More Draft Boarding
OK, we're almost to the end. This week's schedule looks like this:
Monday: 2nd round steals.
Tuesday: Possible trades.
Wednesday: Final Draft Board (Hoopus and Community)
Thursday: Open thread draft day
Here's where the Community Draft Board currently stands:
- Blake Griffin
- Ricky Rubio
- James Harden
- Stephen Curry
- Hasheem Thabeet
- Tyreke Evans
- Demar DeRozan
- Brandon Jennings
- Jrue Holiday
- Jonny Flynn
- Jordan Hill
- Ty Lawson
- Earl Clark
- ???
While you're voting, please take the time to listen to David Kahn's appearance on Saturday's In the Zone. If you're really up to it, you can listen to hour 2 where Dan Barreiro calls in to defend his honor against charges of being flustered during his own appearance with Kahn. In typical Danny-B fashion, he weighs down his take with qualifier after qualifier while calling those who disagree with him (including a long-time In the Zone caller) "chowder heads" and misstating Kahn's position as he uses it as a springboard for "savagery". At the end of the day, all he seems to care about his the meaningless middle (i.e. the center of attention), putting people in "boxes", and the aforementioned savagery. Kahn got the better of him and he's spent the past few days yelling otherwise into his very loud microphone.
Anywho, the Kahn interview on In the Zone is pretty good.
Until later.

Barreiro
Barreiro got it handed to him. The man just can’t be decent, and his thin skin makes it obvious how insecure and dare I say miserable he is. He had zero reason to go after Kahn and make the stupid insinuations that he did. I haven’t listened to him since and I can only imagine what he’s been saying in his own defense on the topic. The only guys left worth listening to over there are Sludge, Lake, Double T, what’s his name from In the Zone and Charch. I still like PA but his show is awfully tedious these days.
Thin skins and qualifications
From the drivetime host make for better ratings.
"Come on Eddie, let's get serious."
Barreiro's show is far better with a foil that way, actually
It’s odd, because actually Dan Barreiro suffers from exactly the thing that he derides in the Wolves. His show tends to devolve into him repeating much the same material, with the sidekick producer (until recent personnel changes, I guess?) basically chiming in to agree. That would be a “country club” atmosphere, in which the voices on the air all have to agree with each other. He’s moaned about it forever, and along the way he’s become it.
Maybe Dan does get flustered on the air with someone who’s got different opinions and who isn’t afraid to air things out a little. The show, though, is much better that way. It’s not a contest between the two of them, it’s about whether fans would care a whit to tune in. I never care, never, about his daily program, because he’s predictable and dull and whiny, and he never has anything new to say. Personally I think the questions he asked here, when he was scrambling around, were a lot more interesting than his usual fare. He didn’t even resort to “The fact of the matter is….” fifteen times.
The stupid thing is that Barreiro doesn’t ‘get’ that. He’s smarting over what amounts to a lively interview, and he’s actually getting all wound up with what trolling e-mailers say afterward…. That’s not too far removed from certain bilious political commentators whose program is usually safely screened away from dissent.
Kahn is going on that show, intelligently I think, to reach the team’s fanbase that had been alienated. He’s doing that part of his job, anyway. He comes off as condescending, a bit, but it’s mostly just vocal mannerisms that way. Otherwise he’s in good humor, and the interviews are fun.
(This was nowhere near as awkward as Dan’s interview with the “black power” fist raiser from the Olympics. That guy became actually confrontational when Barreiro seemed to sniff at the “supposed” historical significance of the gesture.)
Good points...
…I definitely don’t think he’ll get that this interview was some of the best stuff he’s had in a long time. It was good radio and he was going up against someone who didn’t buy into his shtick and was willing to play around with it.

There are a lot more busts who are less than seven feet than there are seven-foot busts.
It’s just we remember every seven footer who never pans out (although even big draft “busts” like Greg Oestertag often enjoy long and productive careers when they have that kind of size).
We forget all the scrappy little guards who never amount to much, of whom there are a dozen every year.

Although I didn't vote Mullens either.
But I did think about it a bit.

I just think that there are more solid 7 foot guys..
that the Wolves can target through other means. I might be ok with him later, just not at #18.
This isn't about who the best player is...
It’s also factoring in who’s currently on the roster. I didn’t vote for Mullens but can see why others would prefer a C over another 6’7-6’8 big guy, even if Blair is considered the better player.

We already have someone exactly like Dejuan Blair on our team...
Can you guess his name? The Rhino! I say if we don’t get Thabeet we don’t get a center from this draft, Al Jefferson will suffice until future drafts or Free Agency. I say we take Eric Maynor personally.
Inaccurate Comparsion
Blair’s got about 3-4 inches when it comes to Wingspan and standing reach- making Blair much more capable of defending NBA posts. Blair’s also a much better rebounder. This isn’t to knock Rhino only to point out Blair doesn’t have many of the same flaws in his game.

I got your length, right here--
Someone named Ryan Feldman at something called The Hoops Report is reporting that the Wolves have guaranteed Austin Daye that they’ll pick him at 18 if he’s available.
I’m all for it.
....and they will package up his draft rights and move him on?
I like the idea of Daye at Minnesota but surely pick 18 is a trading chip in this draft…
Curry
Weren’t there going to be a couple more S-n-P posts on Curry? We got the one favorably comparing him to JJ Redick, but I don’t remember seeing the other two. I know it’s tough proving he isn’t going to be a defensive liability in the pros, but I was looking forward to an attempt. There are probably more important things to write about this week… I think I am ok with us taking Harden, Evans, Curry, or Thabeet at 6.
At this point no
Real life got in the way of me putting the time in for something like that. I figured his skyrocketing draft status was enough to ease most people’s worries about the guy.

Perfectly understandable.
Curry’s athleticism numbers at the Chicago camp seemed to alleviate the worries I had about being athletic enough to play defense. I really like the length of Harden and Evans, compared to Curry, but Curry seems like more of a point guard with more offensive skills and athleticism.
