Report: Minnesota businesses bring $4 mil to the table in Rubio negotiations

The full article is available below the fold with a Google translation.  Also, the title of this post is the best I could piece together from the translation.  If there is a better one, please let me know and I will make an adjustment.  There also is mention of a one-week deadline.  Any translation in the comments would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: We don't deal in unnamed sources on this site but we have been told by several Spanish readers that there are mixed messages coming out in the Spanish media about whether or not any businesses or promises from businesses have been part of the negotiations.  By all accounts we have seen and heard, an offer has been made but we have zero clue what is in it, especially with regard to any possible corporate involvement.  We remind our readers to take everything in this report, and reports like it, with a grain of salt and remember what are the knowns, unknowns, known unknowns and...well, you know the rest.

UPDATE ii: Jerry Zgoda has more on the $4 mil issue:

A Spanish media report said Wednesday that Kahn went to Spain with a list of Minnesota companies willing to sign Rubio to endorsement deals for a sum totaling $4 million, which could pay all or most of a renegotiated deal with DKV Joventut.

NBA deputy commissioner Adam Silver reportedly was involved in a meeting last week in Las Vegas that included Kahn, Fegan and Wolves owner Glen Taylor.

Before he left for Spain, Kahn was asked if he was headed overseas with a list of endorsement deals for Rubio that would get the buyout solved, and if Silver was involved in the meeting to advise what is permitted within NBA rules in such matters.

Kahn answered no to both questions.

Due to the CBA, I believe this is to be expected.  He followed with this:

"We cannot circumvent the salary cap and we cannot pay him more than $500K," Kahn said in a text message. "Like any player, he is entitled to obtain his own sponsorship deals locally, nationally."

Nothing in there about Fegan having a list, which is completely within the bounds of what is acceptable.  Here is what I think is going on: An offer has been made to Joventut that is below the max number on the buyout but above anything they have been offered in the past.  Everyone is now waiting for Joventut to say yes or no before the next move can be made.  Ideally, Rubio would be able to keep as much of his NBA salary as possibly while using endorsement deals as collateral against the buyout.  Again, please keep in mind that this is just my opinion.  We still don't officially know if an offer has been made and if so, what is in it.

Star-divide

are meeting today and tomorrow to try to bring in Badalona

Los Timberwolves vienen a por Ricky con cuatro millones The Timberwolves come to four million by Ricky

  • · El Real Madrid no llegaría a esa cifra, pero lo seguirá intentando hasta el final · El agente Dan Fegan ha conseguido el dinero financiado por empresas locales · Ricky, en su campus, entrena tiro con un preparador personal Real Madrid will not reach that figure, but it will continue until the end Agent Dan Fegan did the money funded by local businesses Ricky, on its campus, shooting a trained personal coach

A few weeks ago, Ricky Rubio made an offer to the DKV Joventut: buy his freedom for four million dollars (the change today, some 2.8 million euros), their rights when returning to Europe and transfer your image to DKV Insurance for one year. At that time, Penya said no, and continues over time and, while talking to Real Madrid in the United States landing was brewing.

Dan Fegan, the player's representative, and David Kahn, president of the Minnesota Timberwolves are in Badalona and Ricky to take. The transfer of Sebastian Telfair to the Clippers opened the door even further for the Minneapolis franchise, which is making a huge effort to get the player.
Kahn, who comes, as said, "help" comes with Fegan, who comes under their arms agreements with local companies in Minnesota worth around four million euros, which will be offered to DKV Joventut to let the boy go.

La famosa demanda The famous claim
Jordi Cairó, technical director of the Penya, recognizes that the Timberwolves come to make positive things, "but that the club" not aware "that Ricky has withdrawn the claim. La realidad es que no se ha retirado porque el chico está en un campus de El Collell y no ha podido firmar la retirada. The reality is that there has been withdrawn because the guy is one of the Collell campus and could not sign the withdrawal.

Indeed, the DKV Joventut follows hard on the negotiations. A few days ago, Sito Alonso dined with Ricky and told him that he depart the team and would not play if it did not withdraw the demand and decided to remain in Badalona. The debt to finance the club's green requires him to sell the player, but has proved to be a hard nut to crack. Meanwhile, it keeps the thread with Real Madrid to test how far they can go. Various sources estimate the white supply between 2.5 and three million and a multi-contract with an exit price to the NBA in two years.
In any case, the white team never reached the four million, but moves quickly these days to try to get the player.

