What is Kahn thinking?!
No one has posted about this yet so I will:
What is Kahn thinking taking on Quentin Richardson for Madsen, Telfair, and Smith?!
The only advantages I see are getting a few players down to maybe sign Carney or other and getting a SG.
Now we are left with Bobby Brown and Flynn as PGs. And isn't Kahn supposed to be in Europe? So unless he just got confirmation that Rubio is coming over, or a team really really wanted Quentin that we didn't know about this trade is absolutely terrible! ESPN's trade machine even ranks us 4 losses lower because of this trade. Ok so we know thats kind of unlikely. Telfair was in no means responsible for 4 wins and I don't think Quentin is a detriment to our team (although he does shoot just under .400 for his career). But still, WHY would anyone in their right minds do this? We are taking on salary in this deal and getting rid of a terrific backup PG in Telfair and leaving ourselves with Bobby Brown as our backup.
Richardson can't be traded with other players for 2 months so I don't see him as a means of making another deal unless someone is willing to wait 2 months to get something done.
We also just stole some minutes from Wayne Ellington while throwing those same minutes down the drain in Richardson. He has been in the league for 9 years I believe, and we have no reason to think that he is due for a breakout year. He is a volume shooter through and through, and as his career FG% shows, he isn't that impressive of one.
Let's hope Kahn has something up his sleeve or else he just wasted some nice trade pieces in my eyes.

Here’s what Kahn is thinking: IT’S ABOUT QUALITY, NOT QUANTITY.
1. Mark Madsen: great human being, a total bum on the basketball court.
2. Sebastian Telfair: BUM. Can’t shoot, can’t finish. BUM.
3. Craig Smith: TWEENER. Good around the basket, good off of the bench, but isn’t gonna be a starter.
You guys will be thrilled if/when Kahn is able to take that expiring deal and transform it into a star player (via trade) or a key FA.
Yeah hopefully thats the case and he has tremendous foresight
Or maybe we sit here with an even bigger bum, but one who needs the ball and will get the ball and will throw the ball away.
Telfair is an extremely capable backup, still very young and on the upside of his career. Craig Smith gave GREAT production when he came into the game. Madsen, while terrible, was a good locker room guy, a good cheerleader (he puts the TWolves dancers to shame), and he spoke spanish. I would not complain too much if we got him at the veteran’s minimum next year. Not a penny more though because I never want to see him set foot on a basketball court again.
All three of those deals were expiring contracts. The only advantage as I have pointed out before is that it went from 3 to 1 (which is easier to make a deal with, but we have plenty of bigger expiring salaries).
Um...
" I would not complain too much if we got him at the veteran’s minimum next year. Not a penny more though because I never want to see him set foot on a basketball court again."
why sign him if don’t want him to play?

A solid team has an 8 player rotation
But there are how many spots on a team? 14? 15? 16? somewhere in there. I want a guy who we dont have to pay much who doesnt demand minutes and is a good locker room presence who can teach guys good work ethic.
That's all good and well
but
“I never want to see him set foot on a basketball court again”
and
I want a guy who we dont have to pay much who doesnt demand minutes
are not the same thing.
Only cowards pray for rain.
Why aren't they?
I want him to sit on our bench all game like he did for most of this year. I want him on the bench, not on the court.
He can't teach guys basketball
He can teach them work ethic. Lead by example. But my friend recently brought to my attention how annoying Madsen must be always talking about God. Finding sneaky and annoying ways to credit every win to God. Maybe they were happy to see him go, think how awkward that would be to be around if you want to go out drinking or partying with your teammates….
I may have changed my stance on him for that purpose alone.
Not all three deals were expiring..
Bassy has a player option for $2.7 million in 2010-2011, so the Wolves added one mill this season to save next season. And also cleared much needed roster spots.
now we have
even larger expiring contracts
telfair smith and madsen are obviously not pieces of a championship team
kahns not trying to win 5-10 more games this year
hes trying to win it all in 3-5 years
So if he is trying to win in 3-5 years,
then why are we taking on 1M more in salary this year? To trade for a star? Obviously that would not be the case then.
Telfair is a serviceable backup. He has a great assist to turnover ratio and he is more than competent at running an offense. Again, he is on the upside of his career and would be a nice piece in that 3-5 years at 2-3M per year.
I dont disagree that Smith isnt a part of a championship team, but he was one of the most productive backup 4s we had.
Madsen isnt a part of a championship team? Hmmm, the Laker’s gave him some sort of a ring, I think it was maybe possibly for winning a championship with them… Madsen has a part on any and every team, just not on the court.
I don’t mind getting rid of these guys, its just the fact that it was for Richardson. We could have gotten something more from someone… Telfair hurts me the most I think. I think the kid will get a ring before his career is over (as a backup).
I know we are tired of hearing about this, but it’s all about cap space. The Clips liked Bassy and we didn’t like his PO for 2010-11. QR expires this year so we traded matrching contracts for cap space next summer. Hopefully Kahn will turn this space into a player or three that improve the hapless wolves. If not, then we were Kahned and McHale did this trade. . .
Sometimes the obvious is hidden.

Interesting tweet from Telfair 7/14/09
“MN is talking lk they wnt 2 win I’m happy abt that”
(5:41 PM Jul 14th from Tweetie)
Draw your own conclusions.
What a professional
I couldnt find that particular post you were talking about cuz his page is ridiculous to try to read, but I do think he is leaving with his head held high and with nothing but good things to say for us. We’ll miss him.
Good luck Bassy
Richardson can be traded
If he’s the only piece the Wolves give up going the other way. Otherwise, how could he have been traded 3 times in the past month?

