And Your New GM is
Tom Penn. Zgoda:
From everything I’m hearing, Tom Penn is signed, sealed and delivered (or at least completely agreed to, give me some poetic license for the Stevie Wonder reference). I’m guessing a Tuesday press conference, just hours before the team learns its draft lottery fate.
I’m still not completely positive the McHale situation is decided. I’d think they’d want to do this once, call a press conference and lay out their new head guy, new top personnel guy (Hoiberg) and their coaching situation.
But knowing the Wolves they could announce Penn and Hoiberg with their new titles and say the coaching situation is TBD by the new boss
Quick ed note: Hats off to Jerry for being all over this story. He's done some fantastic work on this one.

Hopefully a good start!
At least we finally got things going and with outside management, too. They really need to wrap this thing up by Tuesday to start focusing on the draft.
Good news on Penn...
Sounds like a great choice from everything we’ve heard. Maybe this will bring us some Lottery luck for the first time ever. Won’t hold my breath…
BTW, anyone want to bet that the NY Knicks end up with the 2nd pick? I guarantee the NBA will do whatever it takes to get Rubio to New York to play for D’Antoni…
"I'm gonna make you cry...I'm gonna make you cry and dip my cookie in your tears!!!"
I think the bigger conspiracy theory
is OKC winning it to get Griffin. They have decent odds at getting it, but that’s the one the NBA wants, I’d think.
Even if we win, it’s still in one of the most crappy draft ever. So even if we get lucky it’s still unlucky that we got lucky in a bad draft …

Odds on HC change?
What’s Hoopus collective take on McHale stepping down or staying?
I have absolutely no solid info to base this on, just hunches, hopes, and hazarding guesswork, but I can see McHale’s future playing out one of two ways:
1. He leaves. Papa Glen won’t pay him a rich multi-year deal, Penn gets crafty and maneuvers negotiations to make resigning McHale unpalatable and the Thibadoeu (sp?) era begins.
or
2. McHale stays, in some sort of capacity. McHale likes working with the players, and Penn seems like a pretty adaptable guy—someone who looks at his hand and says “I know how to get the most of this”, and so it’s a good fit, at least for a year.
Or Penn talks to McHale, they voice their respective opinions and thoughts about the future of the franchise and McHale’s role in it, and McHale agrees to step down as Head Coach but stay on as a special big-man coach, only responsible for helping our big guys when they’re here (no traveling or bench sitting required).
My gut suspicion is that McHale genuinely does like working with the players, especially Big Al and KLove, and that he would love to be able to continue doing that. I don’t think that will happen as HC, tho, as the whole rich, multi-year contract thing seems like a really funny move on McHale’s part. He’s operated on a handshake agreement for almost two decades now, and suddenly he wants multi-year bank? It’s either a smokescreen to give Glen a reason to say no to him, or the real McHale just stood up and wants his money if he doesn’t get to call the shots anymore.
The only way McHale stays on for an extra year is if Penn really, really wants him to, or if there’s really no other coach out there for the franchise and McHale does one last service to the franchise and buys them another year so they can get the coach they really want.
So, to cap it all off, I say odds of McHale staying (if they announce something by tomorrow) are 15%, 51% if we get one of the top 2 picks.
A coach with no contract
Really doesn’t work with the players.
I think it helps to think that a coach has a long term contract and that they are all in it together. McHale may recognize this and, I’m sure, that is part of the pitch to Taylor. But, I agree, he is probably asking for three year deal for his own protection and why not? That’s what coaches get for agreeing to the demands of being a head coach that can be fired on a whim (or at least a losing streak).
I am hearing
McHale will stay on as coach, 3 year contract, market rate salary ($3-4M/year – a BIG increase for McHale) with buyout provisions (both directions) each year.
If they team has a good year, expect McHale to volunteer to leave after cashing one big check knowing that the new guys have something to work with. He will stay on as a “player development consultant”.
If the team has a poor year – McHale will be bought out and end his association with the team.
I think he stays..
…and they announce the multi-year contract at the same time as the Penn hiring. Anything that keeps this squad from having a guy like Avery Johnson or Sam Mitchell is good by me. These guys are just different types of Randy Wittman. All three of them would be much better served in the college game where that sort of shtick carries more weight. McHale seems to have the makings of a very good NBA coach. I really don’t think they could do much better anywhere else now that Flip is gone.

I think Thibodeau...
….is like a life-long defensive coordinator in the NFL. He’s a defensive assistant and that’s where he’s most effective. I’m sure he has the mind for it but the thing that worries me about guys like that is that they must have some sort of temperament that has prohibited them from being at the head of the bench if they’ve been in the game for so long doing so well.
The World's Leading Exporter of Small Area Quickness

The sad part of that
is that I bet Monte Kiffin would have made a fine head coach, if anyone had ever given him the chance before “he’s too old” became the excuse to not hire him.

