Would you swap Rubio for...

Full disclosure: I'm a Portland fan.  But I'm also a Rubio fan.  Assuming your new GM decides that Rubio must indeed be moved, and realising that NY really has nothing you'd want, what would you think of the following offer:

Any three players from Portland out of:

Rudy Fernandez (SG)

Travis Outlaw (F)

Jerryd Bayless (G)

Nicolas Batum (SF)

I don't know how much you Wolves fans will have seen of these players, so I should tell you that Travis Outlaw is probably the most immediately useful to you but valued the least by Blazers fans.  He is the second best player on the Blazers at getting his own shot (and unblockable, because of his ridiculous hoops), but kind of a black hole, and not a great BBall IQ.  Batum, on the other hand, though his stats don't leap out at you, is almost the opposite, in that he's a very smart player and a great defender.  We like him more than Ariza because he actually has more all-round skills.  The common view is that he'll become Tayshaun Prince, whom he resembles physically (without the freckles).  Bayless you'll know if you watched last year's Summer League, which he absolutely tore up.  The reason he got little burn during the season, though, is that Blazer Brass keeps insisting that he's a PG, when he's clearly a SG, which is what he played in Summer League.  Rudy, I'm sure you know.

Rubio for Oden

Is only trade I’d make with Portland.

by TWolvesFanInLA on Jun 27, 2009 3:06 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

You're crazy, and too generous. MAYBE

for Oden and LMA. But we’re pretty well set down low.

It’s too bad we don’t have Foye any more. Maybe we could send him and Rubio back for Foy and change.

Nah.

Of course you overvalue your own players. How could you not, and still be a Blazers fan?

Well, this is not a bad offfer

Fernandez, Bayless and Batum. But the thing is, no. Rubio is more valuable to the Wolves than he is to any other team. The reason is that the Wolves need a franchise changing talent, which, while Rubio probably isn’t, at least he could be. Trading him for even quality parts just doesn’t get the Wolves where they need to go. If we already had our Brandon Roy (cough), then this deal is much more appealing.

Jefferson is a nice player...

And I don’t think Rubio is ever exactly a centerpiece in the NBA. Best case is Jason Kidd, but he was never exactly a superstar – those Nets Finals were among the least-watched, weren’t they?

(Of course, he didn’t look like the fourth Jonas Brother…)

Kidd...

May not have been a household name like LeBron or Kobe, but Kidd is Hall of Famer…we should be so lucky if Rubio becomes the second coming of Kidd.

I agree, but...

it’s kind of a long shot. Another comparison is Rajon Rondo. I LOVE Rondo, but the thought of him on the Celtics after the big three conk out is kind of depressing. Unless he’s surrounded by talent, he’ll go crazy and won’t be a draw in the least. Contrast with someone like Dwyane Wade: even when Miami sucked, he was still a draw. Anyway, like I said, if you KNEW you wouldn’t get Rubio, do you think this is among the best offers you could get?

by meru on Jun 27, 2009 4:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes

I think this is an interesting offer if I knew he wouldn’t come here. But I don’t think that’s knowable. The Wolves have a pretty big hammer here, which is: have a nice 10 years in Europe making less money and not fulfilling your dream.

As to the offer, I like it, but I wonder if the Wolves wouldn’t prefer something riskier but potentially more Upsidy—a very high pick in next year’s draft, whatever.

by Eric in Madison on Jun 27, 2009 5:06 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Of course, that should be RubiO

And yes, the Wolves need a franchise-changing talent, but suppose you knew that he would rather spend his entire career in Spain than play in Minny?

(Of course, if he won’t play in Minny, why would he play in Portland? Well, let the Blazers worry about that after you trade him.)

Oh, and Ariza is not that great. He’s a solid role player in the perfect situation, but he can’t create his own shot or even dribble particularly well. We’re not talking Grant Hill here.

Rubio/Coach Search

I don’t think Kahn will trade Rubio unless he is blown away by a trade offer…I also don’t think Rubio will be moved until we have a coach. Potentially coaching Rubio is a big carrot to dangle in front of Avery Johnson, Mark Jackson etc.

You Minnesotans must have an inferiority complex...

…if you think you need Rubio to attract Jackson or Johnson. Only people like Phil Jackson or Pat Riley can afford to be picky about what franchise they get to coach. (Yes, Rambis is being picky, but that’s because he’s got the Lakers coming if he’s patient.)

I don't think ricky will ever wear a timberwolves jersey.

Rubio for Fernandez and Batum would be a great deal.

Flynn, Fernandez, Batum, Love, and Jefferson as the starting 5 would be an interesting squad.

I doubt that the Blazers would do it though. They seem to love those guys.

Wouldn't do this...

but it’s not a terrible offer. Fernandez and Batum could be really solid pieces for a young team to build with.

But they are rotation players, even if pretty good ones. Can’t trade a future star (which we assume/hope Rubio to be) for a bunch of rotation players, unless you absolutely have to.

If Ricky ever demands a trade, there will be a league-wide bidding war, since he’s only 18 and every team in the league (except maybe Chicago, New Orleans and Utah) would have interest. I would hope that we can get more than Portland’s rotation players in return.

The only two pieces of real interest are Rudy and Batum

I have to admit value wise it’s pretty solid. I think Rudy could be a 3rd scoring option on a good team long-term. As for Batum- I like the Trevor Ariza Comparsion. I would question why the Blazers would make such a move. Thier biggest strength last year was their shooting (Why trade Rudy) and their biggest weakness perimeter D (Why trade Batum). I guess they could use a PG I would target someone that can be effective without being a ball-dominant like Kirk Hinrich. I also tend to think since Roy is so good with the ball in his hands you’d want him more complimented by more a shooter than a pure PG. This is why rumors of Portland pursuing Curry made sense.
