The Knicks are about to officially enter the Ricky Rubio sweepstakes.
Donnie Walsh revealed on Friday that he intends to call his former assistant, Minnesota GM David Kahn, about the availability of Rubio, the fifth overall pick from Thursday's NBA Draft.
Rubio, the highly touted point guard from Spain, would prefer to play in New York. Rubio's father told Marca.com that his son may elect to stay with his club team in Spain for at least another two years.
From the Daily News. Interjecting my two cents: If the Wolves were willing to stand pat at 5 and let Rubio fall to them instead of moving up to 2 or 3, then they should be cool in the face of any pressure from the Rubio camp that a 18 year old point will spend a year or two back in Europe. Hold steady and it will all work out.

Yes they should hold firm
but now we’re negotiating with a team with no equal assets, run by our GM’s mentor, in the city that benefited from the “frozen lotto card” in the 1983 draft.
Forgive me if I’m not excited.

This is nothing news
Seriously, what could New York offer? They’ve denuded their roster so badly in preparation for 2010 that they have nothing to offer. We’ve got a better version of Nate Robinson as of yesterday, and we have 2 guys who can play the 4 better than David Lee. And what else are they going to offer?
Any self-respecting newspaper wouldn’t have even bothered running this story. Stupid Daily News.
Yeah..
…I kind of felt dirty about linking to it but with the Kahn/Walsh angle sure to get some play I figured I might as well start now.

I just hope that the Minny media..
….acts like they don’t deserve Rubio or that we are somehow too small for the kid. This is a major media market that has supported huge superstars in the past and which currently has the best player in the biggest domestic league (AP). This isn’t a desert island and millions of people live here. Here’s the population from the Barcelona area:
The main part of a union of adjacent cities and municipalities named Área Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB) with a population of 3,186,461 in area of 636 km² (density 5.010 hab/km²).
The Mpls/St. Paul metro area is 3.2 mil. Granted, it’s not as cosmopolitan (or scenic), but that’s still a lot of people and it’s about time we acted like it.

That exact philosophy
is why I use the term flagellants. It’s a perfectly apt description of that line of thinking when it comes to sports.
Hey, Barcelona may have the Mediterranean...
…but we have Minnetonka. His family should feel right at home.
Seriously, NY has Lee, whom we don’t need, but maybe a 3rd team would want Lee and send us someone of value. Plus some NY picks, and a year’s supply of cheesecake.
Agreed, and....
Lebron and Shaq currently play in a city dubbed “The Mistake by the Lake,” a depressed rust-belt city of 2.2 million, MSA. We should pay zero attention to this “small market” crap.
I think the media are misinterpreting Rubio’s family’s wishy-washy comments about staying in Europe: I think Rubio and his camp are just disappointed he went #5 (which Rubio himself said in his post-pick interview).
As for the Knicks, seems like they want this both ways: raze the roster for Lebron, but get frustrated the cupboard’s bare when they want to acquire an asset.
The only reason it's going to get play is because it's New York
And despite what they think, they’re not the center of the sports world. In other words, don’t let the bastards wear you down.
Exactly
Who does NY have that we’d be interested in? I have no problem with Ricky playing another year in Europe. Think of it as a chance for Kahn to make an impression on him and his family: do some trades, select the right coach, get some film down of a system that might be very Ricky friendly, and give Kahn some time to line up some endorsement opportunities so that Ricky understands he doesn’t have to be in the Big Apple to make money, etc. etc. I personally don’t hold it against Ricky that he’s weighing his options. Ultimately I think he just wants to play in the NBA, and if the situation here starts looking a lot more positive like an OKC or a Portland (couple years from now), then my guess is that Rubio will have no issues coming over here. And neither will his family.
"Come on Eddie, let's get serious."
I think this is true.
In a way, our roster will be so weak next year without him (barring some serious chicanery) that we’ll probably be top five in the draft again, keeping the Marko pick yet again and holding a few more picks down the line, which according to pundits would be like lottery picks in this last draft. A bunch of the great teams in recent years and many of the up-and-comers got to success by hitting the jackpot in the lottery twice (Durant, Westbrook; Oden, Roy; Robinson, Duncan). We will get another great pick next year at 2, 3, or 5, and be able to add Rubio back in as if he had broken his foot or something mid-season. Man am I rationalizing this.
Typical NY Stuff
Always assuming that they can just wrinkle their nose and everything that they want will happen.
Rubio...
He just needs to man up. It’s such bullshit. Yeah it’s cold here in the winter; deal with it. I love this guys’ skill set and I want to see him suit up for the Wolves so very much. Why even hold draft if guys can decide they don’t want to play here??? And no-showing the press conference today; very classy. This makes me sick.
More Good Stuff from the Daily News
They have a story on draft busts and the very first entry is as follows:
Frederic Weiss – No. 15, Knicks, 1999
Did the Knicks not watch the Olympics? After being memorably jumped over by Team USA’s Vince Carter in the 2000 Sydney games, Weiss goes on to be selected 15th by the Knicks in 1999. He fares no better in the NBA and quickly disappears from the league.
Did they not watch the Olympics that were played the year after they drafted Weiss? What were they thinking in 1999 when they drafted a guy that would go on to suck in an Olympics the next year?
Don't forget...
….that last year’s pick may have a broken back.

