Owner Glen Taylor, interviewed at halftime of Minnesota's 110-87 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Sunday night at Target Center, said he still expects Kevin McHale to return as coach next season but that McHale hasn't told him he would.
Taylor also said the team will have a general manager-type to head up basketball operations, ending the committee-style approach it has used in recent seasons.
"We're going to have one person that will be at the top," Taylor said. "We've interviewed quite a few people."
Asked if that person will come from inside or outside the organization, Taylor said: "We're interviewing inside and outside. I'd say we're pretty much done with it."

Taylor...
is a dumbass. WHY would he want him back?!?!
If McHale coaches next year, it will alienate fans to a degree they haven’t even seen yet. Good luck with that Taylor.

At least he’s looking for a new GM. That’s way more important since I still think McHale isn’t that bad of a coach. How many coaches would win games with the current injured roster? Honestly?
Yes, I get that there’s the history from his GM days but still … I’ve liked a lot of the stuff he’s been doing of late and I still wanna give the guy a shot at coaching .. not because he deserves it but because I think he’d do a good job.

I don’t know whether this news should be exciting or absolutely terrifying.

The only way this is good news
is if it means that they’ve found someone for GM who is still on staff at a relevant team, and are waiting until that team’s season is over to announce the agreement.
McHale goes, or I go. I get that he’s not the worst coach in the world (I saw THAT guy in the first part of the season). I get that no coach could win with this roster. But with a young team, lots of picks, cap room, and a sagging economy, the Wolves need to close the book on McHale as soon as possible, and start a new chapter.
It’’s not about wins, losses, effort, or even “chemistry” at this point. It’s about “hope.” Hope that the team will sign a starter via free agency. Hope that the team will trade the expiring contracts for another starter. Hope that the team will luck out and find an eventual starter in this year’s draft. Hope that this new talent will move 3 of the 5 starters from this year to the bench, where they most definitely belong.
All of the above Hopes are not only possible, they are likely, as long as Glen puts his money where his mouth is and takes advantage of the general (and other teams’) economic malaise to grab players who are good, but unaffordable to their current team at the current salary. And if the front office actually gets on a plane to go watch a college player play, rather than waltzing across town to watch Villanova play Coppin State in the Regional round of the NCAAs.
Without Hope, at this point $5 is too much to pay to watch this team play. Let alone the two hours of time, plus the off-game time spent caring about the team.

I for one
am encouraged. For once, he is showing that he knows, that the current management situation can not continue. Papa Glen has Said that ,while he would like McHale back as a Coach, he will not come back as teh GM. That is really good news, and will probably result in McHale not coming back next year in a way that allows McHale to save face.
I do agree with Wym though, if McHale does come back as the coach would not be a disaster. I don’t think any one could win with this lineup, much more important then a new coach next season will be to have a good GM in place. I would put a great deal of emphasis on finding a GM who has a pedagree for talant evaluation, if we are going to turn this around we need someone who can find the gems in the draft, as we are likely to be drafting in the lottery at least one more time.

I hope beyond hope that they bring in someone from outside
to be the GM—that’s an absolute necessity. But do we want to saddle that person with McHale? Wouldn’t the best candidates want the opportunity to hire his own coach?
It’s classic Papa Glen—unable to quite let go.

No doubt
If PG does hire someone from outside with actual credibility and respect around the league, then McHale’s good as gone. If you were the new GM, would you want to tell the old GM/coach that their choices weren’t good and these are the guys you really want? Or would you rather bring in your own guys and begin the process of gutting the institutional crapitudes of this franchise (a la the AZ Cardinals) and remolding it into a real NBA franchise?

I still think McHale's going to make this easy for all of us...
And give it up. That’s obviously optimistic and not based on any reports, but this isn’t front office work, which requires fewer road trips. Either way, I don’t see him coaching for more than two more years. I still want him out immediately. Let him crack jokes on a broadcasting team so people don’t think he’s as much of a pariah. The main reason Taylor won’t fire him is because he took the hit on the Joe Smith deal and Taylor feels indebted to him in some way.

I think this is what happens as well
I still am holding out hope that this was the decision made at the Wittman firing and that this whole season has been merely a way to let PG let McHale go gracefully into the sunset.

It will probably be from Outside
I say this, not because it is what I hope for, but based on Glenns statement that he is basically done interviewing people. If he was going to hire from within, I would think they would have announced it already. being doen interviewing means a choice has been made, and if he is within, he can be singed and take the position at any time during the season, if he is from outside, then we have to waite until the end of the regular season, if not the playoffs. So, yea, I think it is coming form outside based on those comments.

how in the hell...
has Glen Taylor managed to interview current front office people in winning organizations and there has been not a peep about it in the press? I hope the new GM isn’t announced too soon after the season, for that likely means the wolves are grabbing someone from a non-playoff team. Maybe Glen will buy out Mike Dunleavy’s contract from the Clippers.
I have very little hope until the decision is announced. How could he have interviewed anyone from San Antonio, Houston, Portland, etc. without it being written about? Maybe the man is just sneaky…

i was kind of hoping...
….for a few follow up questions on this front. the article doesn’t really seem to address that obvious question. Do they need to receive permission to talk to someone currently with a team? Did they receive permission? This would narrow the field by quite a bit.

yeah
this seems like lazy New York Times wmd type reporting. Well, Mr. Taylor said it, no need for any follow up questions or any sort of investigative reporting.

McHale as the coach for this team going forward would be fine, if we didn’t have all these picks and “potential” free agents coming in. I was sure very hopeful that this season would be it for McHale as much as he complained about travel at the beginning of this. So the new GM gets to hire his own coach. My question is, Who would be willing to come in and coach this bunch of misfits players?
Sometimes the obvious is hidden.

I'm fine with...
… McHale staying on as coach, as long as he has little or no say in personnel decisions (especially the draft picks). But my guess is that he won’t stick around. I believe that if Jefferson hadn’t gone down and the Wolves continued to play decent ball for the rest of the season, McHale might have been convinced to coach another year or two. But I think the only way he stays now is if Taylor begs him to do so (and keeps reminding him of all those draft picks).
