Wolves unveil new Rubio/Flynn season ticket pitch
If you head on over to Timberwolves.com you will see a flashy new intro with big pictures of Rubio and Flynn next to the words "Skill, Electricity, One Team. Be a part of: Rubio and Flynn". Remember, this club is still selling tickets for $5. If they get Flynn and Rubio on the court next season, you can't beat that.
The team has also placed press releases for the Rubio and Flynn picks on its website.

They better hope he's on the floor

No kidding
I can see an enterprising attorney adding a screen capture of this as Exhibit A in the eventual class action suit.
Okay, I obviously need a break. I’m taking a walk outside. Let the optimism reign unfettered . . .

Hollinger's ESPN insider take on the draft?
Man, I hate the idea of paying for this. Does anyone have access?
by TheH on Jun 26, 2009 2:09 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Hollinger doesn't like it at all:
Worst foresight: Minnesota
Just an idea to throw out: You might want to see if a guy is interested in playing for you before you cash in all your chips to get his rights. That’s particularly true if said player has enough leverage to spend the next two years making good money playing someplace else.
‘Sota was geeked to get two top-six picks but used one of them on Ricky Rubio, who was clearly crestfallen by the idea of going 26-56 in the frozen tundra for the next half-decade. Even more baffling was that they took another point guard with the next pick, Syracuse’s Jonny Flynn.
Nobody is quite sure what the Wolves’ intentions are — though they insist they’re keeping Rubio, teams like the Knicks and Rockets are circling like sharks hoping to relieve Minnesota of a player who seems highly unlikely to suit up for them for at least the next two years. Rubio has a $6 million buyout in Spain and would essentially be playing in the NBA for free. He was willing to do it in New York, and even in Sacramento, but apparently he draws the line at Minnesota.

He might be right...
But at this point, it’s based on opinion, partial truths, and interpretation.

I think that's big market...
…bullshit. What kind of coverage is that? Hollinger should close up shop, move do DC and become part of the Beltway with takes like that. Is he or is he not the BPA? Does he have upper-level potential? Maybe Hollinger can write his next column about Rubio’s body language.

Agreed
For one, its not like Kahn had much of an option here. If he doesn’t select Rubio with the #5 or #6, there would’ve been a riot last night at Target Center.
Secondly, its certain not baffling to pick Flynn if you anticipate Rubio staying in Spain for one or two years.
I think Hollinger is pretty short sighted here.

Yup
Hollinger’s becoming more and more mainstream these days. He used to be a great, stathead outsider with great observations about players. Great for spurring discussion and challenging the status quo. Not so anymore—he thinks his draft rater is the best (but that’s increasingly proved to be a bit better, but no sure thing), and he seems to be showing more and more bias (or letting his own personal bias seap into his columns more). I’m surprised he didn’t cite his little birdies as the source for his speculation about Ricky’s (or should we say Ricky’s family’s) attitudes.

Facts not in evidence, Your Honour...
It’s easy to write sh*t like this, it’s harder to apply the same sort of reasoned analysis he would save for a “good” or “popular” team. Hollinger wants to be a cross between Chad Ford and Bill Simmons and does poorly at both.
Lot of posturing and supposition about who wants what and how much the buyout is going to be. I’m willing to wait to see what happens. Rubio clearly wants to be in the NBA. Well, you have your wish Ricky.
And I’m willing to see David Kahn play hardball. Very hard.

I like what Kahn has been saying: We don't care. He is going to be playing for us.
I like that Kahn has been saying: we drafted him and we are going to get him, even if it takes two years. I can wait for Rubio to turn 20 for him to start playing for the T-wolves.
I really do like what the T-wolves have done. They did the right thing. They took the best player available, which is what a struggling team is supposed to do.

The odd thing is...
… that the one way we can manage the waiting period is if we have a semi-productive, ball dominant point guard to help us bide our time. Johnny Flynn. I’m starting to see the logic, but maybe this is the booze talking.

Exactly..
….you don’t want them to come out and say it, but they’re the ones in charge here.

How long
Before the first major journalist or media type raises the prospect that Kahn might just be doing a really good job with all this? He drafted the best two players available on a team essentially starting from scratch. He called OKC’s and Memphis’ bluffs on draft night and got the player he wanted. He protected himself from Rubio’s potential “You need a point so bad, trade me for on” leverage by drafting Flynn, and got a player he really wanted anyways. He’s not being antagonistic with Rubio’s agent, and he’s happy if Rubio wants to stay in Spain to develop. Other teams are circling like vultures (Knicks), but there’s absolutely nothing they have that could entice us.
All the media types are siding with Ricky at the moment, and they should as it’s a better story if we draft him and he doesn’t want to be here and MN is blundering again. But I bet within a few days to a week someone nationally will start wondering why Presti couldn’t get a trade with us, or why the Knicks are still on the outside looking in? Sooner or later some analyst or commentator’s got to see that Kahn’s draft wasn’t all that bad—in fact, it might have been quite shrewd.

That could only happen if...
… Rubio suits up for the Wolves this year, plays well, gets endorsements AND openly says he loves it here.
And lets be honest, who doesn’t love ’Sota once they come here? Outside of head cases.
I hate Pod Six. I don't even know why we have a Pod Six. Total suck pod.

Sounds
very plausible. I’m still sceptical though I have to admit. It just seems weird taking two players so high that one way or another one of them is not gonna cut it. On the other hand, it does make sense in a varaity of ways to pick the bpa … the very sad thing is I still think Curry is way better than Flynn. If they selected Curry instead of Flynn I’d think none of this stuff would have been so public.

Though
I have to add, it would be very scary to draft 2 guys who might not wanna play here :).

It will never happen..
…because the dominant theme with the Wolves is that they are still dysfunctional.

BTW: Mike Max
Wins the award for the worst question in the presser. “Jonny and Wayne, what is the benefit of playing for a top-notch college program?” Gee Mike, what is the benefit of being on CCO rather than blogging for SB Nation? What a jackass.
