Rubio interview in Spanish
Any translation help would be greatly appreciated. AltaVista's translation service is useless but entertaining:
"We went until New York to interview to Blond Ricky: " Me impression much what surrounded to the election of draft, but was necessary to maintain the calm. I have more uncertainty by my future that before draft, we are going to see that they love. Every minute I am in a different place, is like stock-market that does not raise and low. Still I have not decided if itself in the ACB or I go away to the NBA, depends on the equipment that has my right, but so far I believe that it would return to the ACB. I am going to put to me in form in case Scariolo calls to me. I have enough options to return to the ACB".

Is this the link I just sent you via email?
This is a radio interview from a couple of hours ago: http://www.cadenaser.com/deportes/audios/ricky-rubio-larguero-tengo-bastantes-opciones-volver-acb/csrcsrpor/20090628csrcsrdep_1/Aes/
Q: There are so many rumors that I don’t know if it’s possible to get something straight at this point.
Rubio: Yes, I think every minute I’m in a different place. It’s a bit like the stocking market, that you don’t know where you are and you go up and down. But we’ll see. Everything will be sorted out and we’ll see the team that holds my rights here (in the NBA), which is Minnesota for the moment.
Q: You still haven’t decided whether you stay in the ACB or you go to the NBA, right? That’s the first thing to be decided, I guess.
Rubio: Yes, that’s the first thing to decide, but it will also depend on which team holds my rights, but for the moment I think I would go back (to the ACB).
I think so..
…I also got one from someone in the comments earlier who was going to translate it if he had the time. Let me check my email…yep, same one.

We went to New York to interview Ricky Rubio:
“I was very impressed by all that surrounds the draft, but I had to stay calm. I have more uncertainty about my future now than I did before the draft; we’ll see what they want. Every minute I’m in different place, it’s like the bag that doesn’t go up and down (?!? might be a colloquialism?). I still haven’t decided if I’ll stay in the ACB or if I’ll go to the NBA, it depends on which team has my rights, but for now I think I’ll return to the ACB. I’ll get in shape in case Scariolo [head coach of Spanish national team] calls. I have lots of options in the ACB.”
stock market
“bolsa” = “stock market”, i guess. never ran into financial talk in Spanish. note that it also means bag, and i like the American Beauty-style imagery that brings up.
There's the answer there...
Yes, that’s the first thing to decide, but it will also depend on which team holds my rights, but for the moment I think I would go back (to the ACB).
Sit tight Kahn. The Earth is slow, but the Ox is Patient.
yep
if rubio wants to play in the nba, that road runs through minny.

And more than any other player out there
I think he desperately needs a summer league to get used to SOME of what the Wolves would be asking him to do .

Listened to the radio interview, doesn’t sound good.
He did say New York was very loud and that he likes quiet places though, haha. Although right after he does slip and says that hes told the training facilities are in quiet areas of the city, so thats bad news #1
Hes also returning to Spain in the next couple of days, add that to the bad news. Although his contract has to be resolved on the 30th because thats when it becomes more expensive, so expect real news soon I guess.
Ddint say anything bad about Minnesota, if you look at the transcripts theres some selective quoting cause first the interviewer asks him where does he think hes gonna play and Rubio says something like “It depends on what team has my rights, and right now thats Minnesota” which is good news but then the interviewer asks (repeatedly, btw) what about the ACB and then Rubio says again that it depends which team has his rights … which isn’t a good answer to give in any way shape or form.
Another thing is that we don’t know the time discrepancy between the TV interview and the radio interview. Which one happened earlier? Rubio does say that everything seems to be changing by the hour, so thats something to keep in mind (be confused about).
So yeah, I’m disappointed but hopefully it works out in the end.
As for translating properly what you quoted, but keep in mind that they really made the thing quite a bit shorter than in the interview when it came to quoting, and most Spanish media wants him to stay in the ACB, so take this with a (small) grain of salt:
“I was very impressed by everything surrounding the draft, but we had to keep calm. I have a lot more doubt for my future now than before the draft, but well see what they want. Every minute I’m in a different team, its like the stock exchange that goes up and down. I still haven’t decided if I stay in the ACB or go to the NBA, depend son the team that holds my rights, but right now I think I would go back to the ACB. I am going to get in shape in case Scariolo calls me (coach of the Spanish national team). I have a lot of options of coming back to the ACB.”
Good point...
…on the domestic angle of this in Spain. I don’t think this is, or Kahn’s earlier statement, represent any change in what both sides have already said.

