Q-Rich
Wow. Another expiring contract.
Frees up roster space too.

An acceptable trade, that is.
Q can score and adds size to the 2/3 position.

holy shiz-nit
whoa. I guess the Clippers want Bassy to back up Davis. Goodbye Mark Madsen! It’s too bad the last line of the trade wasn’t: and the Clippers returned the Twolves top 10 protected first round pick.
I will miss Bassy. I hope the dude explodes into a legit finisher and shooter in LA.

Well, if what Eric says is true then it’s a pretty practical move.
That said, I’m gonna miss the all-beef Craig Smith Sandwich dropping in floaters and taking guys off the dribble like a SF.

I was never fond of the Rhino.
He took far too many minutes away from Love. Plus, we needed desperately to clear out our logjam of 4s.
by BVP on Jul 20, 2009 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Rhino gave up every point he made
He was a likeable, and recognizable, player, but the guy’s defensive problems made him a Gary Trent bench player at his best. The minutes we spent with him in the starting lineup under McHale caused my teeth to be sore.
by feral on Jul 20, 2009 3:00 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
He'll never be a starter
But he’s proven himself more than worthy of consistent backup’s minutes.
His situation went from bad to worse with the Washington trade. I’m happy for him to have the opportunity to be one of 2 PFs instead of 8, playing in his home town.

Rubio?
Do you think they’re more confident about Rubio coming over? They wouldn’t go into the season with Bobby Brown as the backup PG would they?
by mjfan02 on Jul 20, 2009 2:33 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I think this indicates that the Wolves think they're likely to get him over
But should he not, there’s still plenty of space for the Wolves to operate. They only have 12 guys under contract without Rubio. They could go pick up Anthony Carter, whose always had a very good PPR. Hell, even if they get Rubio I think they should buyout Brown and sign Carter to a one year deal.

Denver fans would be huge Wolves fans for the day if they signed Anthony Carter.
I do think AC is a good backup PG, but he doesn’t get a lot of love from Nuggets Nation.

I doubt Brown gets bought out
regardless of whether Rubio comes over this year or not.
We just freed up two roster spaces, which means he’s no longer a burden. We’re not trying to win now, so we don’t need to upgrade Brown to Carter or Watson.
I think the season’s depth chart reads either
Flynn/Watson/Brown
or Rubio/Flynn/Brown

AC left here with a cloud over his head
Back in the day I said the Wolves should have started AC at the point for his defensive play. He left the franchise originally after he had a DUI incident. Not sure if Uncle Glen would look favorably on his returning….
(And, good news part, I’m not sure it matters what Glen thinks about individual personnel decisions at the moment. Woot!)

Saves Telfair's
salary for 2010-11, though if this is it, it adds to the payroll this year by $1.5 million or so,
I hope Bassy gets good run as Davis’ backup—he probably needed to go. They will probably buy out/waive Madsen.
Richardson isn’t actually very good. He’s a volume 3 shooter with marginal percentages and does very little else. He does fulfill a need—as a guy who we know can actually play shooting guard in the NBA. He’s clearly not a longterm guy here though.
He isn’t just Quentin Richardson—he’s also Quentin Richardson’s Expiring Contract.

Wasn't it a lock Telfair was going to opt out?
I mean, he could’ve made more than $2.7m alot of places (including NYC).
For me, it depends on what Kahn does with Q-Rich. As QREC, he has alot of value (consolodation for teams with less roster space) than someone like Madsen, but I see Smith and Bassy as assets.

You think Telfair was a hot commodity?
The 2010 free agent class, under economic pressures but (in theory, in prospect) loaded up with much larger names, was poised to undervalue Bassy if anything. He’s a second-string point, no starter.
Under the circumstances I’d have put down a small amount of money that Sebastian would wait a year to test the market under calmer circumstances.
by feral on Jul 20, 2009 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
not now, not then
Bassy had barely proven himself on a bad team. We’re not talking about an elite here.
There were so many PGs in this year’s draft, pretty much everyone who wanted one got one — except for the Clips who took Griffin. And after next year, those guys will have experience. If you like veterans — there’s still a bunch of free agents out there whose names you’ll recognize.
As Kahn mentioned, the Clipps were likely sniffing around some other options.
So from both Sebastian and Kahn’s viewpoint, Sebastian’s value is highest right now with the Clippers. Nobody else on the horizon.
What worries me is that the Wolves (ostensibly) only had a couple of days to consider Q-RIch and do their “due diligence”. I think it is imperative for the Wolves to avoid bad apples in the locker room.

Did Wolves get money in the trade?
The original QRICH trade from the Knicks to Memphis included cash to Memphis due to difference in salary between QRICH and Mlicic. Has anyone heard if that cash was forwarded to LA and then to MN to make up for him being overpaid?

Nothing to get excited about.
All they did was balance the roster. Hilariously, the team that just sent out Zach Randolph to clear front court space brought in two more bigs. Well played, LA.
I can’t get on board the Richardson train too much. Considering his falloff the last two years, I’d be shocked if he isn’t backing up Ellington by the end of the season.

