MVN Outsider Mock Draft
I took part in MVN's Outsider mock draft where bloggers from all over the NBA blogosphere get together and give their best guess as to who their favorite team will select.
While I think everyone who reads this site knows who I would like to see the Wolves draft, this article details who I think they will eventually end up picking should they keep the #6 pick: Tyreke Evans.
In terms of Wolves realism, I think Evans at 6 barely beats out trading Curry to the Knicks for the rights to Jonny Flynn + $1,000,000.

A good representation
of Wolves fans by you. Thank you—maybe people will think we’re smart.
Based on the Kahn Man’s comments, though, predicating a draft pick on Randy Foye doesn’t seem likely (much less “smart”). Not only is “man, is this roster crappy” the truth, but it serves Kahn’s interests and gives him that much more time and tools to make an impact.
That said, whenever you’re trying to guess which way the Wolves will go on a move, take the one that costs them the least money.
My Hope
is that Kahn’s mention of the need for more shooters indicates that they could take Curry at 6. I also tend to share your concern that he could be picked before then. Although thier is no drafting philosophy to really point too. I think we’re probably be as confused 2 weeks from tonight.
you’d rather have tyreke evans than jonny flynn and $1M? i’d rather have flynn than evans straight up (though i think curry is probably the best call for the wovles).

I'd rather have...
….Curry and be done with it but the folks at MVN asked me to write about what I thought would happen…not so much as what I would want to have happen.

yeah, i saw that in the article (and would be disappointed if i were a wolves fan), but was more commenting on you saying that evans was a slightly preferable situation than flynn and one million dollars in a trade with the knicks.

I'd be for the million dollars
if Taylor let the Wolves fans split it. Wolves bloggers and their loyal readers, maybe?
Since that seems unlikely to happen, I’d like to see us draft whoever will be the best player. Once I get my time machine working, I’ll let you know who that is.

Maybe with our million dollars
We can get Oliver Miller back, aka “The O-zone”. He was a big man who could pass—and collect passes. Just throw it in there and somehow he’d snatch it out of traffic. Who cares what happened after that? Solves our big man problems.

Draft Express Podcast
1. Givony really seems confident the Wolves are in love with Tyreke Evans.
2. Thinks Rubio ends up in Sac-Town, very little confidence he’s going to the Grizzles.
3. Says Dajuan Blair’s health is scaring teams off- but that Indiana would take him.
4. Thinks Curry goes either 5, 6, or 7
5. Flynn is flying up the Draft Boards.
apologies in advance if you end up with evans. maybe it’s just me, but i do not see what the fuss is about with him.
i’m very interested to see how the rubio situation plays out. best draft subplot right now and it revolves around the guy who i think might be the best player in this draft. there should be a line a mile long to pry him away from memphis if they aren’t interested.
indiana would be crazy to take blair as high as they are. crazy.
if curry’s going 5, 6, or 7 and the wolves are likely to grab evans, do they mention how much the wizards like curry? would they grab him over harden or hill if they were there? i’d be a very happy man if the warriors got harden because curry is climbing so high. i don’t know how likely it is, but i’d be very pleased. i’d be slightly less pleased with curry and i really like his game. flynn would be good for me too. glad he’s getting some looks as high as he is.
i should probably just give the podcast a listen for myself.

It has to be..
….Curry at this point. I think Evans and Holiday are going to have problems at the next level while guys like Curry and Flynn are going to have success. Curry because of his shooting, B-Ball IQ, and all around efficiency; Flynn because of his handle, speed, and athleticism. I don’t want to call them “big and dopey” because they’re NBA quality athletes, but Holiday and Evans certainly have a relative big and dopeyness going on compared to the other guards in this draft.