Tampering?
Has anyone on the board covered the potential tampering? If Fegan and the Knicks(or any other team) are talking about Rubio, Kahn should find a way to nail them to the wall.
Stern would have a tough time telling the Wolves, out of any team, that other teams and agents can get by without playing by the rules.
There hasn't been anything in public that has been tampering, as far as I can tell
Walsh said in public that he was going to call Kahn, but I don’t think he even mentioned Rubio’s name. THat was the reporter asking. The rule is that there can’t be direct contact between a team and a player whose rights are held by another team.
I’m not sure whether there are any rules about the representative of a player talking to another team about his player who is controlled by a team. I would assume that there are, on the team level. The NBA has rules about what teams can do, and they probably can’t do that. Agents are certified by the Union, so their rules control agent behavior.

Maybe I'm grasping at straws here
but what if this is a ruse to psych his current team into lowering the buyout bid? I mean, what I’m surprised by, is that Rubio could have pulled his name out of the draft as late as June 15th, right? So, 10 days before the draft is held (during which I saw a couple of mocks with Rubio going 4th and 5th), and it’s still “he always dreamed of playing in the NBA, he’ll play for free, blah, blah, blah.”
Then, on the 25th of June, Sacto (which soon could be “Kansas City”) says “no” at four (not a surprise), and he goes to Minnesota, and it’s, all, “Well, we’ll see, right now, I’m not so sure, it depends.” Something about this is a little disingenuous—especially since Rubio has already been publicly told that he’s the starting point guard the moment he steps foot in Minnesota.
My Texas Book Suppository theory is that no matter who picked Rubio, the hemming and hawing would start ten minutes after the draft was over. Then, the ACB team says, “Nertz. He’s coming back. If he plays for two more years here, we get nothing. So maybe we better lower the buyout figure down to a number that he’ll agree to so that we can at least get something.”
Who knows—Kahn could even be in on the ruse. After all, the Wolves and their fan base would be best suited for patience, what with 2 of the first 6 picks in the draft, and in Stage 1 on the Five Phase Rebuilding Process.
And it makes sense to do from Rubio’s standpoint, too. Either way, the cost of moving over here is reduced by at least a couple million dollars. If the ACB team doesn’t cave right now, the worst case is he plays in Spain for another year or two (meanwhile, his NBA team stays in the lotto a little longer, getting even better players to put around him once the buyout is down to little or nothing).
Nobody disagree with me on this, because this notion will help me get to sleep tonight.
Rooting for a Rubio Revolucion since roughly 10:20 a.m. on June 24th, 2009
OK I won't disagree
I agree that it’s odd. He must have known that MN was a possibility. Further, if you take his comments at face value, it isn’t the fact that he wasn’t picked at 2 for the money that is causing this. “Depends on who holds my rights…”
Taking that on its face, it’s that he doesn’t want to play for MN. OK, well, maybe. But…OKC? Sacramento? I don’t want to front, but…really? I don’t know, it all seems bizarre. I acknowledge that MN is not the world’s best situation, but Sac is terrible and…well…have you ever been to Sacramento?
On the other hand, I have to say, when I was watching the draft, he didn’t look very happy when his name was called. He smiled, but it looked like one of those smiling through a toothache smiles.
Here’s another possibility (and now I’m disagreeing with you): maybe Kahn didn’t trade up to 2-3 because Fegan told him that Rubio didn’t want Minny. But then, when he dropped, Kahn had no choice.

You said you wouldn't disagree
but I can see your point on Point #2. Especially after watching the footage from the 7/11 Security Cam hooked up in the Wolves War Room. Something about their “elation” told that they already knew what kind of turbulence lay ahead.

Sorry for venting, but Christ@#R$ Could we just once have some untarnished good fortune? Could we get the best guy and have him show up without 20 pounds of drama in a 10 pound bag?
I mean, COME FREAKING ON. I’m a calm, rational guy, but is it too much to freaking ask? Every 14 years or so for something to go freaking right? I mean, KG was a freaking miracle, but that was 1995. Couldn’t something just go right?