We're sending out 3 quality guys
I think that this is being lost in all the talk of roster balance and expirings. Telfair, Smith, and Madsen all played hard here, were good teammates, and signed to reasonable extensions (well, not Madsen, but his is expiring). I’m sad to see them go.
On the other hand, they deserved better. Telfair and Smith will be the unquestioned backups for LAC, but they won’t have to worry about getting pushed to third on the depth chart. Madsen was happy here, but he’s going back home to the Staples Center.
It’s not a bad trade, but it does make me a little sad.

Madsen adds zero (0!) on the court. Nothing! He failed to reach double figures in scoring last year. Not for anyone game, for the whole season! Second year in a row!
Telfair is a decent backup, but didn’t we just draft two point guards? (Rubio is coming!)
Smith is a decent role player, but our best two players currently under contract play his position and he’s undersized and can’t defend.
I like the move.

from a purely analytical standpoint.
But part of being a fan is liking the players on your team. I would have liked to have kept Madsen around, obviously not for his contributions on the court, but for his leadership, chivalry, Spanish speaking, etc. Bassy and Rhino could have been long-time Timberwolves if not for the circumstances.

But when it comes down to it, it’s like the old Seinfeld joke - you’re just rooting for the laundry. I’d have a problem rooting for someone convicted of a felony, but beyond that, it’s more about how they play. Smith/Telfair/Madsen are generally good guys, which is nice, but I also feel good that the team did them right with this deal and made a deal that can help them by balancing the roster and clearing a bit of salary from the ’10’11 payroll.

Some one has to shoot 3s and Ellington can’t do that all by himself. Besides, Q can still be an attractive piece to some team looking to make a playoff run… so a movable and somewhat attractive player for trade deadline to go with that expiring.

Hidden highlights:
1. In less than six weeks, Kahn has reduced the roster down to just five players who were here on opening day last year (Brewer, Love, Cardinal, Gomes, Jefferson). I wouldn’t be shocked if there were more moves made before opening day this year.
2. If you believe John Hollinger’s PER, this trade cost the Wolves four more wins, so next year’s draft pick should be even better!
3. Disregarding Blond Ricky and Songalia, there are now exactly four players who are sure to be paid by the Wolves starting in 2010 (AlJeff, Gomes, Flynn, Ellington), and three with tiny team options (Love, Oly, and CoBrew). Even with a 14 man roster, that could mean at least seven new faces on the roster by this time next year.

Comment on Hollingers trade assessment
I can’t quite figure out what he does, but I think he also factors in who else plays the same position. I made a deal with Bobby Brown that cost the Wolves two wins…huh? On a 24 win team??
Anyhow, I think if Rubio were already on the Wolves roster the minus four wins would be closer to minus one or two. I tried a few different deals with Smith and/or Madsen that resulted in one less win even though the Wolves were getting useless players in exchange.

Trade
Totally sweet trade. We got rid of bodies and got a decent expiring in return. None of the guys we traded is better than Richardson. I hate Smith and Telfair. And Madsen only grew on me by writing letters in Spanish to Ricky Rubio. Telfair and Smith have deals that extend beyond 2010, so this actually clears more space for us. Clips must have really liked both players, as this doesn’t make sense for them, otherwise. The Wolves don’t need 3 mediocre vets chewing into rookie minutes, so getting one servicable G/F is ideal. Plus, we have more space in 2010. Love the move.
As for Richardson, he’s totally solid. He’s 6’6’’ and has put up 15 pts 7 rebounds during his best year. He’s got good size, but isn’t exactly fast. He’s a black Mike Miller, though, he’s never shot 40% from the 3. Either way, we needed some depth at G/F and this helps. I’m just happy we got rid of 3 bodies. Telfair was okay, but Smith is so undersized. He’s totally redundant with Kevin Love on the team. If you want to sub out K Love, you’ve got to bring in someone with length.
I also like what this does for keeping Pecherov. It would be nice to see him get 10-15 a game at the 3.
Getting rid of bodies and 2010 cap space is key on this deal. Smith and Telfair had totally reasonable contracts for their production, but still, they are at best NBA role players with neither deserving more than 10 minutes a game. Maybe Telfair, but definitely not Smith or Madsen. Richardson has started for most of his career. He is going to be SWEET trade bait at the end of the year. I’m not sure we’ll get a Bosh or Wade, but we can get an awesome player with 2-3 years on his contract at the deadline if a team is giving up and rebuilding.
Kahn just fleeced another team. I love this guy.

grats, you said it better than I could think it. Sorry to see old friend go, but this definitely improves the team 3 different ways, and addresses my biggest worry — what are we gonna do with all those bigs & PGs?
Moving some good contributors was essential. It is actually good that we got out from under Maddog & Rhino. Bassy woulda been solid if we had not drafted 2 PGs, but hey, we did and after summer season, now I know why.

Richardson
My main hope is that he doesn’t get to many minutes. The Wolves need to evaluate the long-term futures of Rubio/Flynn together, and Brewer. So this shouldn’t open up a ton of minutes at 2 when one considers Wayne Ellington. Richardson’s value is in a nice, juicy, expiring contract near the trade deadline.
