UPDATE: I removed the link because it automatically started up video and slowed down the site after the live presser ended. You can head on over to the team's official site to watch a replay. Jonny Flynn will wear #11 and Wayne Ellington will wear #19. Kahn will make another appearance on the Dan Barreiro show at 4:05. You can listen by clicking here.

Ellington takes Sammy C's...
And Tony Campbell’s #19. Does it indicate anything about Carney that Flynn is #11 instead of #10?

Raising the obvious question
Just how short IS David Kahn?
Seriously, I’m a little frustrated that he seems to be capitulating to the idea that Rubio won’t be here.

I do think he's playing it correctly..
….it’s a family financial decision and they’re willing (and able) to wait. They’re in no hurry to move him and if he’s going to play in the NBA, it’s here. I don’t think they can play it differently. Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if the decision to not have Rubio there was the Wolves’. From language to the buyout situation to raw emotion to an 18 year old kid not being on message, it probably wouldn’t have went well.

And if Rubio comes around to the idea of playing this year...
… the kid gets a press conference all to himself. I’m sure that’s better than being around the Flynn lovefest.
I hate Pod Six. I don't even know why we have a Pod Six. Total suck pod.

I have a feeling that Rubio’s desire to play in the NBA exceeds his other desires. I think he just likes playing basketball, and it’s winning over the agent and his family that’s going to take time.
We need KG to give him a call, or if not him then Purple Jesus, Torii Hunter, even the M and M boys, to let him know that there’s a great history of being a huge star in this market, and that you can get national (and international) exposure pretty easily here. I mean, come on—Favre is about to come here, and I don’t think that his marketing opportunities are going to be diminished by being here. TWolves aren’t where the Vikes are yet (as a team), but in 2-3 years—and especially with Rubio—they could be. CP3 is a huge star, and he plays in one of the smallest markets. Same with Duncan. Same with Roy.

I'm excited to purchase my Flynn jersey
I’m very psyched about this kid, regardless of the Rubio situation.
I know that you're right
He couldn’t very well be making demands of Rubio right now. It’s just my opinion is that it’s very important that he comes here this year. I know others disagree.
My hope is that his desire to play in the NBA is enough motivation to get him here.

I'd agree with you on Rubio.
I think if he doesn’t don a Wolves jersey this season, he never will. Just a hunch.
As long as he's here before 21...
..I’m good. Remember, his rookie scale doesn’t change. If his buyout reduces year by year, it’s just a matter of getting him to a reasonable point.

But...
Do you really think his reticence to play in a “small market” like Mpls/St. Paul will soften over time? I don’t. I think he’s a guy who believes (and probably rightfully so) that the NBA is an option that will always be there for him, so he can afford to play hardball on this to get the situation he wants.
And if the Wolves stash him in Spain another couple years, I can only imagine it reinforcing his idea that this is not the situation for him. Unless we really get it together in a year or two and this is a championship contending team (read: top half of the Western Conference standings), I don’t see his mindset changing.
I think now is the time to sell him on the idea that developing and growing with an NBA team here and now is the better bet in terms of actually getting him in a Wolves uni. And how much leverage would the Wolves have for him in a year or two? I don’t know the rules on this, but how long do the Wolves have his rights for if they stash him away in Europe while they wait for the buyout to decrease?
I think he needs to come now, and I agree that the selling point
is, we’re building around you and Love, et. al., get here so we can get on with getting good.
As for his rights, the Wolves retain his rights in perpetuity unless he does not play professional basketball for a full year. There is no expiration date.
by Eric in Madison on Jun 26, 2009 3:56 PM CDT up reply actions
To clarify
I think that we have rights while he is under contract, so for instance if he doesn’t play for DKV while negotiating his buyout over the year if things got nasty, who would still be under contract essentially, so we would keep his rights.
Yup
We have his rights unless his goes an entire year without being paid to play basketball.
"Come on Eddie, let's get serious."
Where will he go?
He makes like $150k/year and he’s still on the NBA rookie scale no matter where he ends up. I don’t care what he thinks about Mpls/St. Paul. He wanted to go 1,2, or 3 to soften the blow of the buyout. The Wolves have his rights long enough where his buyout in Spain would be reduced to zero (I’m checking on the exact dates so I may be a bit off). He’ll be 21 at that time. Does he take the money that Kevin Love had last year? Do the Wolves tell him that they’ll give him his 2nd contract the first option year? This is a perfect situation for him. He will grow with 2 young bigs on a team with a ton of assets. I don’t think it’s beyond belief that he’s here this year but I wouldn’t be worried if he’s not. Of course, it will be a big deal on ESPN and in New York, but the Wolves still have his rights, the buyout reduces over time, and he’s 18. I’m sure Flynn, Ellington, and Norel all would have liked to end up with the Knicks. Everyone wants Miami or LA. That’s what the off-season is for. It will all work out in the end. The worst that could happen is that they trade him for a decent asset. I don’t think it will ever come to that but the Wolves just need to keep doing what they’re doing: Tell the family they understand the situation and will work on their timeline because they really want Rubio on the team and are committed to winning with him.
I’ll try to get the info on the contract.