Ricky has clearly not want this situation to continue for a further week. Isolated on its campus by Collell (Girona) that assists these days, but on top of everything, the players practiced Jarinn Akan, shooting coach who works for the agency of the American player.

The two sides will meet today and tomorrow to negotiate. On the side of the Timberwolves are confident that this trip, which departed the franchise negotiation to sign a new coach, serving the final itself. DKV Joventut in the state that the negotiations will last, because they will speed up your options and have a hand in clause 5.7 million. In Madrid, meanwhile, hope not. Remain hopeful that with no agreement and the will of the player, who is leaving the NBA and not excluding anything, not a reality right now and is at least two years in Spain.

My translation from another post

It’s just straight to the point, I didn’t feel like translating it all, don’t have that much time…

According to Marca Kahn and Fegan have an offer for Joventut consisting on 4M€ (over 6M$) for Ricky’s buyout (which is 5.7M€)

That’s the biggest offer Joventut has received, as there are others from European teams, most prominently Real Madrid (always according to Marca, which is always biased for Real Madrid).

The report says those 4M€ come from sponsor deals from businesses around Minnesota.

On the lawsuit: Ricky is in a small town running his camp and improving his shot with Jarinn Akana, a shooting coach who works for Fegan’s agency, so he hasn’t had the chance to sign the papers to retire the lawsuit against Joventut, what he’s going to do according to sources.

Jordi Cairó, from Joventut’s staff said that the Wolves arrived adding some positive things.

There are still two days of meetings left, and Ricky’s will is to fix all this within a week, but Joventut is expected to make it as long as possible to get the most out of it.

I had a feeling local business would offer something.

I mean, there has to be the usual suspects that are willing to offer sponsorship deals based on Rubio’s playing in the NBA in general and play for Minnesota specifically.

It demonstrates to Joventut

Ricky’s earning capacity in MN and I would think it gives Joventut an opportunity to get a bigger payout.

But most importantly it demonstrates a commitment to Rubio by the Wolves and may well allow the buyout to be spaced for longer than two years. Rubio doesn’t have to play gratis in any year and joventut has an income stream over that period.

Only cowards pray for rain.

by Auswolf on Jul 22, 2009 3:22 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

The timeframe was an obvious point of negotiation

As many times as we’ve heard the whole “His first two years would be free” thing, if you space things out Rubio is just paying a (significant, granted) percentage of his contact. He’s still earning well more than the pittance he’d been pulling down in Spain. That’s the crucial point.

by revprodeji on Jul 22, 2009 3:43 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

8.8M$, that's 5.7M€

5.7M€
- 4M€ from sponsors
- 350k€ from Wolves (the 500k$ limit)
-—————
1.35M€ left (around 2M$)

If they still want the full buyout, Ricky can still get a loan, or reach an agreement about going back to Joventut if he ever comes back to Europe, or some deal with DKV, the insurance company that sponsors Joventut or something like that.

This looks very promising

We don't have anything...

…other than “sources” at this point. From everything we can tell, it is legit and an offer appears to have been made and it is “substantial”. That being said, I won’t put anything above the fold until someone actually reports it or we get someone on record.

My personal take is that they aren’t ever going to get the full buyout. No one is going to pay that ransom money but this is as good as it is going to get…if it’s true. From what we can tell, it’s legit. That being said, we urge people to take everything with a grain of salt until something on-the-record happens. All of this ends up where we have been all along: waiting for Joventut to agree to a reduced buyout.

Where's the time pressure for Joventut, again?
All of this ends up where we have been all along: waiting for Joventut to agree to a reduced buyout.

Where are Joventut’s financial pressures, in terms of timing? We’re waiting on them, as you say, and I’m not clear about what dates they’re going to be approaching before they bite. Supposedly they’ve got their tax problems, but are there specific deadlines attached to those?

Otherwise I get the feeling they’re going to play Rubio’s camp along until various NBA-related deadlines start to put more pressure on the situation. We might all want to clear this up in a week, as Rubio supposedly does, but Joventut’s interest is in getting as much as they can. They’re in position to make my summer less eager anticipation and more strained expectation….

by feral on Jul 22, 2009 4:00 PM CDT up reply actions

it was...