Also!
I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt on the awkward smile after he was picked by the Wolves. First, I didn’t think it was that bad (of course, it was hard for me to tell because I was jumping up and down and screaming in my family room). Second, he’s 18. Third, the kid’s a demon on the court—but off it, he’s shy. Super shy. He even said so during some of the video that was shot before the draft. Fourth, he’s in another continent, under the bright lights, wearing LeBron James’s suit, and nine cameras are in his face. If it were me, I’d just be worrying about tripping as I walked up the steps to the stage.
But in hindsight, yes. Once Rubio’s name was called at the draft, the Wolves should have cued “Mama” from TV’s What’s Happening to come barrelling out of nowhere to swallow him up in a slobbering, tearful hug, shouting, “Praise Jesus!”

The boy is a prolific interviewee
How many interviews has this kid had in the hours since the draft? And, has he said anything that wasn’t said several times before?
Answers: many and no
We need to quit thinking of him as a Free agent. We own his rights. If he wants to play in the NBA it is with us. DEAL. :D
exactly....
…it needs to be framed as if he’s simply in the minor leagues.

Fegan is the key...
He is pulling the strings. He is telling Ricky what to say. He is the guy who wins big if Ricky goes to a major media market.
I hope some of the media dolts get through to him. But I suppose he will do a hermit act to the media.
Meanwhile, I would be surprised if Fegan and Kahn are not in some kind of contact. They will both keep quiet about what is really happening.
he key question remains: Does Fegan represent Rubio in Europe? In negotiations with other teams? Only in promo deals if Ricky stays in Europe?
Fegan is the guy who will decide what happens. He;s probably bummed about the MN pick because he would have to pay for Ricky’s mom’s apartment, plus another one so her friends and family could come and visit often.
If Ricky went to Philly, no problem, she’d feel at home in South Philly.
At home in South Philly?
Is she Italian? Fantastic market. Really unbelievable. Plus Geno’s Steaks. Yum.
I agree that Fegan is a central actor here. However, I do not believe he represents Rubio in Europe, (though I’m not totally certain of this).
I also don’t understand the idea that it has to do with market size, really. That’s not the world we live in anymore. With the way communication is now, you don’t have to be in NY or the like to be a megastar. I can’t freaking find a channel without Peyton Manning trying to sell me something every 5 minutes. And etc.

“A little birdie said Ricky Rubio and his father were to fly to Minneapolis on Saturday to quietly meet with Timberwolves President David Kahn, who was to welcome the team’s top draft pick to Minnesota and chat about beginning his NBA future here.”

Something feels dirty about this.
It’s the first time Walters’ little birdie delivered news I hoped was true.
Wow.
Walters says, “Assuming he were to sign a four-year contract, as expected, the Wolves would have restricted rights for an additional two seasons, and that would be worth nearly $8 million more.”
As a journalism major, these things make me hurt inside.

I swear to God, as I was driving to Brainerd today in the rain, I thought to myself “I hope Rubio doesn’t fly into town today and see this dreariness.” Then, in the afternoon, it turned beautiful.
Let’s hope he came in after 3pm, if he came in at all.

Hope that's true...
I’ll feel a lot better about Rubio ending up in a Wolves uni if he actually visits the state of Minnesota. If not, his mind is already made up and probably can’t be changed.
Yep
I was resigned to no direct contact. Figured the agent wouldn’t let this happen. If he’s willing to be face to face with the Wolves himself, as opposed to his agent handling everything, it makes me feel a lot better too,
I don’t know. I have little faith in Shooter, though as Doogie points out, he does have contacts, presumably.

Shooter's story
I have no idea if it’s true or not…but I know he has good Wolves sources…and do remember, he nailed the Favre surgery story…he is capable.
"it will also depend on which team holds my rights"
Rubio mentions the team that holds his rights in the answer to both questions, but I wonder if he means:
- the team that holds my rights in the NBA as the answer to the first question
- the team that holds my rights in the Spanish league as the answer to the second question
rather than referring to the Wolves when answering both questions.
So, perhaps, he means right now he’s likely to return to Spain because of the buyout, but if something happens in the Spanish league (isn’t his Spanish team broke?) he might play in the NBA this year?
The “which is Minnesota at the moment” comment is simply matter-of-fact based on the general speculation that his NBA rights might be traded.
(Trying to be as optimisitic as possible.)
