some of these teams are just loaded. Barcelona has a huge team of big guys. And then comes Panathinaikos and their young center, Pekovic. He hit me once and it was like getting hit by a train. He’s a big boy. I said to him, “How much you weigh?” and he said, “Too much”. And he was right.

Not sure if it is meant to be a fat comment. I have heard numerous people say how crazy strong he is. Not just strong, but scary strong. Maybe that could be what they are hinting at?

Yeps

He’s not “fat”, Obradovic wouldn’t allow it. He’s just very strong and big – even for NBA standards, let alone in Europe. Plus, he loves to throw his body around and hit people. Very physical player.

So did Igor Rakocevic

He freakin’ led the league in scoring! Apparently for the 2nd time in 3 seasons. WTF???