…the lawsuit date. i haven’t seen anything that details their books so i don’t know what the financial pressures are. i don’t know if they have any deadlines on the tax issue.

by Stop-n-Pop on Jul 22, 2009 4:02 PM CDT up reply actions

So they avoided the most pressing date before we got to this point?

That was pretty smooth of them.

The cynical side of me thinks I’d better resolve myself to waiting out the summer, and maybe a week into training camp. Dang. If Kahn gets this done before August 15th it’ll be a coup.

by feral on Jul 22, 2009 5:18 PM CDT up reply actions

I think

the time pressure is that they don’t want to push this thing to the point where Rubio says … well f*ck you then, we’re going to court and I’m not cancelling the court order for anything less than a reduction of the buyout to 50% (or something like that).

So they wanna push and try as much as they can get WHILE still trying to avoid going to court. It’s not so much a time pressure but a “lets see how much patience they got” pressure.

We got Rubio!

Color me a bit skeptical

If Minnesota businesses are putting up the money, why are we hearing about via a rumor in a Spanish paper? Wouldn’t someone here in Minnesota have picked up a whiff of the story?

Maybe I am getting old an crotchety (actually there is no “maybe” about it), but I am skeptical of all the unsourced stuff appearing in Spanish papers, good or bad.

Not sure the league would look favorably on this

The $500K limit towards buyouts might be outdated, but currently it’s there. Imagine Nike or Adidas paying Rubio not only a sponsorship deal but also money so he can play in Portland where their world/US headquarters are (Eugene).

I don't see anything wrong

with David Kahn acting as bag man for corporate MN.

There’s certainly no reason for companies to trumpet that they are willing to pay for Ricky’s endorsement.

Basically, he’s just carrying the message “Look everyone, here’s $4M in endorsement money. It’s real — let’s make a deal”.

Appears to be an endorsement deal for Joventut Insurance

If the translation is correct, Rubio’s image can be used for a year by Joventut Insurance. This may be how part of the buyout is reduced, and of course it could negotiated to a few more years. Great idea if it is legit.

If you run the marketing department of a few MN corporations (say General Mills and Target) what would it be worth to fill Target Center every night? Think of it this way, say four companies have already committed a total of $2 million to be promoted at Wolves games this year, based on an average 10,000 fans a night. How much more is this already locked in advertising worth if the average increase to 16,000 fans a night?
Also avoids NBA scrutiny since the advertising was agreed to long before Rubio was even a possibility to come here!
Add that to the cereal boxes and this could make sense.

New ad with Rubio

posted on youtube today. A Livestrong/Tour de France thing. Maybe most notable if you’re a total FC Barcelona dork like myself, because Pique and Bisquets (from the futbol wing of the club) are in it with him. Juan Carlos Navarro as well.

This is illustrative

of why I find it hard to believe he’d sign with Real Madrid. Sports and politics go hand-in-hand over there, and it’s pretty unheard of for a Catalan bro to go sign with Franco’s team. Maybe it’s different in basketball, I doubt it though. DaniBCN could maybe help me out with this. Or maybe his parents moved from Madrid and he doesn’t feel strongly about that stuff, I don’t know.

by museum on Jul 22, 2009 10:05 PM CDT up reply actions

You are correct, sir

It’s pretty unusual for a català to sign with Real Madrid, in any sport, but Joventut has been an exception.

Barça and Real Madrid have the best known rivalry in european sports, but there are also local rivalries, and speaking of basketball, Barça and Joventut have a tough one (Barcelona and Badalona are divided by a river), and it’s more unlikely for a Joventut player to end up playing for Barça rather than Real Madrid.

Joventut always lacks money, and teams with strong soccer sections or local government sponsorship deals are always willing to spend for quality spanish players (ACB teams have a quantity of spanish players requirement for their rosters). Recent examples are Raül López or Álex Mumbrú.

About Ricky’s case, my list of worries are:

1. Unicaja Málaga – He wouldn’t upset fans because of politics or rivalries, and he’d reunite with coach Aíto García Reneses, his first ACB coach, and also the guy who discovered him, Rudy Fernandez, JC Navarro, Pau Gasol… Unicaja is performing big changes on their roster, and have been one of the best european teams of the last 8 years, usually advancing some rounds on both ACB and Euroleague playoffs. Also, Málaga is a warm, sunny beach city.

