Free Agent 2s and 3s
When Kevin Pelton of Basketball Prospectus wasn't busy interviewing with SnP during the past few days, he was preparing an objective and subjective review of the free agents available this summer.
Of particular interest to Wolves fans will be fillers of the perceived holes the team has on the perimeter. Here is a summary of what he sees with free agent shooting guards and small forwards who might be of interest to the Wolves:
Shooting Guards
- Von Wafer Mini Ben Gordon who needs to prove that last season wasn't a fluke
- Rodney Carney Good athlete, but the only thing he can produce is points
- Morris Almond It didn't click for him in Utah, and it remains to be seen if it happens somewhere else
Small Forwards
- Marvin Williams Developed a better 3-ball last season, but low possession usage doesn't bode well
- Josh Childress Better than remembered, young enough, "worse players have gotten big money"
- Linas Kleiza Will have a long NBA career, and could end up as a free agent bargain somewhere
- Matt Barnes Needs to become a better 3-point shooter
Most of the other players are either below replacement level (Cartier Martin?) or out of the Wolves league (Lamar Odom).

I'll just add. . .
. . . that reading TSN Today that Morris has signed with the Knicks ( or will be soon) and that Carney is being wooed by as many as ten teams. We weren’t listed, but they didn’t list but 4 or 5 teams.
Linas, Josh and Marvin are the ones I’m most interested in.
Sometimes the obvious is hidden.
Me, too
but only at bargain prices. Otherwise, we wait. Plus, Linas’s description as a potential tweener who has difficulty keeping his man in front of him gives me some pause.

Yes
definately @ bargain prices. I’m sorry but I just keep seeing Linas sweet looking shot and he does play decent weakside help D. Maybe we could play a syracuse 2-3 zone. . .

Get Kleiza
And put him on the 3 with Brewer at the 2. I feel like those two could be a solid defensive combo.
No to undersized 2-guards or 3/4 tweeners...
Only Childress doesn’t fit into that category. Besides him, the 3s mentioned aren’t much different than Gomes. For the 2s, only Carney isn’t undersized. I’m not even sure Wafer or Almond are better than Ellington or Flynn would be at the 2.

Here's one big reason..
…why I hope they wait with free agents. Look at what could happen with Paul Milsap and the Jazz. If the Blazers make an offer to him, the Jazz will be insanely over the luxury mark. It would be in the Jazz’s best interest to look for a sign and trade in order to get something in return and get closer to the luxury mark. Hollinger just wrote a piece that suggested Korver for Outlaw and the rights to Kopponen. This would put the Jazz down to a manageable number (something like 2 mil over). Who will be in that position next year?

More speculation regarding the Jazz’s need to cut salary, from one of his chats:
Kris (Salt Lake City)
What are the odds the Jazz move AK? He seems like the type of player Don Nelson would hate…seems like a perfect player for Cohan to take on.

Forget it, you’re stuck with him unless you want to part with the New York pick AND take back another player somebody hates who makes in the $7-10 million range. Can’t see Jazz doing that.
I don’t think they’ve quite entered “top 5 picks for cash” territory, either, but one can fantasize.
Something *like* this
is our best option for adding another wing to get our roster balanced for the short-term.
There are no star 2s or 3s to be had this year, so teams gave that money to Arizas and Turkoglus instead. No way should a rebuilding team pay a premium, long-term deal to a wing who will be its 4th or 5th best player when it’s time to contend.
Better we take on a swingman who is more overpaid but with 2-3 years on his deal than a slightly less overpaid one over 5. Plenty of teams would pay us in draft picks and/or prospects in exchange for our doing so. This way we get the roster fix for now, but the contract has cleared by the time we’re extending Love, Rubio, etc. Compare that to signing Josh Childress at above market value, missing out on whatever assets we could bilk other teams out of, and possibly jeopardizing our ability to hang onto other players. No brainer.
I'd like either of the Atlanta Players
but the Wolves aren’t and probably shouldn’t spend the money this year.
Sorry--
“mini” in the sense of a “reduced” version.

Remember your failed joke about the Spanish newspaper article from the future?
I guess this is mine.
If we're going to start counting up all of my failed jokes
on this site, we’re going to need a longer web page.