Warriors?
In addition to Curry what would you guys want from the Warriors for Rubio? Would Curry, Belinelli and Speedy Claxton’s expiring contract that’s covered by insurance in exchange for Rubio and Cardinal be enough?
Thing A
"no homo"
Nope
There’s literally no combination of players on the GSW roster than I would take for Rubio. Quantity for quality holds no interest. I can conceive of no trade that I would accept for him right now.

Sittin in my scraper watchin Oakland goin wild, ta-dow!
No No No
Regardless of how good Monta is. He isn’t driving this team toward a championship. It’s very possible that Rubio isn’t either, but Ellis doesn’t really get us anywhere. Rubio is a unique talent. It might not happen; in fact, odds are against it that he really changes the franchise. But I KNOW Monta Ellis isn’t.
by Eric in Madison on Jun 26, 2009 3:17 PM CDT up reply actions
Trading Flynn and contracts for Monta would be good, though...
…. Monta is better at the two and could guard points while Rubio would guard the two. We’d have the best fast breaking team this side of New York. Since Monta isn’t happy and Curry might be better off the ball, GS might want a pure point with high potential like Flynn.
oh yeah, monta is not a “best player on a contender” type. he’s a number two guy. ricky could be a number one, maybe, maybe not, but depending how true the rumors of him staying in spain for a couple years are, he’d be worth a look from you guys.
heart of a champion, will of the warrior.
I’m huge on Rubio but I even in a best case scenario I can’t really imagine any roster where Rubio would be the best player on a championship contender.

i don’t know, if he develops a solid jumper (very possible), watch out. that kid’s passing ability is scary and he plays really good d. i wouldn’t call it impossible, even if it’s not likely.

Yeah
Go look at the rosters of the two Nets teams that made the finals. It was Jason Kidd and a bunch of parts. Kittles. Martin. van Horn. Seriously.
by Eric in Madison on Jun 26, 2009 5:43 PM CDT up reply actions
true but I see Kidd as the absolute best case scenario for Rubio and the East was pretty awful in the early 00’s. Martin, Jefferson, and Van Horn weren’t bad players at all in those days either, Kidd was clearly the best player but it wasn’t as thought it was Kidd out there by himself.

Minnesota's Cold?!?
Well I’ll be dipped. Last time I was there, there were a lot of houses that had working heat. Heck, a house with an attached garage and you almost never get out in the cold, except when walking in from parking at the MOA. Give me a break.
Hasn’t been very cool the past couple of days, either. . .
Sometimes the obvious is hidden.
From ESPN Insider
Update: Knicks to call about Rubio
Earlier we got wind that Ricky Rubio (perhaps annoyed to have landed in Minny) might stick around in Europe for another year, or, according to his dad, up to three.
Are the Knicks coming to the rescue?
According to our source with ESPN radio in NYC, Donnie Walsh said at the Knicks presser this afternoon that he is calling David Kahn — the T’Wolves’ GM — about Rubio. There are a lot of reasons to believe a deal with the Knicks could happen, according to our source.
Will update as we learn more.
Think the "source" is the same source of the Daily News?
It would good to know of ESPN’s “Insider” information is really just ripped off from other publications.
What reasons could there possibly be to believe a deal might be possible?
by Eric in Madison on Jun 26, 2009 3:19 PM CDT up reply actions
Actually
As of yet, there aren’t any reasons to believe that a deal will get done. Kahn is showing that he’s willing to call a bluff. He’s already laid out a plan to give Rubio time develop and see the direction of the team. And finally NY has absolutely nothing to offer us, short of working a three team trade with NO to get us Paul.
Just NYers thinking they’re all that.
"Come on Eddie, let's get serious."
Boo.
I don’t like it. I’d actually prefer to see if this crazy two PG combo would work rather than take whatever crap the Knicks send our way.
And now, for the sake of further discussion...
Who would you want coaching this team if they do stick with (and can bring in) both Rubio and Flynn for next season?
Someone
Who can positively motivate them. This team needs to learn a winning mindset. Wittman failed, in part, because he neglected that, thinking that rigid execution is what you need. No, execution is important, but look at the willingness of the Bulls, Rockets, and even Lakers to really dig deep and play harder for their teammates. They execute, but they also believe and fight for each other. Maybe I’m overvaluing it, but it seems important to me with a young team to be able to get their heads in a positive place and give them the tools to weather the growing pains and losing that will come in the short term.
"Come on Eddie, let's get serious."
I think there is a certain former point guard whose name has come up recently...
I’d be pretty happy if Flynn and Rubio could learn from one of the greats at their position.
We could...
…certainly do worse. And I think the one thing we don’t have to worry about is Kahn cracking in this waiting game. New York is the team in a hurry. We are definitely not. Think of Rubio as the ultimate Euro stash. Would you rather have him under contract at 23 or 25? Something to consider.
Would either team do a
Jonny Flynn for Brandon Rush trade?
by Eric in Madison on Jun 26, 2009 4:10 PM CDT reply actions
there’s no combination of Warriors players you’d take for Rubio but you want to trade Flynn for Brandon freakin Rush?!