That's assuming
He wanted to be? I love that guy, but my impression was that he looked upon the DC job as the destination, not a stepping stone to an HC job.
Cap Space 2010
This will be the key thing for the New GM in the next year. I see three possible solutions
1. Assume a Bad Contact beyond 2010 for a draft pick.
The best example I can think of along these lines is:
To MN:
Eddy Curry/Number 8
To NY:
Brian Cardinal/Mark Madsen/Number 18
This seems to be a weak option considering the nature of the draft. Although if you like a wing/guard equally on draft night- it would have to be considered.
Another example would be something with the Wizards like:
To MN:
Number 2 Pick
Darius Songalia
Deshawn Stevenson
To Was:
Brian Cardinal
Mark Madsen
Number 5
This will have to occur on Draft Night 2009 or the option seems to be out the window.
Number 2-Free Agency
This seems to be where the Foye fear comes in. The Wolves decide they need to spend Cap Space so they reup Foye for around 10 Million- Per Year.
Their are certainly attractive players that can be signed: The King, Wade, Bosh, Rondo, Roy, J. Johnson.
My concern would be the players worth max-money will never come here. So if this is your strategy considering the Majority of teams are trying like crazy to clear cap-space then you’re asking for a diaster contract signing. The one benefit is that this has some possibilities to pursue some sign and trade possibilities.
3. Trade expirings for longer-term players. The best example would be the proposed Kirk Hinrich trade around the trade deadline. The problems with trades such as these are in all probablity the players you acquire are going to be:
A. Overpaid (Kirlilenko, Kirk Hinrich)
B. Injury-Prone (Monta Ellis/Luol Deng)
So I can see why this doesn’t really excite people. I’m not sure what the best course of action really would be. Perhaps someone with more creativity has some ideas on how to use this cap space. I’m glad we have Tom Penn on board for such a task as this.
Sign and trade
I think this is the best, and most likely, avenue for 2010. We have assets, the economy won’t have rebounded enough to ease the pain for some/most teams, and there’s always the random team who goes on fire-sale mode that we can’t imagine right now (Gasol to the Lakers? What?!)
Also, I think our attractiveness to other free agents depends a lot on how this year’s draft works out, and how the coaching situation works out. This team has been a mess since KG left, and assuming we can find some quality talent in the draft (and even FA this year) and get some coaching quality on the bench, we suddenly might become a whole lot more attractive to the 2010 guys: a strong young team needing just one more superstar piece in a weakening Western Conference (Spurs=old, Lakers=getting old, Jazz=no Boozer, Denver=aging Chauncey/KMart). If we can sell that to a 2010 guy, then I think we’ll find takers.
I'm going to predict...
…a Bulls trade that involves Hinrich, Thomas and the teams swapping top 1st rounders. Some combo of Smith, Miller, and Cardinal go back the other way.
The World's Leading Exporter of Small Area Quickness
www.canishoopus.com
Too much salary to help Chicago
Blake and cash and 2010 second round pick Bulls (back) and another draft pick for Hinrich. Blazers have the cap space to do it. Chicago gets a big trade exception and a player they can use. That’s it.
See: First conflict of interest :)
RUMINT...
…has it that Chicago wants to move up into the top 10. They take the cap hit for a single year to get expiring contracts while getting rid of their extra guard, troublesome athletic marvel, and picking up Dejuan Blair. The Wolves move down in a weak draft (maybe even picking up a 2010 pick) and draft the backup point they need while getting a guard to pair with Foye and some much needed front court athleticism. If the Wolves end up with the 6th or lower pick I could definitely see them wanting to trade out of that spot. Face it, Hinrich is destined for Minny whether we like it or not ;) He’s an Iowegan and the Wolves would like nothing more than to collect all of the upper midwest players this side of Illinois.
The World's Leading Exporter of Small Area Quickness
www.canishoopus.com
I see the thought process
Thomas would be the type of rangy defender you could play with Love/Jefferson. At the same time he would hopefully develop the perimeter skills to provide minutes for you at the 3. So you could have a good fit here. I am concerned that he’ll be a RFA after 2010. So I wonder if this makes him moving down 10 spots in the draft this year. I realize the draft isn’t strong but at the same time players like Curry/Derozan would have pretty nice long-term value for the team. I’m not opposed by any means to trading the pick- I’m just not sure I’m loving this scenario.

Perhaps a Three Way trade Involving 18
To Tor:
Number 16
Number 18
Chicago Future 1st
To MN:
Tyrus Thomas
Kirk Hinrich
To Chi:
Brian Cardinal
Number 9
Mark Madsen
Criag Smith
For Raptors:
Move down 7 spots and pick up another mid-first. They’re probably looking at a long-term rebuild when Bosh bolts. So a future first helps along these lines here.
For Bulls:
Create about 10 Million in 2010 Cap Space along with adding a Top 10 pick for players that aren’t great fit at this time.
For Wolves:
They give up only expirings and the 18th pick in a weak draft for two players of value.