Look at Jorge Garbajosa having fun during his stay in Málaga:

2. Real Madrid – He’s el noi del Masnou, I find it very difficult for him to land in Madrid, his accent reveals spanish is his second language (for those who don’t know, in Catalunya there are two official languages: spanish and català). Mi ex used to work with Ricky’s mother, and they are a traditional catalonian family.

If he goes to Real Madrid, it would be just for economic reasons.

3. Barcelona – There’s a story about Ricky’s older brother (also with Joventut) losing a junior final against Barcelona, and a member of Barça’s staff telling them “see, you sould join our team if you want to success”, and after that Ricky promised he’d never play for Barcelona.
Also, add a rivalry that has lasted for eighty years.
I don’t think Ricky is going to sign with them.

And the most important fact: Ricky has many offers from Europe that include paying for his full buyout (the 500k rule is only for NBA teams) but he hasn’t even met other team’s officials, and that’s a clear sign that he wants to sign with the Wolves, and he will unless there’s no way to reach an agreement about his buyout.

Canishoopus endorsement

A source with knowledge has confirmed a website with MN ties has offered Rubio a cool mil over the next four years to endorse their website.
Ricky has agreed to tattoo canishoopus.com to each bicep.
He will also be featured in an ad campaign proclaiming that when he is stuck inside on cold winter nights he will be writing posts for canishoopis.com under the moniker “Blond Ricky”.

Seems like Ricky is gonna stay in Spain

First, sorry for my english.
I’m from barcelona and I just heard on the radio that the Wolves Joventut and have not reached any agreement and the negotiations have been broken. It seems that Ricky will continue this year around here.

DaniBCN, Do not say crap about being Spanish or Catalan. The surname “Rubio” is not exactly Catalan, Ricky is fully bilingual. Please do not try to divert attention to non-sport issues. If you remember, Real Madrid last year has 3 o 4 catalan players.

DaniBCN, first I think that it would be nice for everybody here if you write in English on this website.
Secondly, I have understood what you’ve written, but you said it would be very rare that Ricky was at Real Madrid because he’s Catalan and the only reason to go there is the economic one, which seems a very poor reasoning IMHO.

what the other guy who can read espanol and respond in ingles said!!!

by majinman on Jul 23, 2009 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm sorry for that

I was just trying to explain myself and thought you’d understand me better in spanish.

Translated: I don’t think you understood half of what I said before, I explained that it is more usual to see players from Joventut going to Real Madrid rather than Barcelona and used the examples of Raul Lupez and Mumbrú, who by the way are two of the most hated players over here.

I just wanted to make myself clear, I don’t like it when people say I’m “saying crap”.

Also, I don’t like spanish fans biased because of their favorite ACB team or their city.

Ricky’s first language is catalá, and that’s a fact, I don’t care if you like it or not, it’s easy to say when you listen to him speaking spanish, he mixes the grammar, something very common in people whose first language is català. He’s much more fluent speaking català.

Please, I’d rather avoid that kind of discussions over here, thanks :)

Ok, my friend

If you are happy thinking that there is no people bilingual, I’m not gonna try to change your mind.

The thing is that it would be a mess if finally Ricky don’t come to Minnesota.

by misterbakora on Jul 23, 2009 2:19 PM CDT reply actions

There are bilingual people

One cay say Rubio speaks Spanish fluently. However, it’s quite obvious – by the accent; by the grammar mistakes here and there – that Catalan is his first, day-to-day, language, not Castellano. DaniBCN is absolutely right.

Still, that’s not an issue. It’s not like Rubio is Puyol or something; I can’t see the Catalunya/Castilla rivalry playing any kind of role in regards to Rubio’s future, players from la Penya go to Real every time. If anything, I’d say that the Penya/Barça rivalry makes even less probable that he joins Barcelona.

Anyway, if Rubio was interested in playing for Madrid or Unicaja as anything more than a last resort, a deal would have been arranged already. Unless the negotiations with the Wolves completely bust – and it’d take months for that to happen – I don’t see Rubio heading there; and if he does, I think that reuniting with Aíto is his priority.

Taxes

Is there a benefit to Ricky if the businesses pay the endorsement money straight to Joventut ? That way Ricky doesn’t have to pay taxes on that money? I don’t know how they could justify the endorsement money going to pay his buyout, but it would seem like you could loose a lot of the money straight off the top if they pay Ricky the endorsement money and then he would have to pay taxes, and then use what is left to pay off the buyout.