Evans reminds me too much of John Salmons to project him to be much more than a serviceable rotation player. If we draft him I’ll cross my fingers and hope for the best, but both he and DeRozan have huge red flags that really worry me. They’re like the anti-Curry. He’s built around a translateable skill and bball smarts but has average size/quickness etc., while they’re all size/strength/power with questionable skills.
As a reality check...
Would it be a major failure if the 6th pick turns into John Salmons? Hopefully it would happen faster than it did for Salmons, but realistically, as much as we want a star with that pick, and need a star with that pick, is that something we can expect?
I’m not stumping for Evans particularly, there are guys I’d rather have. But I think we have to keep our expectations reasonable here. Evans might be great, he’s more likely to be Salmons (though I don’t really see the similarities). Curry might be great, he’s more likely Hubert Davis.

I agree with you.
If we come away with a good starter, not an all-star, but a consistent NBA starter, this draft will be a success.
Blake Griffin
likes Curry more than anybody else (other than himself, of course):
Jeremy (Rochester, NY): In your opinion, who is the best player besides yourself in the draft?
Blake Griffin: Stephen Curry
And so does Andre Ig:
Andre Iguodala was on ESPN First Take yesterday and he said he thinks Stephen Curry is the best player in the draft – primarily because of his high basketball IQ
Of course, that could also be a reflection on how craptacular the rest of the players are.
ESPN has Evans’s similarity as Stackhouse, and Curry’s as Mike Bibby. Stackhouse wouldn’t be bad, but Bibby would be better. My personal worry is that Evans is more like J.R. Rider.
This supports my point.
I don’t see Curry becoming an all-star caliber player. I think his ceiling is a consistent starter, with a floor being a scoring 6th man off the bench.
If we land a consistent productive starter in this draft, I will be very happy.
Curry is going to be a stud..
….and I think the Wolves will be lucky to get him at 6 at this point. I think he has a huge ceiling in a pick-and-roll league. He is the perfect fit for a team with Big Al and Love. I think he’s clearly the 2nd best player in this draft.

See, I guess this is my point
You’ve been on Curry forever, and that’s fine. You might be right about his studliness…but you’ve been wrong before. I like him too, though I see potential weaknesses. My point is that typically only a very small number of rookies each year actually become the studs we dream about. If the guy we get turns out to be a reasonably efficient starter or rotation player I’ll be pleased.

I am...
…all in on the guy ;)
Plus, if the Wolves draft him, that will be two years in a row with the guy I wanted them to pick. If they suck with those two, then I’m really wrong. I think Curry has a legit shot at being a #2 type guy on a contender. I think he can play to the level of a guy like Tony Parker. Not the same style, but the same impact at the position.

You know the old saying
“Be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it.”
Having said that, I’m right there with you. I wanted to just take K-Love straight up at 3 last year and I think Curry is studly as well (I’m also feeling very pro-Harden, who strikes me as lower-risk just because of his size and wingspan – in any case, we won’t have to choose between the two of them at #6. Hopefully one of them will drop to us).
I prayed every night for Adrian Peterson to somehow end up a Viking since the first time I saw him play his freshman year at Oklahoma, and I’ve been having a sustained purplegasm ever since that glorious draft day. I talked so much trash to everyone I knew about how AD was going to transcend physical reality like Neo at the end of the Matrix, and my feeling of personal ownership of that pick (which, obviously, I did not actually influence) has only added to my joy in watching him make opponents cry ever since.

You can never go wrong...
…picking an Okie ;) Although, Peterson did grow up south of the Red River.

I’m not disappointed if we come away with a solid starter by any means, and I think that’s a reasonable expectation to have for the 6th pick. I’m not super down on Evans either, but I do see limitations serious limitations to his game that I think might hold him back from being more than a #5 starter or possibly even a sixth man type of guy. Of course, he has enough talent that he could easily become better than that, but he’s pretty risky IMO.
Maybe the Salmons thing is me, but they’re very similar physically. Salmons is very good defender at 2 or 3 positions, can break guys down off the dribble and finish with good body control (instead of crazy lift) and is a a good enough passer/ball handler that he could play point in a pinch. He also has questionable decision making, non-elite athleticism and tends to get wrapped up in going 1-on1, which are things I see in Evans as well.
One Question
I see in their mock Thabeet was still on the board. Did this factor into your consideration in putting down Evans?