You're one of the sharpest posters on this board
(and that’s saying something), but all three of those scenarios (scenaria?) made me throw up in my mouth. Not just the “gurgle in the throat” variety, either, but the kind where you put your hand over your lips to contain it, which then of course only causes highly-pressurized vomit to spew for several feet in several different directions.
Other than maybe Hinrich, none of those other events are going to occur, and although I want the team to get better, I’m happy that none of the events will occur.
Glen wants to first, lose no money. Second, get better. That would be the case in a “normal” economy, but it’s even more true now. Foye isn’t getting any $10 mill per year, but they will need to meet the minimum salary for next year (as I understand it, it’s around $40 million, but there’s no penalty for going under it).
So they’ll MAYBE offer somebody the MLE to play PG (Ramon Sessions?) if they don’t get Rubio (or maybe Curry). They could also sign-and-trade for MWilliams. More likely: they’ll draft an SG with the first pick, a PG with the second pick, trade/sell the third pick, and get a Euro in the 2nd round. Then they’ll wait to see how the rookies do, how well AlJeff and CBrew come back from injury, and see what gets thrown at them at the trading deadline.
When 2010 rolls, around, they’ll have a much better idea as to how the individuals work together, and how the new coach/GM work as well. Then, and only then, might they add a real piece, but it will still more likely be a pretty good player, rather than a very good one. And it wil be for much less money than he could have recieved if hesigned a contract in, say, 2006.
I'm not suggesting any such moves
1. I’m actually not totally opposed to the Curry move. You’d have quite a bit of Cap Space in 2011 and be able to add a wing and a PG in the Top 10. Perhaps a Derozan/Curry combo.
2. The Foye figure was thrown out to be more overdramatic than anything. He’s maybe worth an investment at the mid-level. I was never recommending this as a course of action. My main point was that if you don’t get your top Free Agent target- just don’t waste money on medicore players.
3. It should be pointed out depending on how bad a contract you assume- Kirlilenko (Although he’s a great fit at the 3) you probably can acquire other assests.
by Jose Cordoba on May 18, 2009 10:42 AM CDT up reply actions
Whew!
Okay, but don’t scare me like that.
The only player who is going to get a new over-ten-million per year payday from the Wolves is (maybe) going to be Kevin Love. Cap space, schmap space—this team is going into serious Econo-mode.
“Don’t waste money on mediocre players”—ask around: Randy Foye epitomizes a mediocre player. Nice guy, but he is what he is (but maybe Penn can swap him back to Portland for Roy, as long as Glen throws in a million bucks).
I don't think they'll do...
Anything asinine with the cap space. If Penn is hired, he’ll be strong in that area, and Taylor and Hoiberg (if he stays on) will likely remember that the team had to eat three deals (Griffin, Hudson, Howard) and needed to do a lot of other maneuvering just to get to this point.
As for trading expirings, I think they need to look for a Billups-type situation: a guy who hasn’t lived up to expectations but would come at a decent price and isn’t wanted by his current team. (Ray Felton might fit this bill.) They should also consider waiting until an actual All-Star (or potential All-Star) comes on the market and just signing good players to reasonable deals until that time (who they could add to sweeten a deal).

You're probably right
I’m only really looking at current possibilities. The problem is wait too long- example Summer 2010- you’re looking for some bad scenarios to come down the line.
by Jose Cordoba on May 18, 2009 10:43 AM CDT up reply actions
True...
But they’re only bad if impulsive decisions are made. Cap space is only a problem if it’s not being spent appropriately. I think making moves this year would result in getting better players at a lower price.

Happy guy
THis is very good news. My preference all along was to have Lance Blanks..but that wasnt in the cards. Penn is a better choice from cap standpoint and i dont mind having Hoiberg stay on either for talent. We have to know who’s got final say though.
I also am one of the few who doesnt mind seeing how McHale can do with one more year and training camp under his belt. I really didnt mind him as a coach. Just cuz he made some bad moves as a GM doesnt mean he cant coach. Whether or not he should be ALLOWED to coach is a different question…
Oh for the love of god. Who’s even left now? Kahn seems to be out of the picture, which seems to leave a Hoiberg internal promotion as the only option. So much for fresh eyes if this is the case. I was really looking forward to an outside candidate. I guess the old adage about things being too good to be true is correct yet again.
Well if that truly is the case
why not find an up and comer and take a roll of the dice. Scour the other teams for low level GM assistants and make one a GM.. I would suggest you start with San An. They knock out great GM after GM. If Lindsey is too high, hire one of his assistants.
Or hire Simmons and be relevant again.

In coming years..
I hope they explore basing the lottery odds on number of wins instead of position in the standings. To me, it doesn’t make sense that a 24-win team has half the chance of moving up as a 22-win team. It might also remove the incentive for the worst teams to tank, because position wouldn’t matter as much.