Kahn's moves
I am a bit perplexed by all the posters who say that Telfair, Madsen & Smith are not parts of championship teams, so losing them means little towards building that kind of team. So how, exactly, do Thomas, Songalia, Gomes, Brewer, Cardinal, Brown, et al, rate on your proposed championship team? Kahn has taded away five players who played a LOT of minutes for the team and replaced them with what, exactly? Oh yeah, I remember, the promise that somewhere down the road will be that killer deal make it all come together. And all those big name FA’s for next year? The ones I saw listed by other posters are not the best players on their teams and those teams aren’t championship teams, either.
I agree about those three
They may not be starters on a contender, but neither are over half of the guys on the Lakers, on the Celtics on the Cavs, etc etc. They are role players, and pretty damn good ones. Telfair is a backup level player on a contender, Madsen is a locker room guy though and through. Craig Smith is the guy who makes everyone else happy to be on a team. He makes people friends instead of just teammates. Not to mention, he is also a tremendous offensive player for a second rounder.
I honestly have no idea what your problem is
I might just agree with you on next to nothing, but we come out ahead financially, none of the guys we traded are anywhere near irreplaceable, we flat out just didn’t need any of them, and we had to get some sort of warm, breathing body at SG (which might end up being someone else). As far as Madsen getting a ring, what are you getting at? OK, he might have had a supporting role as a clown, but his contribution to their winning was 0.0% Bassy’s rate of importance to that theoretical contender you have him as a backup on wouldn’t be much higher. I understand developing a sort of relationship with players on your team, but we need new ones, and this gives us more flexibility. This isn’t the most earth-shattering deal I’ve seen, but it’s clearly a positive one.
Fair enough
But like you said, I would prefer to get a core group of players, whether it be the starters or not, and try to at least stick with them. Bassy being one of those I would stick with and Craig being another. Bassy is less replaceable of the two if you ask me. I have already said that I think Craig Smith makes this team more enjoyable to be on and I stick by that. That can not be said of too many guys in a business like this.
I was being a little facetious with the comment about Madsen, mostly just pointing out that it’s not just on-the-court players that we need. He shows the young guys some good work ethic and he is a great example of a good teammate. In order to add to a team, you don’t have to be on the floor, otherwise why would teams be so interested in a good coach or good veteran presence. And he is cheap enough at the veterans minimum.
We obviously did this trade for financial reasons, but sometimes a player is worth more than his numbers or his salary (not very often….). When we draft a guy like Rubio, he isnt going to want to stay because MN is an attractive place to be. He will want to stay because guys like Craig Smith can make his experience an enjoyable one and he gets attached to the team more than the market and the weather. Without winters above 40 degrees on average, we need to count on the people to convince guys to come here and stay here. Craig Smith did this very cheaply. He is worth more to me in the locker room than on the court. Much more than his salary gives him, but luckily we don’t have to pay him more for talents like that so his services are valuable and cheap. We win. Not anymore.
When we are competing for a championship, we will hopefully have a solidified 8-10 man rotation. We have more roster spots than that and those spots can be taken up by cheap guys who do more than on the court stuff. Hopefully we can get Craig back for cheap when his deal expires next year. I would welcome him back with open arms…. Scratch that, I would personally beg him to come back. Madsen is another guy who I would pay a veterans minimum but ONLY if he agreed not to play a minute ever again. Like you said, Bassy is replaceable, but I would rather stick with a guy who has a spot on a contender so we can at least get something truly special started than just keep replacing a guy that we will eventually need anyways. Team unity is underrated. Thats why teams like Jordan’s Bulls, Duncans Spurs, Stockton/Malone’s Jazz, Chauncey’s Pistons have been able to do so well in the past with just 2 stars or bubble stars and some nice role players instead of todays Lakers/Celtics/Suns/etc who need 3 or 4 allstars before they can make a run at it.
It's just math
Including OT each NBA game has about 100 minutes. Big Al and Love get at least 70 at PF/C. If healthy Etan Thomas gets 10 at C, leaving a total of 20 minutes. Just not enough to go around between Smith, Songaila, Mad Dog, and Cardinal. I also like Smith, but he has limited ability and was the most tradable in the reserve group.
Another math thing – Even though rosters have been upped to 15, I see a change of thought in the NBA. Most teams will stay in the 12-14 range because there just aren’t enough minutes and they can save money. Also, the players over 12 on the roster will not be expected to play much, they will be stashed project players like Siler who may contribute in a few years.
One last math thing – By getting rid of Bassy the Wolves know they save $2.5 million next year. Even if they trade a couple expirings like QRich at the trade deadline, they will have $2.5 million more to spend next summer on a free agent or trading for a player under contract. If they have $10 million available next summer they can get a much better player than if they have $7.5 million available.
They can take Telfair and Madsen
Just give me back the Rhino! I still insist he makes MN a more enjoyable place to be for a player.
Whatever, he is back home and I hope he is happy. He will be sorely missed by me.
Great Trade!
Lowers the number of players on our roster. Doesn’t get rid of the guys that are part of the future (Flynn, Rubio, Love, Jefferson-although I would gladly trade Jeffeson for a better defensive center like Biedrins and a high caliber 2 or 3), still leaves us with some quality role players (Ellington, Gomes, Brewer-let’s hope) and the rest will be gone anyway. We don’t need three more role players (I’ll give Maddog the benefit of the doubt) even if we do like them, which I do especially Bassy as a backup. Also, we are in a better position to make future trades for a great 3 or 2 and bring in a shot blocking center (I hope). I want likeable people as players, but that alone is not going to win a championship and an entire team of them hasn’t won us one so far.