Good line of questioning, but consider this...
The real key might be Fegan and the amount of money he makes. Fegan will probably get zip or close to it if RR stays in Spain. Fegan will obviously make good money if RR comes to the Wolves. But Fegan will get rich all over again if RR goes to NY, LA, SF, Dallas, and maybe even San Diego — where the latin American market is strong.
Will Fegan advise RR to go to MN early, to start getting some scratch on his investment now? With the thought that in 4 years RR can go to one of the major markets?
Or will Fegan want RR to stay for 1 or 2 years in Spain and then go to MN?
Or will Fegan want to see RR stay in European leagues for the rest of his career?
I’m guessing Fegan will advise RR to get over to MN ASAP so he can hit a major market when he is 22 or 23 and then make Fegan pots and pots of filthy lucre.
Having said that, I think Kahn made a mistake in taking Flynn. FIrst, he shoulda traded the pick. Or 2nd, he shoulda taken the best SG or wing on the board at the time, so what if they shoulda been a 10 pick rather than a 6 pick. The big mistake was giving RR and mostly FEGAN an argument for drawing this thing out.
If you have a talent as bit as RR at pick 5, you protect it, you don’t hedge against it.
But hey, welcome to the reign of Kevin McKahn. Why did I have to be born in MN anyway?
If I'm Kahn..
…I let Fagen know that I would give Rubio a new contract during the 1st option year to at least make up for any money lost in the buyout and more depending on play.
The World's Leading Exporter of Small Area Quickness

And Fegan can 'advance' money to RR...
… to help in the buyout. It’s only priming the pump to him.
Reticence to play in a small market?
Like Sacramento. Yeah.
The deal with him is a) his buyout; and b)the rookie scale for the slot he was chosen in. Going fifth hurt his money situation.
Either he’s super motivated and he wants to start working his time as an indentured servant now, which position we can cajole him toward, or we’re in a David Robinson/Larry Bird situation and we wait a year. If the buyout amount is reduced by a season’s worth at that point, then he’d come in a year’s time. That’s the compromise, in a few senses.
I can live with it. This is one of the best passers we have ever seen in basketball. He’s a Jason Kidd level talent. You wait a bit, be patient, and sign him when he’s 19 or 20.
The rookie scale does change.
They use the scale salary for the year that players are signed (unless it takes until a new CBA that changes it, of course.

“When a team signs a first round draft pick in a year other than the year in which he was drafted, the player is signed using the salary scale for the year in which he is signed, not the year in which he was drafted.”

Welcome Johnny Flynn and Wayne Ellington
Saw the last 5/10 minutes and Khan was trying to justify the Flynn over Curry pick by saying that Curry also wanted to be a PG. This ignored the fact that that he played SG for most of his career.
I think it might be a bit of a rech to say that Flynn could become one of the greatest on ball defenders of his time, simply because of his height and the handchecking rules make it hard to defend PGs in this league.
I look forward to both of these playing guys for the Wolves
The whole point of that, though, is a guy needs to defend using quickness and technique. If those are his strengths, and I don’t know for sure one way or another, then the rules make a guy like him more valuable than a guy who would need to handcheck (which Curry would likely have to do).

I like Wayne Ellington's game a lot.
I think this guy might turn out to be a very, very good player in this league. He’s supposedly as good an athlete as Gerald Henderson and he can shoot from long range.
If he commits defensively and really looks to refine his outside shot, the sky’s the limit. I know that’s a lot of lofty talk, but isn’t that the point?
I think I once heard Phil Jackson say the NBA is basically a 3 guard rotation league. Depending on how you utilize Brewer, this team could easily have just drafted its 3 guards last night.
Man, I wish I could listen to Barreiro's interview with Kahn today.
I bet that’ll be entertaining, as Barreiro tries to get Kahn to admit he blundered while Kahn runs circles around him and doesn’t play his game.
Hooray for Fridays.
I snuck the interview in in bits and pieces here. It didn’t seem as contentious as I thought Barreiro would attempt to be.
Barrerio didn't try his..
…shtick this time around. I’m sure he and his new sidekick will start to make fun of the guy after he’s off the air.

I remember watching Ellington as a freshman...
and being amazed at how he could knock down dribble jumpers. It sounds simple, but that’s taken for granted at the NBA level, and hardly seen in college. Most 18-21 year olds have a helluva time making anything other than penetration moves or standing catch-and-shoots. He’s a gifted scorer, and might have a long NBA career. I like the pick, especially given our need for a 2-guard, in Foye’s absence.
Uniform-wise, Flynn’s definitely downgraded. I think Syracuse has one of the coolest looks of anyone these days.
I dont know the twolves color scheme is high up there imho (twolves fan)

They will likely unveil their new black alternates this year
The old ones were one of the best uniforms in the league. Here’s a guess as to what they might look like:

How about in green?
