The Latest on Rubio - from Timberwolves NBA site
David Kahn - The Wolves have received phone calls from teams inquiring about the possibility of a deal for Rubio. At this time, Minnesota holds a variety of options after using the No. 5 overall pick on Thursday night. The Wolves can place Flynn at the point guard spot for the 2009-10 season while Rubio plays one or two more years for DKV Joventut.
"Let me start by saying this. I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t pick up the phone and listen. But that goes for all our players. There’s no one special player. Al knows that and Kevin knows that. As much as I think I hope everyone would like to be here, I would say this: Shaquille O’Neal, who I think may be one of the five best centers of all time, just last season third team all-NBA, will be playing on his fifth team next year. That’s incredible when you think about it. May I add also traded, as the esteemed Bill Simmons would say, for a bag of donuts this week. My point is I think as much as I would like to portray for all of our guys we’re here forever, we all know, myself included, maybe we’re not. You have to answer the phone, you have to listen. But we’re in no mode right now to make any trade," Kahn said.

This strikes me as a little different
in tone than what we’ve heard before. Sadly.

Completely
This sounds like a message to Ricky, his family, and agent: You aren’t going anywhere. Please send us a postcard from Spain.

I see it the other way
actually. This makes it sound like he’s more open to trading him than it had before, IMO. Which sucks.

Yeah, but...
Not right now. Not when Ricky wants it to happen. I get the impression that he is letting Fegan know that he can speak to the hand for a while.

It's a non-committal statement
We’re listening, but not moving.

Isn’t this what Kahn has said all along? Like, back before the draft? I distinctly recall him saying no one is untradeable, even Love or Jefferson. He said that maybe Kobe/LeBron are at that level, but not anyone on our team.

That's the impression I got
He’s saying that if Shaq can be traded anyone can be traded so of course the Wolves are listening to trade offers for Rubio. That said, the offers they’re hearing aren’t necessarily good and he doesn’t see any reason to take any of them or even give real consideration to any of them.

Lazy journalism...again
Bruce Jenkins is a longtime columnist for the SF Chronicle…I expected better from him (not to mention he messed up Kahn’s title)… his words are followed by my commentary…my stuff begins with —
They certainly owe a note of thanks to David Kahn, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ new general manager, who tried to make a splash — drafting point guards Ricky Rubio and Jonny Flynn with the Nos. 5-6 selections — and shown he hadn’t done his homework.
—How can you suggest that Kahn didn’t do his homework? People who follow the draft infinitely more than you do said this was the worst draft in years…isn’t the idea to maximize the value of each pick you have? Rubio was clearly the best value at No. 5, whether he’s kept or not…how can that be disputed? Houston, Dallas, and the Knicks, among others, are dying to get their hands on him….1 team called Kahn, in his words, and said, “We are keeping player ______________, but take any 2 other guys you want.”
He writes this in one paragraph: First off, Kahn shouldn’t have even considered Rubio. Curry is going to have a better NBA career
A couple sentences later he writes: Rubio has superstar potential down the line.
—Why at pick No. 5 wouldn’t you consider someone who has, in your words, superstar potential down the line?
Rubio means flash, publicity and perhaps some real excitement down the line, but he’s only 18, and he (and his father) made it quite clear they don’t see Minnesota as a destination.
—I am missing Ricky’s direct quote where he has said he’s not going to MN.

It will only get worse...
…as the summer goes on. People want this decision to fit into a nice little box and it doesn’t. It’s not going to happen quickly or in a way that can be easily predicted.

Kahn said the same thing
about Love and AlJeff when their names were being tossed about, even before Rubio was picked. Basically: “I like a few of our guys. A lot. But I will always consider deals that might make our team better.”
Which is the truth. Which is exactly what his philosophy should be. It applied before the draft, and it applies after the draft.
The pick had to be made—especially when they had another pick and another PG in mind right afterwards. The Wolves have absolutely no motive (short of including Rubio in a deal for CP3—hmm, wait a minute—to the Trade Machine!) to trade Rubio now. They can be extra nice to him, tell him they’ll do anything the kid wants to make the transition easier—new coach, complimentary players, heated helicopter to take his mother to the supermercado, whatever it takes.
But when he and Fegan ask to be traded, smile sweetly and say, “I don’t think so.”