"no homo"
Not really
I just don’t relish Flynn on the roster.
Rubio is in a different category in my view. I’d trade Flynn to Golden State too, though for what exactly I don’t know. I just won’t trade Rubio.
by Eric in Madison on Jun 26, 2009 4:51 PM CDT up reply actions
I don’t think the Warriors would even give you Curry for Flynn. He’s a nice player, but there isn’t really a match there unless you guys wanted Belinelli.
Thing A
"no homo"
yeah, i think curry’s the better player and we really don’t need someone as good as i think flynn will be as our 3rd string point guard behind monta and curry. we’d be trading for him to trade him away. someone like marco might be a good thing for the wolves though. a decent bench 2 guard who can score would be helpful for rubio, who would be much better off passing to marco than corey brewer. i don’t really know what deals are possible in that situation, but considering our glut of decent off-guards, there’d have to be some deal that could work.
heart of a champion, will of the warrior.
Isn’t Captain Jack really your point guard/forward? It seems like that’s the way the team went with ellis out last year, and they kept part of it because Ellis is about as good as creating shots for others as Jackson is.
by pagingstanleyroberts on Jun 26, 2009 6:01 PM CDT up reply actions
Jack was asked to handle a lot of the PG duties last year…..and had mixed results. He’s a very good passing wing, but he turns the ball over way too much when he’s asked to do as much as he was last season. Monta hasn’t really been asked to be the primary ball handler and play maker yet, we’ll see how that experiment goes, but I think most of us are hopeful he can become more of a Devin Harris type PG than the undersized 2 most view him as right now.

My top choice is to trade Flynn to Portland for Rudy Fernandez…makes sense for both teams.
However, would you guys do Rubio for Oden?
I don't think Portland would do Fernandez for Flynn
I certainly wouldn’t if I were them. Fernandez was very good last season as a rookie. I would do Flynn + to get Fernandez, who I like, and who would be great for Rubio on a number of levels. On a pure BBall level, check out Fernandez’ 3 point percentage and number of attempts last season.
I just don’t know if there’s a deal to be had there.

It's very easy to deal with this trade rumour...

From Newsday
OK, where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire. But this Ricky Rubio thing is more of a smolder. And on Friday Donnie Walsh blew on the embers to keep them glowing a little, though his rare transparency was curious.
On the day the Knicks introduced first round picks Jordan Hill and Toney Douglas to the media at the MSG Training Center, Walsh acknowledged that he planned to call his former protege, Timberwolves president David Kahn, to check in on the situation involving his decision to select two point guards — Ricky Rubio and Jonny Flynn — with back-to-back picks at No. 5 and 6.
"I haven’t spoken to Minnesota, I will," Walsh said. "I don’t know what’s going on there. He took a lot of point guards so I want to ask him, ‘Why did you do that?’ In a way that kind of helped us because that left us with two players that were, in our mind, really good players. I just want to find out."
Walsh said Rubio was “very high” on the Knicks draft board but when asked if he would have selected the Spanish guard if he were there at No. 8, Walsh replied, "We would have considered a lot of people at eight, but tht would have meant that the guy that we got would have been gone."
Multiple sources have said that Rubio was not as highly-regarded by the Knicks as Stephen Curry and Tyreke Evans and perhaps not as much as Hill, whom some Knick scouts touted as the second-best player in the draft. But if there is a chance Rubio — whose father told a Spanish media outlet that his son will most likely remain in Spain for two years (until his current contract with DKV Joventut expires) — could be acquired for a relatively cheap cost, it’s worth a look.
But before we explore the options, you should know that Kahn was on with Mike & Mike on ESPN Radio this morning and vehemently denied any intentions to trade Rubio. Kahn said he was quite aware that Rubio might decide not to report and that’s why he took Flynn with the very next pick. The T-Wolves can play Flynn now and take their time dealing with the Rubio situation.
Rubio we’re told was desperately hopeful he would somehow wind up with the Knicks and, apparently, is still holding out hope. It is pretty clear that he would immediately report if the Knicks acquired his rights.
But, though Walsh says he will check it out, it is still very unlikely to happen.
